[CentOS] Antwort: Re: Dell E6410

2010-10-26 Thread Andreas Reschke
Hello,
I'm using the same modell and everything works, exceppt the graphics. In
the meantime I'm testing Red Hat 6 Beta 2. The graphics ist not as fast as
Fedora 13.

Does anyone has a working solution for the graphics?

Thanks

onboard graphics in those Core-I* things is in the CPU chip, *not* the
chipset. the chipset provides the graphics output path only. The
graphics is in the CPU chip because the memory controller is also in the
CPU chip.

I believe it uses the IGDNG driver, not i810 or whatever. I have no
idea how well CentOS supports this, you might have better luck on that
laptop with Fedora Latest.

I recently had major problems getting Fedora 13 to work on the E6410 ( worked
fine on the E6510 ;-) )

See the thread "Fedora 13 on Dell E6410 screen resolution problem" on the
Fedora Mailing list for a discussion and solution to the problem.

The laptop had a NVidia graphics controller, unlike yours, and the solution
involved using the propritory NVidia drivers.

For completeness,

Turns out that getting root with 3856 on CentOS-5 atleast isn't
copy-n-paste-trivial. The suggested exploit using libpcprofile.so fails since
that file comes from glibc-utils which (afaict) typically isn't installed.

That said, it seems very likely that there are other ways to exploit 3856 on
CentOS-5 so do not in any way interpret this as "lets skip the update".

[CentOS] VNC Question

2010-10-26 Thread James Bensley
Hi Everybody :)

I'm sorry if this is unwanted noise but I'm struggling to find the
answer to what is probably a ridiculously simply problem. Setup
vncserver but it likes to run as a user (reading parameters from
~/.vnc/xstartup of the user the process runs as).

When I start vncserver and connect in I am dropped into a running copy
of X of that users desktop, how can I instead have it display the
login screen instead?

You need to exclude the LVs in the host VG from being scanned for sub-VGs. It's
actually easier to just list what SHOULD be scanned rather than what shouldn't.

Look in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf

You can also avoid this by creating partition based PVs in the VMs rather then
whole disk PVs which would need kpartx run on the host LV before LVM could scan
it.

[CentOS] X windows won't start after update to autofs

2010-10-26 Thread Gilbert Sebenste
Hello everyone,

Maybe this doesn't make sense, but after I updated autofs yesterday and
rebooted this morning, X windows won't go. It tries with the old
configuration---doesn't work. It tries a fresh config and fails. I can't
copy and paste, but it says screens found, but no usable configuration.

Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config,

(EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuble configuration.
Fatal server error: No screens found

Anyone have ideas?

My first thought is that you're mixing two issues: are you *sure* that you
rebooted after the last kernel update? If not, I'd think it's looking at
the wrong drive. This isn't, um, an nVidia card, is it?

[CentOS] Memory warning

2010-10-26 Thread m . roth
Folks,

Something to watch out for: in the last few months, we've gotten a
bunch of new computers (end of budget year), and several have had
serious memory errors. If they were all from one manufacturer, I'd
figure it was them, but we have had this happen on a Sun, a Dell, and a
Penguin, and the large memory (4G, 8G) in all of them was manufactured
by Hynix.

Yeah noted a few times in the last week. Doesn't seem to impact overall update

[CentOS] Every user in LDAP queried when one user logs on.

2010-10-26 Thread Gerrard Geldenhuis
Hi
I have configured a machine to authenticate against LDAP. When I log onto the
box using the newly created user I see a LDAP search request for every user
that exist in the directory. If I have only 20 users even a 100 that is not a
problem but when I start going to 1 users I start getting some weird errors
and timeouts because of the time it takes to download the data to the client.

I have tested this against 389 Directory Server and OpenLDAP and both give the
same behaviour described above.

I have tried adding a nss_base directives in /etc/ldap.conf but it has had no
effect.

my /etc/ldap.conf:

binddn uid=SysAuth,ou=Service Accounts,dc=mycompany
bindpw secret
pam_password clear
basedc=betfair
nss_base_passwd ou=people,dc=mycompany?sub
nss_base_group ou=Groups,dc=mycompany?sub
nss_base_group ou=PrivateGroups,dc=mycompany?sub
nss_base_group ou=SystemGroups,dc=mycompany?sub

sizelimit 1000
idle_timelimit 5
timelimit 10
bind_timelimit 5
nss_reconnect_tries 1
nss_reconnect_maxconntries 1
nss_reconnect_sleeptime 1
nss_reconnect_maxsleeptime 1
nss_reconnect_maxconntries 1

I have also played around with various debug levels in /etc/ldap.conf but I
have not really been succesfull in matching requests I see there to requests I
see in wireshark. The man page in centos (man pam_ldap and nss_ldap ) also does
not make any mention of available log levels or what they do. I have also
scanned the source code for some more info on log levels but did not find
anything usefull. If it is in the source code then please point me to it.

I have gone through the pam list logs and the closest I could find was the
following thread:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/pam-list/2009-September/thread.html and a
similar thread in December 2010. This threads although similar is related to
groups and my problem is with every user being queried.

I am fairly certain (hopeful at least) that is a config error on my part but I
have not been able to find that error yet and would welcome any assistance in
finding the problem.

My system-auth in /etc/pam.d/ looks as follows:

authrequired pam_env.so
authsufficientpam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass
authrequisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 500 quiet
authsufficientpam_ldap.so use_first_pass
authrequired pam_deny.so

account required pam_access.so
account required pam_unix.so broken_shadow
account sufficientpam_localuser.so
account sufficientpam_succeed_if.so uid < 500 quiet
account [default=bad success=ok user_unknown=ignore] pam_ldap.so debug
account required pam_permit.so

passwordrequisite pam_cracklib.so try_first_pass retry=3
passwordsufficientpam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass use_authtok
passwordsufficientpam_ldap.so use_authtok
passwordrequired pam_deny.so

session optional pam_keyinit.so revoke
session required pam_limits.so
session optional pam_mkhomedir.so
session [success=1 default=ignore] pam_succeed_if.so service in crond quiet
use_uid
session required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_ldap.so

Using CentOS release 5.4 on the client and 5.5 on the server but I see the same
result if the server is on 5.4.

Try replacing "?sub" with "?one".

You would benefit from posing this question to the Samba mailing list:

sa...@lists.samba.org

Do you want to set the ACLs from the Windows side or from the Unix
server side?

What do you use to store ACLs? Linux ACLs? A Samba VFS module?

Why would you type "could not prepare" if the error message says
"Cannot prepare"?

If you google for the actual error message (and it sometimes pays to
wrap it in quotes, especially if you're adding extra terms), you'll get
useful results.

And ClamAV 0.96.4 was available from RPMforge since yesterday, so if all
is well updating your system should fix this (harmless) message.

Not sure you can directly use rm for that, but you could find the uid of
the user in /etc/passwd, then run find and -exec on it with rm.

To view them:

cat /etc/passwd | grep "USER"

find /path -uid 123 -exec ls -la {} \;

To delete them, then use -exec rm -rf {} \;

Be CAREFUL though!

How is that going to mesh with updating packages that expect the stock
tools to be used to restart themselves?
