No, the syncing could take a couple of hours, depending upon the
sizes of your arrays. This takes place during the installation.

If the syncing hasn't finished before the installation has finished,
it will have to continue after the reboot.

I don't know if it is smart enough to continue where it stopped, or
it has to start all over?

totem uses gnome-vfs, and xmms does not. If you were to somehow switch
your network-connected files to start xmms then you wouldn't be able to
open them. Either mount the network drives locally or find another audio
player that does use gnome-vfs, such as rhythmbox.

Re: [CentOS] OT: Suggestions for RAID HW for 2 SATA drives in DellPowerEdge SC

2007-08-30 Thread Feizhou

About 10 seconds after I started this thread, I remembered a long discussion
about
RAID, SATA, etc., 2 or 3 months ago. I think that Feizhou (?) strongly
recommended
going with Software RAID in CentOS. I will search for that and do a lot of
reading. RAID 1 for mirroring is what I want. Lanny

Whoa there!

Hardware raid + battery backed up memory cache in raid 1,10 mode is hard
to beat with software raid and hardware raid offers data integrity
guarantee beyond software raid.

If you were planning a huge array especially a raid5 array, then
software raid may be better. Hardware RAID cards all come with memory
caches now so their throughput is no longer limited.

Another route you can go is getting a PCI/PCIe/PCI-X BBU RAM/NVRAM card
to put an external journal on to speed up fsync performance for
filesystems like ext3 over software raid since these cards can go beyond
1GB of memory unlike hardware raid cards that usually max out at 256MB.

Software RAID is also good if you need to be able to transfer the disks
to another box that does not have a hardware raid controller or the same
controller.

Weigh these in your decision. :-)

Hi - I had some funny problems with an SATA drive. I found the problem
to be that the power connector was a little loose. I would check that

From the RHEL4 docs (also applicable to C5):
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/ref-guide/s1-networkscripts-interfaces.html

HWADDR=, where is the hardware address of the
Ethernet device in the form AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF. This directive is useful
for machines with multiple NICs to ensure that the interfaces are
assigned the correct device names regardless of the configured load
order for each NIC's module. This directive should /not/ be used in
conjunction with MACADDR.

You can get the mac address from running ifconfig. The HWADDR setting
goes in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (and ifcfg-eth1)
files. (the setting either doesn't exist, or may be transposed and
causing your problems)

This is a known problem with the forcedeth driver and some of the newer
ethernet controllers it is used on. There is supposed to be a patch coming in
the latest 2.6 kernel, but who knows how long it might take to be backported
by upstream. Does your board manufacturer supply a linux driver?

When I do this with RHEL5 Disk 1, the drivers load correctly and
there is no problem.
I went to the LSI Logic site to download the drivers directly from
there, but they apparently don't support RHEL5 as of yet for the

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Alle,

Apparently, I should have just "trusted the process". Doing a regular

RPMForge makes installing the nvidia drivers reasonably easy. Simply
run 'yum install nvidia-x11-drv' and then reboot.

Instructions for RPMForge are at http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/RPMForge

Hi again,

I have followed Jim's instructions to add the RPMforge repository and to
download the nvidia-x11-drv driver from there.

When rebooting after this the system instruct me to re-configure the X11
configuration, when doing this using the "gui" screens provided I cannot
select a screen but can select the nVidia card and then the nVidia
driver. The configuration generated still does not work - I attach a
copy of the Xorg.0.log generated. In this log there is a mention of
using the GLX driver/module from nVidia.

While inspecting /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions I noticed a
sub-directory "nvida" that contained a file "libglx.so". I renamed the
libglx.so file in /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions and copied the file
in the nvidia sub directory into it's place - and rebooted. The
reconfiguration of X11 still would not allow me to select a screen and
also did not work. I attach a copy of the Xorg log "Xorg.0.log.2" where
it seems as if the correct GLX module has now been found but without
giving me a useable X11 configuration.

Any suggestion on how to proceed from here would be welcome - if entails
getting another graphics card please suggest a suitable card that will
run without hassles.

