[CentOS] skype not starting anymore, prelink issue?

2013-01-30 Thread wwp
Hello there!

I was running skype 4.1.0.20 on my 64-bit laptop for weeks (installed
in /opt, from an official skype binary archive, plus few 32-bit stuff
to get it working), when suddenly it stopped working, no way to start
it:

 $ skype
Fatal: QWidget: Must construct a QApplication before a QPaintDevice
 Aborted

A quick search on the Internet brought some possible solution,
basically configuring prelink to skip skype binary, uninstall skype,
reinstall it. I was doubtful about uninstall/reinstall step since I
didn't install it using a RPM but from a binary archive. Anyway I did
it, restarted even the computer. No way to start skype.

For now I'm stuck w/ an former staticQT 4.0.0.8 version of skype, which
has no support for MSN accounts. Please note that I'm not using
skype+msn because I want, but because I need to (@work).

Did anybody ever solve this issue or has a clue about how to do it?

Regards,

On CentOS 5, I used the "mail-notification" software package provided

You might consider having your MUA do the notifying rather than having an
applet go check your inbox for you.
I'm mostly using thunderbird for e-mail, and it actually also supports
notification via pop-ups. But:

Understandable.

I'm guessing this is what you've used in the past.

Actually, what I used on CentOS 5 was the below mentioned software.

Which is really the same as the one referenced above, I now notice ;-)

I've now managed to build my own rpm for this, by combining the last
source code release from the above, the spec file from the EPEL 5 source
rpm, a bit of trial, and let's not forget, a fair amount of error, too.
I'll try to attach the spec file...

Before that, i.e. on EL 4, I believe something else was included in the
main distro, but I don't remember what.

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/name/mail-notification
Even though the package is listed it appears nobody has packaged it in EPEL
(for example).
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/repoview/letter_m.group.html

Well, it is actually included in EPEL 5, but not 6.

Not as simple, but you might consider building it on your system.

I tried both binary and source rpms from EPEL5, but it didn't work too
well. Actually, the problem wasn't mail-notification itself, but rather
eel2, which it requires. This used to be part of the main distribution,
but isn't any more. Binaries from past versions have dependencies that
are hard to resolve, and an attempt to rebuild from source rpm failed
with the below error messages. Maybe I can find away around this, but I
don't have time to try right now...

[CentOS] Question about /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf

2013-01-30 Thread Robert Moskowitz
I don't know if this file comes from clam or amavis-new, but

It contains the comment and command:

# Run as a selected user (clamd must be started by root)
User amavis

Is this conf file for clam or amavis?

As in /etc/clamd.conf we have:

# Run as another user (clamd must be started by root for this option to
work)
# Default: don't drop privileges
User clam

# Initialize supplementary group access (clamd must be started by root).
# Default: no
AllowSupplementaryGroups yes

Then in /etc/amavisd.conf (the real? conf file for amavis-new) in the
Clamav section are comments:

# # Note: run clamd under the same user as amavisd, or run it under its own
# # uid such as clamav, add user clamav to the amavis group, and then add
# #   AllowSupplementaryGroups to clamd.conf;

So is clam running under its user or amavis? Why is this last comment
pointing to the 'old' clamav userid?

[CentOS] "Can't install ... as no transaction" from PackageKit (CentOS 6)

2013-01-30 Thread Toralf Lund
Hello again,

Does anyone have any idea what the following message in the package
installer - gpk-install-local-file - is supposed to mean?

Can't install /tmp/mail-notification-4.0-3.el5.x86_64.rpm as no transaction

(Under "More details" in the "Local install failed" popup.)

This is something I got while trying to set up a "mail notification"
icon - refer to my other recent post. I happen to know what (part of)
the problem is - the package has dependencies that can't be resolved,
but why doesn't the message just say so? And what's the meaning of a
"transaction" anyway? Mind you, I believe I understand the word
perfectly well, but in the above sentence it still makes no sense to me...

To reproduce this, you may try (on a CentOS 6) system:

 1. In a web browser, go to

http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/repoview/mail-notification.html
or
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/repoview/mail-notification.html
depending on your architecture.
 2. Click on the rpm link.
 3. Select "Open with"->"Package Installer (default)".
 4. Answer "Install" when asked if you want to install the file (after
it's downloaded.)
 5. Click "More details" when the error popup appears.

I suspect, though, that you may actually see a sensible "dependency"
message, i.e. that this is sometimes correctly displayed, sometimes not.

It depends on what the 3rd party is doing. In the case of PKI, the 3rd
party is providing an attestation service. This is normally good, and
presents little risk to the user(s). Exposure to tracking usage would
be if OCSP (online cert checking, I suspect I got the wrong letters
here) is used.

In the case of federated password identities and things like SAML and
JSON, security CAN be good, but tracking is high.

Disclaimer: I am in the 3rd party authentication business. I am
involved with Verizon's UIS (do a Google search on it :) ) and PKI.

That's a good point to question.

I was in no way endorsing that one should use Google's Auth services.
(Just that it exists and has been written about numerous times.)

Personally I do not use it now and would not use it for any systems that
need to be secure. Which pretty much means unless I can run the auth
daemons on a server I control, I won't be using it.

is it? so your rpms come from rpmforge? I thought you mentioned epel at

If you are, then that might be your problem.
If you really followed the wiki instructions you must be using RF

And if you're using epel, then you didn't follow the wiki instructions

Re: [CentOS] Centos 6.3 - which repos to use?

