DVD writing, alpha architecture, recommendations wanted
Dear masters of DVD writing! We are planning to switch from tape backups to DVD backups in our institute at the university. Our backup server is a alpha SX164, with a Promise PDC20267 UDMA100 IDE controller, running debian/woody. I have the following questions: - Is writing of DVDs supported on alpha architecture, and if yes, is it still `buggy' or ok? For cdrecord-prodvd I do not see alpha/linux architecture. For dvd+rw-tools I have built my own backport from the debian/sid package, but got the following errors compiling: growisofs.c: In function `setup_fds': growisofs.c:503: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size growisofs.c:508: warning: cast to pointer from integer of different size growisofs.c:517: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size growisofs.c: In function `main': growisofs.c:1778: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size growisofs.c:1778: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size - Can I put the DVD writer on the Promise controller? I know that there are some controllers which do not accept CDROM drives (my HPT eg). - Finally, which DVD writer could you recommend? Our main/only usage will be for backing up snapshots of the filesystem. From the following list, which do you think is most suitable: Plextor PX708A LG M4040B-R LG M4081B-B Benq DW400A Benq DW800A Asus DRW-0402P/D Sony DRU-530A Philips DVD 824 Philips DVD 208K Pioneer DVR-107D MSI DR8-A NEC ND-2500 Personally I have very good experiences with Plextor drives, so I tend to them, but alas, they are expensive, and our university is very picky with money. (really last one for now) - Do you know a `good' backup program for DVD? Thanks a lot for any suggestion/help/warning! Multi Volume CD/DVDs
Pardon my ignorance, but I would like to ask what is the commonly practiced method of creating multi-volume disks. That is, for instance I need to burn a directory that has files whose combined size is, say 12 GB. How would one go about creating multiple ISO9660 images from it and then burning them on CD/DVDs. Is there a way that these images can themselves keep track of information like their position in the sequence, total number of images that constitute the complete dataset etc. Also, what if the things are complicated by the existence of one or more files of size 2GB. Is this a Linux only issue? Is this an issue on 64 bit SGI IRIX systems? I did read mkisofs man page but could not understand how exactly to get this done. Please advise. I shall really appreciate any response. Thanks in advance for your time and help. Ashish -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Re: Re: cdrecord-ProDVD and Liteon DVDRW LDW-451S?
Hello, sorry for the missing description and the HTML mail (Lotus Notes ;-) ). I had: $ ./cdrecord-wrapper.sh dev=0,0,0 -driveropts=help -checkdrive Cdrecord-ProDVD-Clone 2.01a27 ??? (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003 Jörg Schilling : : Device type: Removable CD-ROM And then, in the features list, any DVD burning capabilities were missing. When I started burning, cdrecord said, that the device was not ready, if I remember right. Meanwhile, I have flashed the drive to firmware HSOP (unfortunately only a Windows flash software is available from LiteOn). With the cdrecord-ProDVD 2.01a27, the Device type: Removable CD-ROM info is still the same, but burning works fine nevertheless! By the way, Mr Schilling, thanks very much for this excellent software!