Pardon the self-reply. Seems ATrpms got slashdotted and that some
family problems took priority over the move. The site is up for now but
has been limited as to the number of concurrent connections, so there
may still be some access problems - probably still best to leave ATrpms
disabled unless really needed.

We should exercise patience and wish Axel and his family well with a
sick child in the hospital, an international move on-hold, and server

[CentOS] Help with nis password changes

2007-08-30 Thread Scott Ehrlich
I normally try not to ask questions until I have done as much research as
possible, and again, this is the case...

Just after I thought I had my RH5 samba/nis server working fine, I come across
the inability to update nis passwords.

From the server as root:

passwd guest1
Changing password for user guest1.
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
NIS password could not be changed.
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully

For the heck of it:

yppasswd guest1
Changing NIS acount information for guest1 on server.
Please enter root password:
Changing NIS password for guest1 on server.
Please enter new password:
Please retype new password:
Error while changing the NIS password.
The NIS password has not been changed on the server.

The server was rebooted, but that didn't help.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

If you have a ton of file in /somedirectory/ then the shell will complain
when it tries to construct a list of arguments a mile long.

> Doing " rsync -a /somedirectory . " does work.

Yes, and you should also note the difference between /somedirectory and
/somedirectory/ which in rsync cause different things to happen.

If /somedir contains files a, and b, then this:

rsync -a /somedir /destdir

will create /destdir/somedir/a and /destdir/somedir/b

whereas:

rsync -a /somedir/ /destdir

will create /destdir/a and /destdir/b

I recommend RAID 1 for safety

a defective drive is something I should do. Lanny

Yes That is what i had thought. Total of 4 HDD is
3.0TB, so i presume each
HDD can be 750GB. But the IBM consultant insisted

Hi ppl .

IBM proposed me to get 2 RAID cards. Do you guys think i can do raid

both on hardware raid and then during the installation of centos 5, i
raid 1 on both the 2 sets of hardware raids?

Thanks

Buy a single raid card that can support raid 10 or raid 1+0.

The card IBM recommended is only 0,1 and they will not warranty any
parts which are not from IBM.
Then you could software raid the two raid sets, as they will show up
looking like scsi devices. Is the card they recommend a true hardware
raid card? Not a fakeraid like the ICH7 intel stuff.
So IBM will not warranty the raid card. They have to warranty the rest
of the system, and get a warranty on the raid card from the vendor. I
have done it with HP several times because the crappy Adaptec raid cards
they push are less than stellar performers, and their linux driver
support seems way behind the windows drivers.

Which x3200 were you looking at?
I could get up to 3.0 TB with 4 750 GB drives on the one I was just
looking at. And optional raid5. You could just raid1 with 2 500GB
drives.

The model i am getting is 436242A x32. IBM insisted that this machine is
not tested with 500GB SATA, and insisted me to pick up 4 x 250GB. If this
machine is able to support 2 x 500GB, I would just run software raid.
The raid card IBM is proposing is a PCI card which cost abour USD$300.
Can you recommend a good raid card which is able to do raid 10/1+0 and
very well supported by CentOS 5?

Thanks
I see. I just went to IBM's custom shop and was playing with the "build
it" options. You are buying it through the Express Options program which
doesn't let you customize the systems. If IBM won't give you what you
want, you can try some of the other makers like HP. Or you can get a 3ware
(AMCC) raid card. They are the best supported SATA cards in linux.

Thanks everyone. I found a local 3ware dealer. Keeping this dealer handy. If
this machine does not support the 500GB, i will get a 3ware 8506-4LP.

[CentOS] Fujitsu RX200 S3

2007-08-30 Thread Camron W. Fox

Alle,

I am trying to install CentOS 5 on a Dual Xeon 5160 FJ RX200 S3. The
RAID hardware is an internal LSI MPT 1068 SAS/RAID controller (LSI
1068SASIME-2300). I have downloaded the drivers (mptsas, mptscsih and
mptbase) and created the required floppy.
When I run linux dd after booting from either the DVD or Disk 1 of the
CentOS distro, it says it loads mptsas, mptbase and mptscsih and then
comes up with "No drivers of the appropriate type were found", etc...
Consequently, the RAID device is not found and no disks are available
for installation.
When I do this with RHEL5 Disk 1, the drivers load correctly and there
is no problem.
I went to the LSI Logic site to download the drivers directly from
there, but they apparently don't support RHEL5 as of yet for the LSISAS1068.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Camron

not tested with 500GB SATA, and insisted me to pick up 4 x 250GB. If
this machine is able to support 2 x 500GB, I would just run software
raid. The raid card IBM is proposing is a PCI card which cost abour
USD$300. Can you recommend a good raid card which is able to do raid
10/1+0 and very well supported by CentOS 5?