2013-01-30 Thread Bry8 Star
* Another way to use multiple repo, other than what i
mentioned in previous email (different repo with different
priority# ), is to:
* Set all repo's base, main/default, stable, extra, etc
sections/channels on priority 10, and set all repo's other
channels/sections like "testing", (source, debuginfo, )
etc on priority 15:
repo#1 main-sections priority 10, others 15
repo#2 main-sections priority 10, others 15
repo#3 main-sections priority 10, others 15
repo#4 main-sections priority 10, others 15
* Use only RHEL compatible channels of any repo. (Avoid
fedora, generic, other-non-Rhel-distro, etc, unless you
are getting source/src.rpm/SRPM for rebuilding on CentOS ).
* Since they all has same priority, highest/last version
will get highest preference.
* run : yum groupinfo "Base"
It will show Mandatory, Default, etc app list for CentOS.
And run this before adding other repo, so that you get a
fresh list related only to CentOS.
* run : yum check-update
or, run : yum list updates

(First try without --enablerepo=\* option )
* You will see, (or If you see,) any other 3d party repo
(other than CentOS ) app/libs, is/are trying to replace
base/core components from CentOS Mandatory, Default, etc
category areas, then put those pkgs/apps/libs in
"exclude=pkg-name ..", inside those 3rd party repo, so
that those pkgs do not replace base/core CentOS components.
* And, if you choose a very specific app/lib from a very
specific repo, for example, postgresql from Postgresql
repo, then see my previous email for "exclude" list, place
those postgresql related pkgs/items in all repo in their
all sections/channels other than Postgresql repo itself,
including CentOS repo in all sections/channels.
* Do not do actual update, unless you see or you are 100%
sure, shown repo and apps/libs/pkg are coming from the
repo/channel which you want and safe, if you are not sure,
ask for help here but search on google, read more docs,
manuals, and research little bit first.
* If you search with words like these : "pkgname error
problem" or "pkgname error problem centos", then you
should/will see what kind of error or problem may occur
with that pkg. Take steps so that no error occurs.

Please correct my mistake(s) on these simple (above )
suggestions, info.
Thanks,
-- Bright Star.

 Hi.

Does anyone know of a way to add a "new mail" notification icon to the
 panel/system tray under CentOS 6?
On CentOS 5, I used the "mail-notification" software package provided by
the Fedora "EPEL" distribution, but this is gone from the version 6
repository, and the one from version 5 won't install just like that due
to dependency issues. Maybe it's possible to resolve those, but I'm
wondering if that's the way to go, or if there is a better alternative
 these days.

[CentOS] Installing RHEL On Laptop.....

2013-01-30 Thread Eddie G. O'Connor Jr.
Not sure if this is the right place to come to, but I don't have "RHN"
support.I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

I have downloaded the RHEL .ios file and burned it to DVD/CD, my laptop
is primed to Boot From CD/ROM Drive, I start the installation using the
semi-graphical interface, and the first few options are a breeze, then
it gets to identifying the CD drive and it asks me which driver I want
to usethere's only a list of about 10 and NONE of them work, when I
select it, it searches for a minute, then it goes back to the "Install
Your CD Drive" screen. Is there some way to skip this part? or to have
the install disc automatically find this info? Did I download the wrong
version of RHEL? (supposedly it's free...but I do not know this for
suremaybe there's a "different" version than the one with the paid
subscription and support?) Any help someone can give would be
appreciatedI've included the output of my lshw in the hopes that
someone can point me to the file that I need to get past this point?

Cheers!

Re: [CentOS] Centos 6.3 - which repos to use?

2013-01-30 Thread Bry8 Star
When using multiple repo, then how would i know, an
app/lib from non-CentOS (that is, 3rd party repo) is going
to conflict or not with CentOS core, base, essential
app/lib packages ?

We need to know CentOS core, base, essential components.

According to this file:

/usr/lib/anaconda/installclasses/rhel.py

That is located inside the mounted image of this below file:
http://mirror.centos.org/centos-6/6/os/x86_64/images/install.img

or
http://mirror.centos.org/centos-6/6/os/x86/images/install.img

* A CentOS Basic Server has : base, console-internet,
core, debugging, directory-client, hardware-monitoring,
java-platform, large-systems, network-file-system-client,
performance, perl-runtime, server-platform.
* Database Server : Basic Server (shown above), and,
mysql-client, mysql, postgresql-client, postgresql,
system-admin-tools.
* Web Server: Basic Server (shown above), and,
mysql-client, php, postgresql-client, turbogears,
web-server, web-servlet.

So below command will show what app/lib/pkg are in "Basic
Server", and should not be replaced by a 3rd party repo
packages:

yum groupinfo base core "Console internet tools"
"Directory Client" "Java Platform" "Network file system
client" "Server Platform" debugging large-systems
performance perl-runtime hardware-monitoring
--disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=base,extra,update
--disableplugin=filter-data,priorities --disableexcludes=all

in above, it is, one command-line, (text-based
email-system will break it, so remove LF/CR char to get
full command-line )

You must try to avoid replacing those, (centos essential
packages).

Copy the list in a text file, remove lines(LF/CR), make
paragraphs, and print it out or keep the text file easily
accessible location. So you can see it to decide, on 3rd
party repo which package should be placed inside "exclude".

If there is/are mistake(s) in above suggestion, please
correct.
Please post better, other way(s) to achieve these.

Thanks,
-- Bright Star.

Read near the top of the amavis config file. It will reference the
directories you are having trouble with. It tells you to create them and
that they need to be owned by whatever you set the amavis user to be. It
is all right there in the conf file.

You are backporting pkgs from fedora to el6.
Imho you should supply your manpower to epel, because epel provides
backported pkgs!
