What they should do is make it very clear at install, that this version is not the original version. And I did already mention several times that the cdrecord variant with the DVD hack does no longer work properly for writing CDs. So if e.g. k3b always use the hacked version, there will be hard to catch bugs that would never ocur with the real cdrecord. Jörg I did not know that this list was reserved to the ProDVD version. How do you justify this ? This has nothing to do with cdrecord-ProDVD but with the fact that the makers of the bastardized patches do not even care if the patch works at all :-( Please do read what I wrote too. Fist of all, I have put on my very first message that the observations/problems I had DID concern SEVERAL authors: - k3b team - growisfs authors - dvd+rw-tools authors - cdrecord + dvd patches So don't ask me why I titled my post speed problems because obviously it may concern growisofs too. It was a GENERAL report of problems with the new PX716A, and I thought it may be interesting for coders related to DVD writing to hear about a new device. And I am not really interested in the war you may have with people who decided to fork cdrecord and apply new DVD patches. I am just here to report what I see, as far as my technical level allows me to do. If it may be of any help, I would be glad. Now for the specific point about the driver options: I was suprised that with a media in the drive, options like powerec (btw, it is not PowerRec but PoweRec as stated in the man page) or gigarec were not listed anymore. So are you going to give an answer, or do you prefer to leave me in the RTFM world, which I did first, of course, and where I did not find any answer ? Thanks. Zeb [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: BTW, PX-712 and 716 are wonderful drives. They offer the possibility to detect C1/C2 errors for CD-Rs, and PIO/PI/TA for DVDs to check burning quality. Reverse engineering would be very useful because it seems Plextor does not give any technical information about this. Alexander Noe has begun some work, using Bushound, to detect the commands, but he only writes Windows software, as far as I know (pxview/pxscan). You may contact him if you want to bring better support for these drives, he is very keen to share data. He sent me some code he uses for pxscan, I will ask him if I can spread it. All known, but there is OpenSolaris that takes useful time and there are people like you and the Linux kernel maintainers who steal my time. Wouldn't it be much more polite to just tell us what you like instead of starting a useless thread on an unmaintained patch on cdrrecord? I am in contact with Alexander and I already have code and I already did integrate GigaRec into cdrecord. Support for other Plextor specific features in in the queue for a long time and will definitely appear soon. If people would _help_ with my projects instead of starting flame wars, things could look different. But unfortunately today, people just sit and wait for new OS software to arrive for them instead of understaning the Open Source model and helping with what they can do. There is a lot of work to do and people (even those who are unable to program) could help alot if they just like. Joerg Schilling wrote: Wouldn't it be much more polite to just tell us what you like instead of starting a useless thread on an unmaintained patch on cdrrecord? Listen Jorg. I am not responsible if you had a bad day. So stop being rude. And don't make such assumptions, about the features I would like to see in cdrecord. That was not my point and you know it. I was just reporting general issues that I could have with my new drive. Here you try to put some fault on me. Useless ? Maybe not for everybody. The K3b team found it useful, on the contrary. I am in contact with Alexander and I already have code and I already did integrate GigaRec into cdrecord. Understand that people are reluctant of supporting a proprietary, closed-source product. You made an excellent work with cdrecord, but I don't fancy taking time for helping a closed-source product, when at the same time other people, like Warly, write GPL code for this task. Sorry but this is a loss of time and efforts. You complain you don't have time because of OpenSolaris, but on the other hand you don't accpet other people, like warly, would help. This is crazy. So once again, READ posts before being rude, insulting people, and accuse them of not reading man pages when it is not the case. There is a lot of work to do and people (even those who are unable to program) could help alot if they just like. It is what I tried to do. The answer I got was don't expect to get help here. I was told I was not using cdrecord-prodvd, whereas I reported several times the output of it. I don't know if a lot of people would have my patience to explain and explain again their problem. Speed problems with PX-716A
Hi, This is a bug report I sent first to k3b team (KD bugzilla #97992). However, this may concern growisofs/cdrtools/kernel, so I send a copy of it here. Sorry if I report too many things, but this may interest growisofs authors, at least for the speed command part (I guess). I have got a PX-716A DVD burner, latest firmware (1.04) and latest version of cdrtools, growisofs, k3b: Cdrecord-Clone 2.01.01a01-dvd growisofs by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 5.21, front-ending to mkisofs: mkisofs 2.01 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Qt: 3.3.3 KDE: 3.3.2 K3b: 0.11.19 There are some issues with the different software, probably I shall have to post this bug report on a lot of mailing list because they may lie in the different software. 1) K3b setup reports the PX-716A as non-capable of DVD+R(W) burning. However, this is false, and k3b is able to do it. K3B bug ? 2) When trying to burn a DVD+R(W), I have to force the media to be used, despite it is correctly detected (DVD+R (empty) is displayed on window). K3B bug ? 3) Possible speeds are correctly detected. However, using Verbatim DVD+R 8X certified (MMC 003), despite I select 4X, 6X or 8X, it tries to burn at 12X. I have to select either 1X before speed detection (-speed 1 is sent by growisofs). the growisofs command has the correct -speed=8 (or else) switch but tries to burn at 12X. Workaround : select 1X then -speed=1 will make it burn at 4X, or ignore, then it will correctly burn the media at 8X, the certified speed for that media. Growisofs bug ? 4) Only root can burn a second or subsequent DVD. This is a kernel bug, which has been solved. See http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernelm=110599420505734w=2 5) Issue with driveropts detection of this drive: as root, with empty tray, 'cdrecord driveropts=help -checkdrive dev=ATA:1,0,0' reports: Device type: Removable CD-ROM Version: 0 Response Format: 1 Vendor_info: 'PLEXTOR ' Identifikation : 'DVDR PX-716A ' Revision : '1.04' Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW. Maybe a cdrtools/cdrecord problem ? I hope this helps. Thanks Eric -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