Thanks
I see. I just went to IBM's custom shop and was playing with the "build it"
options. You are buying it through the Express Options program which doesn't
let you customize the systems. If IBM won't give you what you want, you can
try some of the other makers like HP. Or you can get a 3ware (AMCC) raid card.
They are the best supported SATA cards in linux.

just to be accurate, this doesn't happen when using --no-dereference and it is
not
changing permissions to root, but to user who is the owner of the link, so:

All that you should need to do is install centos-release, remove
redhat-release rpms and just yum update the machine, which should bring
in all packages changed by CentOS ( since they will have a slightly
higher E-V-R ).

End of Migration.

I've seen 2 different error messages mentioned: "arg list to long", and "too
many files." The former is repeated a few times with the same misspelling
which casts doubt. The later makes more sense but has nothing to do with the
rsync's arguments.

Can you go back to the beginning and copy/paste the original command with the
actual error message?

Change your rsync command around a bit.

I would gather that you have a huge amount of files in the dir you're

Are you sure that was the exact command? Rsync can handle a huge number
of files internally, although it does require a certain amount of memory
for each filename in the tree during the transfer. You should only see
that 'arg list too long' error if you let the shell expand a wildcard
like * in a directory containing many files.

I usually prefer to go the source machine/directory and give the command
like "rsync -a . somemachine:/somedirectory", though.

[CentOS] strange chgrp behavior

2007-08-30 Thread Tomas Ruprich
Greetings,
i had a following problem, which on one side i have already solved, but
on other side i don't thing it should behave this way and wish somebody to
tell if it is feature or bug ;-)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] home]# chown user user/
[EMAIL PROTECTED] home]# ls -ld /home/user
drwxr-xr-x 66 user staff 4096 /home/user
[EMAIL PROTECTED] home]# chgrp -R staff user/
[EMAIL PROTECTED] home]# ls -ld user/
drwxr-xr-x 66 root staff 4096 user/
  ^^

I've been working on it hole afternoon, playing with user permissions,
moving home directories to others, debugging selinux and other things,
but at last, it was caused by

[EMAIL PROTECTED] home]# ls -la user/.openoffice/user/work
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 13 Aug 28 14:35 user/.openoffice/user/work -> /home/user

When i remove this symlink, everything works fine.

I tried this on CentOS 4.4 and 4.5 with
coreutils-5.2.1-31.4 and
coreutils-5.2.1-31.6
and both are doing this. CentOS 5 with
coreutils-5.97-12.1.el5
is already fine.

I've been searching through coreutils gnu.org archives, but found
nothing (maybe i'm not so experienced seeker ;-))

Thanks

I would use find and xargs. That's usually how I get around it.
You'll have to experiment though. Something like:
find ./ -type f | xargs scp .

Re: [CentOS] monitoring rsync backups on centos

2007-08-30 Thread Rob Lines
We went really simple with all the rsync commands being run from the same
machine. We point all the output from the rsync to a log file in /var/log
and then I usually just tail the file on a daily basis. Also if it runs
into actual errors cron ends up mailing directly.

We use this on our clusters to good effect though we use batched ssh calls
to tell each cluster node to run their backups but it is all called from the
same script on our head node so that only one backup opperation is running
at a time. It makes the logs cleaner and we don't run into a problem with
dozens of boxes all trying to sync data back to the head node at the same
time and slowing things down.

How many files are in the directory here? I've never run across this
sort of thing acting on the directory and not the files themselves.

[CentOS] Question about centos 4 or 5 install with software RAID

2007-08-30 Thread Jerry Geis

When doing software RAID-1 installs on reboot (just after install)
I ALWAYS get RAID device is not clear - preforming reconstruction.

