Oh no! I hope everything will be OK, and that you're not being forced to

If this is still available, I would pay for someone to pick this up, pack it,
and ship it to California. (I'd also send John money for it too, IMO it's only
fair if I'm paying someone to retrieve, pack, and ship it.)

If this is still available, I would **desperately** like to acquire all of the
above. Again, I'm willing to pay someone (and send money to John!) to pick this
up, pack it, and send it to me in California.

I have MacMinix 1.5, but a couple of my disks are bad, and I'd really like to
have the other Minix bits too. Literally simultaneously with John's sending of
this email, I was running the Mac IIfx in my office at Apple, and rebuilding
all of MacMinix 1.5.10.7 at -O2... Seriously! (Part of a personal project to
port Minix 1.5.10.7 to a 68010 VME board set.)

My first Open Source contribution was to MacMinix. I created a patch that
flushed the instruction and data cache on the 68040 when necessary (probably
too often, in fact) so it would run nice and fast on the Centris 610 that I
upgraded to from a Mac IIci in late 1993.

In any case, if I don't get these myself, I hope they went to good homes, and
I'd absolutely love it if whoever got them could make and share disk images of
the MacMinix disks since right now the only publicly-surviving artifact is the
StuffIt archive of an installed system.

FTGH - S100

This was a rescue (so its neither tested or power up) and some docs came with
it so I assume they belong to this machine (see pics).

http://koken.advancedimaging.com.au/index.php?/albums/s100-rescue-1/

The machine is located in Mortlake in the south west of Victoria (Australia)
and will need to be collected from there. Alternatively I will be in Melbourne
(Australia), more precisely Tullamarine, at various times during January 2020
and it could be collected from there.

Oh, memories. I do hope someone (who is not me) rescues this. A cluster of
three DECstation 5000s running Ultrix 4.2a was my first introduction to UNIX

43 is a rather unusual pin count. Multibus I used one 43x2

different (finer) pin pitch to connect to peripherals. But,
that extender would not fit a Multibus I card cage, the

I suppose there's a chance that it's for a piece of test equipment or
something more analog in nature, and not computer at all - all sorts of
equipment in the '60s had a card/backplane approach, and presumably field
engineers would have used riser boards along the lines of this one to
service them.

Then perhaps that's what they are. They looked like tapes when I
looked at the business edge of the cartridge, that's why I called them
tapes. But if they're actually disks

I'd have to check - they're in storage right now, where I was looking

These are digital electronic counters implemented with vacuum tubes.
EPUT = Event Per Unit Time, i.e. frequency.
Ten neon lamps for each digit of the readout.

If you want a manageable (and obtainable) example of tube-based digital

I think the VT240 is a base unit plus a VR201 monitor (same monitor that
is used by the DEC Rainbow and a few other DEC "PC" systems of that era).

The VT241 is the same base unit (with a different bezel) with a VR241
monitor.

I don't know what monitor is in that picture but I don't think that the
VR241 was ever used on the DECstation 5000 series.

That’s the famously heavy Trinitron-powered VRT19, the one that was on my
hallway floor when you came to visit in happier climes. it’s a workstation
monitor, RGB+sync-on-green and is for pretty much anything DEC with a 13W3
video connector. Not VT240/Rainbow. Remember me telling you about the static
shock trick you could pull on people? :)

Before getting rid of them all, maybe you (or someone on the list who
receives one) could consider taking some photos for the Terminals
Wiki. I don't believe it has an entry there yet:

If I get them, there will (eventually) be pictures, and maybe even a YouTube
video. The very limited information that seems to be available online makes
them even more interesting to me!

Hmm, I would probably need to rig a Unibus expansion chassis for my VAX-11/730,
since its card cage is full.

Cameron,
Please keep in mind that these things are rare as hens teeth, if not rarer.
This is only the second or third mention I’ve ever seen of them, and the first
I’ve seen of anyone having any. Please do not recycle them. If nothing else,
see if you can get them to one of the museums.

About the only thing I know of that’s rarer seems to be the DECnet kit for
RT-11!

Given that they come from 1984 or so, they should work with the
11/780, 11/785, 11/750, 11/730, 11/725, and probably later VAXen with
a Unibus. What's less clear to me is how long the drivers were
supported. IIRC, the docs on Bitsavers mention support for VMS 3.x.
I would rather expect support through VMS 4.X, but I wouldn't count on
an SMP-friendly driver for VMS 5.X and newer unless support was
specifically mentioned on the SPD. A lot of older stuff didn't get
brought forward with VMS 5.X drivers.

Onesy-twosy probably doable, but 10 of the 10.5" reels weighs in at
about 11 kg or 25 lbs. once boxed. So consider this when calculating

Re: FTGH: Pioneer DRM-602X 6-CD changer

2019-09-29 Thread jim stephens via cctalk

Pioneer's engineering for their digital products was in Torrance I
think.  We dealt with a rep and I ended up with one of their 3 x 6 pack
18 disc changer boxes.  But they would not part with anything at all
useful.  The only document I ever pried out of them was how to make my
fancy SCSI digital player play audio disks.  Which is mostly what I used
it for.

