Alan 020-8293 5015 a...@crimsonuk.com mailto:a...@crimsonuk.com Hi there, I'm writing from Advance Production News magazine. I saw your company profile in the Knowledge and realised I have not spoken to you but we might be of interest to you. In a nutshell, we list every single production leaving development and entering preproduction, week by week in the UK. We also list overseas productions coming to shoot here and all the new production companies - not student films. We basically list fifty new productions each week and don't repeat information. We are in our eleventh year with a 91% resubscription rate. Would you be interested in seeing some more information and sample pages? APN is monthly or weekly online and lists every single UK feature film and television programme entering preproduction. We list 170 - 200 each month including overseas coming to shoot here and all the new production companies. We do not repeat information so each month it's 170 - 200 new programme leads. All in one easy to use monthly magazine or weekly online. We are £350 per year for online and are in our tenth year of business. We are subscribed to by everyone from ITN, BBC, Syco, Universal, right down to set designers, camera and sound people, edit facilities, directors and casting companies etc. More information at www.crimsonuk.com http://www.crimsonuk.com/ or to subscribe click www.crimsonuk.com/join http://www.crimsonuk.com/join If you have any questions, just email them over or give me a call on 020-8293 5015 Best wishes Alan phone/fax 020-8293 5015 Alan Williams Crimson Communications 54 Dartmouth Court London SE10 8AT www.crimsonuk.com http://www.crimsonuk.com/ To be removed from this list, please return the email to me with the word remove in the subject bar to a...@crimsonuk.com mailto:a...@crimsonuk.com . So if you can't know the exact size of the image before you start, you can't burn from a pipe. Actually, I don't think you can burn at all with dynamic data, there are old posts here indicating that even using the builtin mkisofs, if the files are growing there can be problems. The final size can be on the command line or in the ISO image, but must be known at the start of the burn. See the man page isosize and tsize= descriptions. The latter explains that cdrecord uses modes which require the information early. It seems that you are uninformed - sorry but growisofs uses mkisofs! Mkisofs is definitely not designed to work on a dataset that changes while mkisofs is running. Whether you _believe_ that you have been able to write something useful with growisofs, while the dataset mkisofs is working on changes, is irrelevent. In most cases, the resulting DVD will be just unusable or mkisofs will even _abort_ because a file did change it's size between the creation of the metadata part of it's output and the time when reading of the related file. CONCLUSION: growisofs _may_ in some rare cases be able to create you a usable DVD, but this is nothing you may rely on. Growisofs cannot give you more than cdrecord gives you with pipes. BTW: because it is a well known problem to make backups from life filessystems, modern Operating Systems did develop filesystem snapshots. If you use snapshots, there are no problems with _both_ growisofs _and_ cdrecord and this is the only _reliable_ way to use pipes with mkisofs on life filesystems. If you do not run a modern OS and thus lack snapshots, I recommend you to upgrade to a modern OS that supports snapshots. Both Solaris and FreeBSD support filesystem shapshots since ~ Y2000. The only other reliable way to do streaming backups from filesystems is to use the method from the time _before_ filesystem snapshots have been introduced: - Bring you computer down to single user mode - Make the backup from a now stable filesystem - Bring the system back to multi-user mode If you are on an older OS and cannot upgrade to a recent OS, this is the only way you may do backups. You ignore the first case, I assume you agree it is correct. You ignore the 2nd case, I assume you agree it is also correct. And the 3rd case is one which is readily used, so claiming it's not true is futile. Consider: find /var/spool/ordersys/closed -type f -mnewer /usr/ordersys/lastbkup | cpio -o -Hcrc | gzip -8 | growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/proc/self/fd/0 How do I use cdrecord in this situation? The size of the data is not known, and each run may or may not include the same files. Obviously the size of the individual files doesn't change, each run is static, but run to run isn't. So if you can't know the exact size of the image before you start, you can't burn from a pipe. Actually, I don't think you can burn at all with dynamic data, there are old posts here indicating that even using the builtin mkisofs, if the files are growing there can be problems. The latter explains that cdrecord uses modes which require the information early. It seems that you are uninformed - sorry but growisofs uses mkisofs! No, it does not use mkisofs when reading from a pipe. It write the incoming data to the media directly, and it need not be an ISO image at all. Mkisofs is definitely not designed to work on a dataset that changes while mkisofs is running. Other than my mention that I expected problems, mkisofs is not mentioned. The issue is that cdrecord with not read pipes and burn media unless the size of the data is known in advance. This is the only issue related to the three limitations I noted above. Repeat after me, ISO images created by mkisofs are not the only data you can burn to a DVD. CONCLUSION: growisofs _may_ in some rare cases be able to create you a usable DVD, but this is nothing you may rely on. Growisofs cannot give you more than cdrecord gives you with pipes. Irrelevant. As long as a consistent dataset is written to the pipe with every run, filesystem snapshots are irrelevant. Most database applications can write a consistent dataset, not limited to just database programs like Oracle, mysql, etc. If you do not run a modern OS and thus lack snapshots, I recommend you to upgrade to a modern OS that supports snapshots. Both Solaris and FreeBSD support filesystem shapshots since ~ Y2000. See above, o/s level snapshots are not needed for database, and may actually freeze the data in the database in an inconsistent state. Actually, as long as the backup dataset is consistent, I don't see that the method of ensuring consistency is relevant. Some are more convenient that other, I freely agree! Jörg -- E. A better solution is not touching sr_mod and call cdrecord