Why is this? If I just installed the array should be in sync shouldnt it?
And clean?

Not that this is a big deal - it just seems odd. It does reconstruction and
life goes on.

Is something special at install time that we are only installing on one disk
of the array and after reboot it now says we are unclean and populates the
second disk in the array?

Thanks,

If you will search the list archives, 3Ware has been recommended, many
times, in recent months, on this ML.

Sometimes, it's worth ordering from overseas and paying for shipment and
customs. I've ordered many things from the USA and it is incredibly rare
that something has arrived DOA, in the past 12 years. If it is DOA, then
you are without a warranty and in deep stuff Look into 3Ware!

Seems like a reasonable hypothesis. How hard would it be to test it by

Recovery from a screwed MBR (Install GRUB)

1. Boot with a rescue CD
Go through the obligatory BS; network not needed
2. Once rescue finds Linux, hit OK. Do NOT do the chroot. Run grub.
Then, from the prompt:

  a. If /boot is an integral part of the / partition:

  b. If /boot is in a separate partition:

Grub answers with drive and partition: (hd1,0)
3. Set the root for grub:

4. Write the MBR on the 1st drive
  grub> setup (hd0)
(grub will print a bunch of crap, double-checking, and install itself.)
5. Remove the rescue CD and reboot.

When entering the values above, pay close attention to spaces and comma
characters!

I still think joining

 http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-docs

and contributing to the Wiki would better serve this audience.

An excellent start. With regard to firewalls, a simpler if less-secure
approach it to open the firewall to trusted machines on the local net.
Might want to address the "insecure" parameter in /etc/exports for those
using NAT. Fixing a few typos ("variou configuration" "But bere is")
would take you a bit further down the road in an asymptotic approach
toward perfection. :-)

Three comments about webmin:

(a) There is a huge (800 pages?) manual for webmin in .pdf format,
available for download from the webmin web site.

(b) I installed it on my Desktop (CentOS 5.0) a couple of weeks ago and
I ran into a problem, because I have SELinux running in Permissive Mode.
I first submitted to Bugzilla at Upstream and he tracked it down to
Webmin, so I moved the bug to sourceforge:

This is what Jamie wrote:

ASAP, I will get back to him and I'm sure he will solve the problem. :-)

(c) It is my belief (others, with much more webmin experience can
confirm or reject this thought), that webmin will be more reliable, when
it changes configuration files, than many of the GUI's from Upstream.

I have seen problems similar to this when BIOS and running system see
drives in a different order. Try making a GRUB boot floppy or CD, boot
from it, and use the GRUB shell "find" command to see where it thinks
things are located. See "info grub" for details. For example, if you
have a /boot partition:

grub> find /grub/stage2

If you do not have a /boot partition:

grub> find /boot/grub/stage2

See if the above agrees with where your grub.conf file says the grub
directory should be on the running system.

Unless the problem is a hardware failure, you should be able to boot
from the grub shell by properly specifying root, kernel, and initrd
lines with command-line completion for the latter two to point to
desired vmlinuz- and initrd-.img files. Again, will
need to include /boot on the path if you do not have a /boot partition,
exclude it if you do. The BIOS and running system can usually be made
to agree on device ordering by setting BIOS device ordering to match
what the running system expects, and/or by changing the order things are
seen via /etc/modprobe.conf. May also have to fix /boot/grub/device.map
to match.

[CentOS] Migration question?

2007-08-30 Thread Carl Boberg
Hi,

Im new in this list and I have recently started a project to migrate all
our servers from RHEL to Centos.
My question is if anyone have any tips/tricks regarding online migration
from RHEL to Centos, especially between ver. 5?
I have read most stuff I have found thru Google and the Centos wiki and
most migrations have worked fine except the RHEL 5 - Centos 5 migration.
Hit a few bumps and lost the rpm db and such...
Any tips/pointers/tricks/experiences are welcome.

Yes, I know a clean reinstall is the best thing to do.

have you actually installed the module?
(as root: make -C /lib/modules/... modules_install)

You might also need a "depmod -a" after installing it.

