Unable to burn at 4x using cdrecord and dvd+rw-tools

2004-03-03 Thread Kronos
Hi,
I have a small problem with my dvd recorder. It's a NEC ND-1300A (dual
format). It writes DVD+/-R at 4x, DVD-RW at 2x and DVD+RW at 2.4x.
cdrecord (either from cdrtools or ProDVD) reports that the drive can
write at most at 2x:

It refuse to work at 4x (with 4x media of course) even using -force.
dvd+rw-tools shows the same behaviour. I also tried cdrecord + Warly's

The media is indeed 4x capable and it seems that the drive knows this.

OS is linux 2.6.3, with glibc 2.3.2. I tried both dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 and
dev=/dev/hdc. Oh, the drive does work at 4x under Windows.

Any clue of what's going on?

TIA,
Luca

It just said that current write speed was 2x1385KBps (or maybe 2.4,

No, DMA was on and I was burning big tar.bz2 files (about 1GB each). DVD
drive and HD are on different channel and the partition is not
frammented. Catting files to /dev/null show a tput of about 50MBps.

That may be the case. I was using Verbatim media, I bought them because
they are supported by NEC [1]. Now I'm burning at 4x using Magnex DVD-R
media with growisofs without problems. cdrecord still refuse to work at
4x though. Guess that I'll stick to growisofs ;)

[ISOFS] Troubles with multi session DVDs.

2004-06-23 Thread Kronos
Hi,
I'm having a strange (at least for me) problem burning multisession
DVD+R media: the dvd becomes unreadable after the 3rd session is burned.
mount refuses to do its work, and kernel says:

Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

Note that there isn't any read error, so the kernel is simply unable to
locate the primary volume descriptor.

That happened with 3 different disks (and different data, though
sessions size were similar). DVD were burned with growisofs (5.19.4.9.7)
using the following command:

growisofs -M /dev/hdc -J -r (-Z for the first session)

mkisofs version is 2.01a29.

I don't think that the problem is related to the inode wrap after 4GB
because:
* The 1st and 2nd sessions took about 2.6GB, the last was 1.8GB so
directories should be before the 4GB boundary.
* I tried the patch from Paul Serice without success.

This is the output of dvd+rw-mediainfo:

Note that I get similar warnings for the other DVDs.

Kernel is 2.6.6 (and 2.6.7 for the last dvd), DMA is on for both the HD
and the DVD recorder. Also I don't have any problem filling the DVD in
one session.

The "other" OS is able to read the disk, so this may be a problem in the
isofs code (that's why I put lkml on CC).

Any idea of what's going on?

thanks,
Luca

Yes, I can confirm that with ide-scsi I can read the dvd without
problems.

Jens are you aware of this bug in ide-cd?