with dev=/dev/scd0 or similar, instead of dev=1,0,0. Cheers, Chris. -- (aidworld) chris wilson | chief engineer ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) The same problem with a LG burner in a USB housing (computer USB 1.0) You could solve the problem with cdrecord unloading the module sr_mod, but you could not use k3b and probably other GUIs neither. A better solution is not touching sr_mod and call cdrecord with dev=/dev/scd0 or similar, instead of dev=1,0,0. In k3b you can go to Options user parameters and set dev=/dev/scd0 (or dev=/dev/scd1 as your burner be) as an option to cdrecord. I don't know about other GUIs. Sorry if this were answered elsewhere. I am not suscribed to the list, so, please CC any answer to me. Ignacio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If /usr/local/src/. is a shorthand for /usr/local/src=/usr/local/src with graft points, why would it be any easier to figure out just because it was a hell of a lot easier to use for multiple directories? Joerg, would you accept a patch such that /var/www/1= with no trailing copy of the same string would be a shorthand for this behaviour? I am not sure if this would really make sense as you could easily write var.www.1=/var/www/1 instead of var.www.1= in special when you run scripts. The idea is not to solve the original poster's problem, but to avoid /var/www/1=/var/www/1 many times repeated when what is really wanted is to say /usr/local/src (or similar) and not have to use graft-points and say /usr/local/src=/usr/local/src. To say that the current behaviour is inconvenient when saving a large number of directories *in the original location*, since graft-points are needed. Also please note that I did not yet start with a new development cycle for cdrtools as I am currently working on Star's incremental restores. Hey guys, That's an interesting problem and I had that when I wanted to create differential backups on suse9.1. All software used was self compiled and not the one provided by suse. In Suse9.0 I could work it perfectly and there was absolutely no problem but with Suse9.1 and now Suse9.2 I don't get it to run. That said, I tried to figure out what has changed between those releases and I have a guess that it might be related to the reiser filesystem. That of course does not explain why paolo has the same problem but maybe he uses also the reiserfs... Paolo, if you get rid of the '-quiet' and add a '-v' into your growisofs command then you will see exactly in which file the program hangs. I already did several tests and it stops on my system always somewhere else and that's why I think it might be the filesystem. It works for me perfectly with the same data when used on an older reiserfs release. What do you guys think, silly assumption or is there something on it? cheers, pascal ### Now I try to burn a subsequent session in incremental mode: #growisofs -M /dev/hdd -root backup-2004-10-22-10:43 -old-root backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D -exclude-list /tmp/backup.exclude -graft-points home/nason=home/nason output: Executing 'mkisofs -C 16,407824 -M /dev/fd/3 -root backup-2004-10-22-10:43 -old-root backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D -exclude-list /tmp/backup.exclude -graft-points home/nason=home/nason | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdd obs=32k seek=25489' Rock Ridge signatures found At this point the dvd burner lights up for a while then stops. Nothing happens. Using top I can see that mkisofs is using all the cpu available. I have to kill the process. If I do the same with a small test directory, the same procedure works. With my home directory (800Mb) it hangs. I compiled mkisofs with a debug option, and ran under the debugger the command (is this right? I took it from the growisofs output, substituting /dev/fd/3 with /dev/hdd ): #mkisofs -C 16,407824 -M /dev/hdd -root backup-2004-10-22-10:43 -old-root backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D -exclude-list /tmp/backup.exclude -graft-points home/nason=home/nason The program runs an infinite loop in multi.c:545, while (len = 4) { It's pure mkisofs problem. In other words it has anything to do whether or not you use ide-scsi, what is your kernel version nor which brand is your recorder unit. It has everything to do with your home directory structure.. You can try narrow the problem by temporarily moving subdirectories out of your home directory to identify which one causes trouble, then step down that directory and apply same procedure (temporarily move out subdirs elsewhere on same device)... From: Thomas J Magliery PhD [EMAIL PROTECTED] I guess the answer is: use growisofs with this unit, or get Plextor to do something about this firmware. I'm not at all opposed to growisofs/k3b, I was just used to xcdroast for burning CDs. Have you dealt with anyone at Plextor that I might try to explain this to? Incidentally, Alan Stern at linux-usb-devel is also looking this over from the usb-storage end, and I'll post something here if he has something to add. The answer is: send a bug report to the Linux people - I allready did send bug report to Plextor. Wait for whatever fix is available first. From: Andy Polyakov [EMAIL PROTECTED] -a broken drive. Again, since growisofs works, I doubt this, but perhaps cdrecord avails itself of some facility that growisofs ignores. Is this the case? In other words, WHY would growisofs either not have or not be stopped by this error, while cdrecord is? Recall that cdrecord is fine with blank CD-Rs using the same drive. A possible reason may be a bug in growisofs If growisofs didn't pay attention to the error code returned by the command in question, I can assure that the recording would have failed to start in some other way (or do I again know too little to assure that?) The reason why growisofs doesn't get stuck on this is because it doesn't try to squeeze the unit for every bit of information (most likely partially bogus in this particular case), but asks only for information relevant for the intended purpose. As I can assure that this is actually intentional behaviour, it can't be classified as a bug. Yes, it hides/avoids bugs in unit firmware and possibly Linux USB transport, but it's not a coincidence or lucky guess, but a result of consideration which so to say paid off. A. Cdrecord does not squeeze the driveit just does what the SCSI standard documents: Ask the drive how many bytes it is willing to provide and later retrieve them. You did not answer if growisofs always checks the SCSI Status byte.
