Re: What does this error mean ?

2008-12-24 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

 Track 01: 4227 of 4227 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 100%] 4.3x.
 ...
 CDB: 35 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
 ...
Sense Key: 0x3 Medium Error, deferred error, Segment 0
Sense Code: 0x73 Qual 0x04 (program memory area update failure) Fru 0x0

Affected is some kind of DVD, i assume.

Failed command is SYNCHRONIZE CACHE, which is
supposed to be issued at the very end of a
burn. It tells the drive that the logical track
is finished.

The error would rather belong to CD media.
MMC-5, 4.2.3.10.1
The Program Memory Area is present only for
CD-R and CD-RW media for the purpose of
accounting for the usage of user data areas
 on the medium. [...]
Update the PMA means to update the PMA on the
disc or to update the PMA Cache that shall be
written to the PMA on the disc prior to the
removing the disc from the Drive.
It is likely that the firmware programmers
of your drive re-use that CD error code for
some DVD mishap.

So the problem is obviously between drive and
media and not between burn program and drive.
That means the classic remedy applies:
Try what happens if you use different media or
a different drive.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

It's worked very well with the same media for lots of burning, and

From the size info I can guess that this may be a DVD but a

The cdrecord web site mentions what you need to send

cdrecord -atip or better: cdrecord -v -minfo

and the cdrecord -v output from writing the medium.

Here we have a point, in order to have an even better cdrecord, that could be
printed when an error is encountered, just for stupid people like me which
don't think enough before reporting an incident :-)

cdrecord -atip or better: cdrecord -v -minfo

and the cdrecord -v output from writing the medium.

That one is a little hard to do after the writing... I posted the end of it.

Thank you really much for cdrecord (and all which depends on it), maybe my burn
script is somehow false and a more skilled could look at it, specialy for the
more of 4Gb part ?

You still did not send the ADIP info but the media has been written
to, but it may be that only a writer will read it as it was not closed
(fixated).

The latter seems to be a problem of your drive

Cdrecord did what is documented to write DVD-Rs and this did not change since
cdrecord introduced DVD-R support in March 1998 nearly 11 years ago.
