I *think* that sar (System Activity Reporting?) package is still
available? Haven't looked/used for a long time. If so, you should be
able to get what you want, and a lot more, by installing and activating
it.

*If* you can get into BIOS, disable IDE 2 and see if that doesn't stop
the "hang" (I suspect it is not hung, but just timing out waiting for
some device to respond - can take a *long* time).

Also, *if* you have a choice, put the CD on the 2nd IDE port (after re-
enabling it if you disabled it) to reduce contention when using both the
CD and HD at the same time. Since you have a P III and I have a P II
board (and older) in some of my machines that will boot from CD on
secondary IDE ports, maybe yours would allow this too? Might take care
of some issues.

The suggestion to try resetting the BIOS is a good one. Also, maybe time
to replace the CMOS battery on a mainboard that old? Might get rid of
the flakiness in your BIOS?

That kmod is in extras repo:

nmon is packaged as part of RPMforge :)

[CentOS] Install on a usb flash drive

2007-08-18 Thread Jerry Geis

I all,
I was thinking about installing centos on a usb flash drive. Perhaps a 4GIG.
I dont need X or anything on this drive so installing should fit just fine.

Are there boot issues with these flash drives? I'll be using a newer
motherboard

so the motherboard should be able to boot USB.

Does this work? Have others done anything with flash drives? I am
wanting this

flash drive to be the ONLY drive in the computer.
Kind of a dedicated machine running multiple RS232 multiport cards.

Thanks,

Jerry

I believe that recent kernels have a patch applied that show io counters
per process. I haven't looked into it yet though.

This is one of the most important items on my wishlist for dstat, a topio
plugin next to the existing topcpu and topmem plugins.

Kind regards,

Re: [CentOS] Install on a usb flash drive

2007-08-18 Thread gjgowey
It'll only be a problem if you're planning to use a swap file or do frequent
writes (compiling programs, etc). Solid state devices really aren't great if
your going to do heavy writing because they will fry eventually. Under normal
usage this could be years, but with heavy daily use it could be months.

An interesting idea. How would the install work? If you boot from
DVD with the USB drive installed, will it see the drive and make it an
option for the install destination?

Thanks,
Scott