Then "modinfo ufs" should reply:

I wonder if this could be related to the fact that the metadata and data
are synchronized independently and not with the rsync --delay-updates

Yes - going into the 2nd day now. Axel said on the ATrpms-users list on

probably something broke. Best to disable ATrpms repos for now until he

[CentOS] NFS Question and answers

2007-08-30 Thread Rohit Rai
HI! Friends,

in followup to my last
articleregarding
my experiences with setting up CentOS,
taking the advice from Phil, I have written an article dealing with NFS
setup.

Please visit it at
http://mytechrantings.blogspot.com/2007/08/nfs-network-file-system.html

The article format is in "Questions and Answers" which I chose so that It
can be a increase Knowledge Base . . .

Please see to it and tell me what do you think about this format... And
leave any questions in the comment that I might have missed...
And ofcourse you are welcome to put in your thoughts and knowledge in the
topic there :D

I am planning to write more artciles in this series, already working on
them, one is on YUM setups for LANs and another one is on XEN and Virt
manager. But before I proceed I want to know about the format... will this
Q&A format be appealing enough???

Kind Regards,
Rohit Rai

The kernel module should be enough:
http://dev.centos.org/~tru/kernel-modules/centos-5/ufs.tgz
(ufs sources from 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5)

You need to have installed the kernel-devel rpm from your running kernel.
run the runme.sh script and install the module :)

Well, after re-reading, you're clearly right about that, Scott.

Sorry, Mike. Had I the image, I'd gladly seed.

Re: [CentOS] timeout when accessing atrpms repo

2007-08-30 Thread Gordon McLellan
Dave,

Something is wrong with all of atrpms.net ... I'm not sure what's going on,
they've been down at least 24hrs so far. Even their mailing list archives
are down, so I don't know where to go to find out what happened.

In the mean time this will get you working:

yum --disablerepo=atrpms update

or you can edit /etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo and set enabled=0

Re: [CentOS] What is eating my memory?

2007-08-30 Thread William Warren
your mahcine is fine. swap is at zero. You have most of your ram being
used by cache. This is also normal for a linux machine. If an
application needs to ram being used for file caching the kernel will
clear out that portion of cache and the program will have access to it.

Perhaps there is something I did not clean up properly wrt the move.

ufs is not enabled in the centosplus kernel (or the standard kernel).
It will be necessary to rebuild the kernel.

[CentOS] reading ufs2 filesystems with centosplus kernel

2007-08-30 Thread Dave

Hello,
I'm running centos5 with the centosplus kernel v2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 and i'm
trying to read a drive that has a ufs2 partition on it. It was originally in
a FreeBSD machine and has some data i'd like to get at. Googling indicated
this should work with the command:

mount -r -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2

device is /dev/hdb5 and mountpoint is /mnt. I'm getting an error unknown
filesystem type ufs. I'm assuming i have to load a module of some kind. Any
help appreciated.

Thanks.
Dave.

Hi All,

I am looking for a Point Of Sales software which can run on centos5,
does anyone have good pointer for this. It's for an organic shop open
by a non-profit organization. I am helping to set it up.

Sorry if I am out of topic, I am following this list this few months
and find it very helpful. Just hope to get some help.

Thanks in advance.

[CentOS] MIssing Log Entries in /var/log/messages

2007-08-30 Thread Frank Jahn
Hello,

has something changed in CentOS 5 logging behavior? I get no entries in
/var/log/messages when I start or stop services (httpd, ssh, etc.).
My /etc/syslog.conf is the installation default:

# Log all kernel messages to the console.
# Logging much else clutters up the screen.
#kern.* /dev/console

# Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
# Don't log private authentication messages!
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none/var/log/messages

# The authpriv file has restricted access.
authpriv.* /var/log/secure

# Log all the mail messages in one place.
mail.* -/var/log/maillog

# Log cron stuff
cron.* /var/log/cron

# Everybody gets emergency messages
*.emerg *

# Save news errors of level crit and higher in a special file.
uucp,news.crit /var/log/spooler

# Save boot messages also to boot.log
local7.*/var/log/boot.log

Any Ideas?

Best regards

Frank Jahn
