Do you by chance have an IDE device on the same cable as the burner? If
so, and it's a CD, you *may* be able to work it by something like
"hdc=ide-cd hdd=ide-scsi" or some such. Or just buy a cheap IDE card and

As you keep on propagating this nonsense (one might also call it FUD),
for the record: DVD+ isn't any less standard than DVD-. Anyone can call
themselves the "standard". Despite the FUD the DVD- people are putting
out about DVD+, DVD+ isn't going to go away because it has a few things
to offer DVD- couldn't possibly dream of (hence the need to resort to
dirty tricks). As I can make out DVD+ is gaining momentum, and
personally I wouldn't dream of buying a single-format burner - I
imagine most people might think the same and the days of single-format
burners are numbered. Any decent player has no problems with either
DVD- or DVD+ as long as the media quality isn't rock-bottom.
Let's be serious here, you may have "any decent player" available, but
if I'm writing a DVD with greatest chance of being playable on DVD-ROM
system of unknown origin, I use DVD-R. Joerg seems to be right, it works
in more places.

You guys can argue all day about which is standard, many of us care more
about what is most likely to work in a system other than our own.
Doesn't appear to be FUD, appears to be good advice. Note he said "If
you like to buy a single format writer," not "avoid DVD+R." Sounds like
good advice to me, although I certainly will be getting +/- for futire
use, now that the price is down.

Sounds promising.

Now: More insights:

The problems with DVD-R vanished (except Princo), and I was able to
reproduce how they emerged: In my experiments I always first tried
cdrecord-proDVD, then dvdrecord, then growisofs.
While proDVD does not work but also does not seem to harm status,
dvdrecord left the system (drive? bus?) in an invalid state.
mediainfo (as well as proDVD-atip) showed values other than for
a blank disk, and growisofs failed with the message I posted earlier.
mediainfo see below.
Just ejecting and reloading disc leads to a status reset, and the
medium again is recognized as blank and can be recorded with growisofs.

So, now with growisofs (and only with this) I can record + and - as
it seems. You might suppose I'm a happy guy now? Guess what happened
next: with a new DVD+R brand (Imation), the disc recorded at 4x with
growisofs until 100%, and then failed on closing session. Details
see below. Yeah. Any chance for recovery this time?

Fun, suspense, adventure, and something to play with -> DVD recording
in general and especially with Linux (you dont happen to know the
German Ueberraschungsei advertisement..)

Thinking positive, its a progress. Thanks for growisofs, the
Plex708 would seem to be worthless for Linux without it at
the moment.

readcd pretty much supports the same device specification as cdrecord,
which means IDE drives can be accessed with dev=ATAPI:x,y,z. Run
cdrecord dev=ATAPI: -scanbus. Unfortunately using ATAPI: changes the
designation of the SCSI devices, so you have to memorise 2 sets of
numbers (IMO device names could be seriously improved).

Make sure you've got VIA chipset support enabled in your kernel, and
perhaps enable PCI Quirks as well. See
Documentation/sound/VIA-chipset about that.

Hmm, and neither does readcd on inspection. Sorry about that, it
works for me because I only use my reader to rip audio CDs with
cdparanoia, and my burner to burn ISOs from the net, and backups.
If I want to read an image off a CD, I just use the burner. But
ofcourse that's no good for on-the-fly copying.

Anyway, I'd go with the kernel configuration first. If that doesn't
work, I suggest asking for help on lkml, this sounds like a
kernel/hardware problem rather than a problem with readcd.

now I can mount & acccess this /dev/sg1 device ok but readcd does

a music disk instead of a data disk (see below)

any hints?

Random thoughts:

- Try getting the latest version of cdrtools, and compile and
install them from source

I'll try what you suggest

- From your lsmod output, ide-scsi isn't loaded?

that's right. it's a copy/paste typo

- The error message "Warning: controller returns wrong size for CD
capabilities page." could be due to a firmware bug

- The output from readcd you pasted seems to be fine. Does it read
it correctly?

no, the PC freezes after a few minutes and the output can't be read with
-o loop

- xcdroast doesn't seem to detect anything, it just starts cdda2wav.
Although it seems that you snipped some output. Could you try
without XCDRoast? That would give some more legible output as well
as remove a potential source of error

- "DGB10: readtoc: no MMC" seems to say that the drive is not MMC
compliant. If this is an old Goldstar drive, you may need the
gscd.o kernel module.

- How is the drive attached to the system? What kind of mainboard do
you have?

you're right, it's an old IDE ATAPI Goldstar drive attached on the mother
board ctler (secondary slave)
I also have a Traxdata CD writer attached to SCSI (only device in the chain).
My MB is a DFI K6BV3+, VIA MVP3 chipset + with K6-2/500

- Does it work without ide-scsi, ie with ide-cd? If so, you could
add the line

yes, it used to work that way before I swithed to ide-scsi.o.  I'll try the
gscd.o driver

options ide-cd ignore=hdx

with hdx the device of your writer, to use the reader with ide-cd
and the writer with ide-scsi. This is not a solution, but may be a
workaround.

I can't. xcdroast doesn't recognize non-SCSI devices, that's why I've switched
to SCSI

The Sony is supported by cdrecord modulo Firmware bugs...

If you like to buy a single format writer, buy DVD-, it is standard has less
readibility problems and the drives follow the SCSI command set standards.

Start with cdrecord-ProDVD -atip on that media. Maybe it is a cheap
and bad media.

Also make sure that you get enough speed (DMA must be enabled).
It may be a wrong message from the drive

Well what you like to have is an inofficial "feature" only found in
Ricoh drives. If you like to have best compatibility, just use the standard DVD-
media.