The 18 disk changer had all sorts of fancy commands, but only one
engineering release of drivers in the 98 (I think) days.  They had no
use for SCO Unix and considered any other such later systems as toys or
not worth their time.

Needless to say telling them and having their Rep who was a friend pound
on them about the attitude went nowhere as did the product.

The typical management most places other than Tandberg and to some
extent Teac was that such outcomes were due to lack of marketing
interest, despite a number of people saying they were interested if they
could get info and write drivers.

None of the information would have enabled any competitor to discern any
secrets, and would have helped were they all to standardize their tricks.

FWIW IIRC the drivers and software for windows that was release only
allowed you to automate playing songs from disks thru the audio out on
the deck.  They had the capability to rip or read and play thru windows
or stream (were someone to get to more than one cd) at the time, but the
powers that be didn't care.

I have 2 of the 6 channel internal ones, one of the single 6 pack units
and one of the 3 x 6 pack units.  I think NEC made the one which stores
the cds internally and spits them out.  Pioneer had the 6 pack gizmo.

thanks
Jim

Would really like all to go to someone in the CC community who can take all and
sort/distribute themselves rather than cherry pick but that may be optimistic...

Yeah we have a new place but less storage room at least for a couple of years
I also thought I would be playing around with my old computer stuff when I
retired, but I really dont see that happening (retiring soon or playing with
old electronics for fun when I do) also significant pressure from SO to

"get rid of that junk"

So far noone that matters has said anything that dumb to me. Why would
I save things at significant expense and continue to collect them for 20
to 40 years then "get rid of that junk".

I am lucky not o have such a person in a significant place.

I'm glad you are good with yours, but I'd not be there. It does mean I
don't have an Architecture Digest presentable house as well. And am
starting to "play with it".

Thanks for sharing it with the list too. I'm in southern CA and not
able to help with your offload. My own pile is as big as yours and is
hard to deal with.

thanks

I stopped by and picked up some stuff from Peter today. There’s a lot of stuff
but I was only prepared to take a few items (I ended up taking a couple of tek
‘scopes too).

I didn’t have time to sort through everything that was available but there’s a
lot!

He did mention that he has to be out of his space by May 31st and anything that
isn’t
picked up will be scrapped. I did take some pictures that I’ll put up sometime
tomorrow but what Pete has on his list below seems pretty accurate.

Pete is located in Richmond CA. I can forward his contact information to anyone
that is interested in acquiring some/all of the remaining stuff.

Hi Rob,

I’ve been told about reship.com who I guess are like a US equivalent of
parcel2go over here. You pay domestic US shipping to them and they add a
surcharge to forward it over to you, presumably by boat. What I don’t know is
how that affects import duty etc but it might be worth looking into.

Interesting. I just checked the site. It looks to be mostly about giving you a
US mailing address, but then it just ships to you using a normal carrier such
as USPS, UPS, Fedex etc., so it doesn't seem likely that it would be a cheaper
way, or am I missing something?

I think its more about being able to ship things were the vendor doesn't ship
to the UK, or where you want to consolidate multiple shipments.

Here's my experience with US re-shipping agents. Their charges vary in skewed
ways not
always easy to guage. With the one I decided to use, I've had a 1 ounce packet
of LEGO
bricks reposted at an outrageous cost of $40+ USD to Australia. On the other
hand, they
shipped my mainframe console from NJ to Oz at an entirely reasonable rate, and
looked
after it pretty well. If you have to use them make sure the seller attaches
copies of the
invoice or eBay sale page etc. to the inside and outside and also posts a
signed or
initialled one to you seperately as it really helps with customs.

In summary they are a lifesaver if the seller has pulled up the drawbridge (as
some of
them have) to get an item shipped internationally. There are a lot of them to
choose from
and to be honest I just went with the one that looked to have the friendliest
website and
offered some extra services (repack item, photos of received item, amalgamation
of
shipments etc.) but you could certainly do some comparisons on their re-postage
rates.

Steve.

This is the reason I mentioned parcel2go - they send thousands of parcels daily
so can negotiate a cheaper rate for shipping with the same companies thee and
me use. I assume ReShip do the same thing.

I assume someone will have grabbed the 'Bolics machine... Hyper-desirable.

I do hope someone will be able to scoop up all this stuff. Even if all

Regarding the thread started by Peter Wallace of Mesa Electronics the
other month - I've been by for one load, and there are still tons of DEC
and HP, and a few RS6k, workstations/servers. Including a rare DECserver
that has a TurboChannel Expansion box. Lots of HP 712 and 715
workstations, a C110, DECstations (MIPS) and VAXstations (derp).

Please note that the vintage calculators shown are spoken for. Sorry.

Mesa has to vacate these offices by the end of the month. They're super
nice people, just trying to avoid anything involving a scrapper. Please
dig up that thread and have another look (sorry, traveling).
