[CentOS] Disable Kernel Screen Blanker

2013-08-04 Thread Mark LaPierre
Hey Y'all,

I'm trying to turn off the kernel screen blanker that shuts off the
video after about 10 minutes of inactivity at the keyboard. After
extensive googling I've found two ways to *NOT* do it.

In my home .xinitrc

setterm -blank 0 -powersave off -powerdown 0
xset s off

In /etc/rc.local

/usr/bin/setterm -powersave off -blank 0

I've tried both to no effect.

Of course I've turned off the screen saver in the Gnome desktop.

How do I stop this machine from blanking the screen with no activity? I
want video full time!

I know someone is going to ask, Why do you want to do that?, so to
save you from asking.

1. I'm setting up a kiosk that customers can use interactively. It's
not very inviting to passers by when the screen is blank.

2. I want to watch movies and Skype without having to poke the mouse all
the time.

3. My monitor is very unhappy when the video signal is cut off.

4. My wife is very unhappy when the screen goes blank.

5. Insert your reason here. I just want it to stop. ;-)

No joy, either this, nor zoneminder. Right now, we just have motion
running on the servers that have the USB cameras plugged in; after the
recent grief we had with the last upgrade to CentOS, when I wound up
moving one camera that just would not work - the top 10% of the screen
was fine, and the rest green, and the other I had to change the
resolution to 240x360 to get it to not do that, my manager asked me to
look into appliances that we could manage from our servers.

We've found Zmodo, and another one, but with *both* of them, though the
DVR that comes with the set is running Linux, web control *REQURES* IE,
and you can't log in directly using ssh or telnet.
If the camera is running on Windows, you can probably stream directly
from the device using ffmpeg. See here for details:
  http://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/DirectShow
You would set the input as the camera and the output as a file, and add
any codec options you want, etc...

I'm sure there's probably a similar mode for Linux. If nothing else,
you can probe the camera to see what modes it supports, etc..., to make
sure you're picking one that works,

Ok, I *must* not have made clear what I was asking for. Let me try one
 more time

We want an appliance, such as

 http://www.zmodo.com/4ch-h-264-full-d1-dvr-500gb-hdd-with-4-cmos-480tvl-ir-outdoor-security-cameras-with-11-leds.html
 ,
that we can put on our network, and manage, and d/l videos for long-term
storage, onto a server. We have exactly, um, two? boxes running Windows,
and we normally do *nothing* with them. We've over 100 servers running
Linux, and that's where we live.

Currently, the USB cameras are connected to -CENTOS SERVERS-, no WinCrap
at all. We use the standard package motion to record for surveillance.
We're looking for an appliance, like the link I give above, that we can
manage the same way that we manage an HP printer, which does *NOT* require
IE, and we can do with firefox, or probably even konqueror. At the very
least, we want to use, say, wget, to d/l the videos.

 NOTHING RUNNING WINDOWS

Now, if I can calm myself down, have I made it clear what it is we're
looking for? If so, can anyone recommend a source for such an appliance?

 mark

Hi Mark,

If you lay off the coffee for a minute and actually take a look at what
people are suggesting, you'll see that ffmpeg is a standard, cross
platform, very versatile (basically industry standard) tool for
manipulating audio/video files, and it also has good support for capturing
from devices. Frankly I had assumed that you had probably already heard of
it. It's the swiss army knife of video, and it works perfectly well on
Linux as well as Windows. I only mentioned Windows because that's where I
had recently used it for device capture.

❧ Brian Mathis

P.S. Should I also point out how far off topic this is, since you seem to
want some sort of appliance?

[CentOS] ghostscript-8.70-14.el5_8.1.x86_64 hylafax+ 5.5.3

2013-08-04 Thread Gregory P. Ennis
I am having some problems with hylafax+ on CentOS 5.9 converting files
into appropriate tiff files that are faxable; the problem is apparently
fixed in ghostscript 9.07.

The CentOS repositories currently have
ghostscript-8.70-14.el5_8.1.x86_64

I surely appreciate the maintainers of the repositories; can any of you
direct me to whom maintains ghostscript on the repository or when 9.07
is planned to be included. I would also like to request that ghostpcl
be included, but I am not certain who or how to ask.

Thanks for your assistance.

Major version bumps in the core Centos packages are relatively uncommon,
barring major bugs and the like. We may (or may not) see ghostscript 9.x in
Centos 7 when it is released but I would be somewhat surprised to see it in
Centos 6 and below.

If you really need the latest version you may be able to compile it yourself.
I do that with some of the software that I use on my Centos systems.

Frank,

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid that might be the answer. So far
it looks like a major problem with hylafax+. I have very little
experience compiling my own versions, and my results have not resulting
in bragging rituals. Looks like I have some things to learn. Is there
a way to be able to compile the 9.07 in different directories so that I
do not destroy 8.70 or the libraries.

Of course. You can simply compile the tarball or the rpm, assuming that your

Of course. You can simply compile the tarball or the rpm, assuming that your

You could start with Ghostscript from Fedora 19, it has 9.07

source rpm :
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/2/search/ghostscript-9.07-3.fc19.src.rpm

i686 version:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/21816498/dir/fedora_19/com/ghostscript-devel-9.07-3.fc19.i686.rpm.html

First try installing compiled rpm on a TEST system, and if that does not
work you can try recompiling the source rpm, or ask someone to help you,
maybe maintainer of ghostscript in Fedora.

if you rebuild it via the RPM, it likely will overwrite the 'stock'
ghostscript.

a tarball install could be built to run in /usr/local/ghostscript/... or
/opt/mystuff/ghostscript/... or whatever, and not interfere with the
distribution build.

Right, but the proposed command doesn't make it much different...
instead of the 1st through 7th plus every Saturday as it should
currently be running,

15 4 1-7 * 7 /home/app/oracle/backup/monthlybk.sh

would make it run the 1st through the 7th and every Sunday... when what

It seems to me if the asker wants to run it only 1 day per month,
they're going to have to pick a day and put up with the fact that
sometimes it's going to happen during weekdays, unless they want to
twiddle with it every month.
e.g.

15 4 1 * * /home/app/oracle/backup/monthlybk.sh

should make it run only on the 1st of the month at 4:15am. (right?)

Anyway, thanks for the reply. :)
