thank you both for the advice. Can you tell me where exactly they have
got the appropriate RPMs to CentOS 7 from?

The closest I can find in under

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

but the RPMs for Enterprise Linux are only available for the 6 Series.

When trying to install such a RPM I get an error message which
consequently complains that Python is installed in the wrong version.
This is probably an easy problem to solve, but I'd like to avoid to
contaminate my installation with third party packets when it is
"official" is a way.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Matthias

A number of drivers have been disabled in RHEL/CentOS-7. As explained
in Ned's post, forcedeth is one of them. Why do we know that's the
right driver? The OP provided the deviceID pairing [10DE:0760]. You
can find it in ELRepo's web page at http://elrepo.org/tiki/DeviceIDs .

By the way there is a request to enable it in the centosplus kernel (
http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7359 ), so it will be there in the
next kernel update.

Was it not detected or not enabled? By default, NO network ports are
enabled on RHEL (and thus on Centos) since CentOS 6. See
http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/CentOS6 Question #2.

During installation, there is a spot to "Configure" your network ports.
One of the options in the configuration is to "Enable on startup" or
something similar. That box is not checked by default. If you check it,
you network port will usually work as you expect.

This device uses the forcedeth driver which is disabled in the CentOS 7
kernel.

You can use the kmod-forcedeth driver from elrepo.org:

I don't have a running Centos 7 in front of me, so this is an educated
guess: Is there a separate line for "parameters" or "arguments"? I recall
seeing a form like that, where the command went in one box, and the
arguments in a different box. The program put them together to create the
complete command line.

I recall some time back having run a 64-bit guest on a 32-bit Vbox
installed on a 32-bit Centos running on 64-bit hardware.

but that may not be the situation to which the OP refers.

[CentOS] CentOS-7 problem

2014-07-12 Thread Timothy Murphy
I installed CentOS-7 on an HP MicroServer
from a KDELiveCD (on a USB stick),
and it ran OK for a couple of days;
but yesterday it wouldn't reboot -
the dots went round the circle indefinitely,
and when I clicked on Ctrl-Alt-Delete it said
"[OK] Reached target Initrd Default Target".
There didn't seem to be any way to reboot
except to press the power button.

I tried running the rescue kernel,
but that didn't help.

I tried installing the netinstall iso on a USB stick,
and choosing the repair option -
this ran ok, and I was able to run grub2-install,
but this failed to boot as before.

I'm wondering if there is anything else I could do
to resuscitate the system?

Fortunately, I kept the old 6.5 system in another partition,
which I am using now.

they offer binaries for all the "big" linux versions, inncluding .RPM
for RHEL/Oracle Linux, and you would use that one for Centos.

What they don't have yet, is the "guest additions" for EL7. I assume
that will become available when Oralce Linux 7 becomes available.

I just tried the USB stick method, using the
CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-Everything.iso as the media. The command line I
used to copy the iso to the stick was:

ddrescue --force CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-Everything.iso /dev/sdb

where /dev/sdb is my USB stick. I use ddrescue simply because it tends
to be faster than dd for large images and it gives a progress display
(and it's in the repos for CentOS 6).

The stick booted just fine into the installer, and while I did the media
verification step I did not proceed to install (it was just a test boot).

That’s probably true.

But still, I believe that much of the complexity of systemd (that it apparently
has) comes from the fact that it’s most intended to provide a „smooth“ desktop
experience.

Now, it looks like almost everything is a „service“.

Can I pick an example?

[root@ipa ~]# systemctl list-unit-files |grep ssh
sshd-keygen.service static
sshd.serviceenabled
sshd@.service static
sshd.socket disabled

What is the difference between sshd.service and sshd@.service?
Am I right in assuming that the sshd-keygen.service is responsible for creating
the initial host-keys?

I may be wrong, but sshd works nice on my 100+ servers without a special
service for this. In fact, I loathed the Solaris-behavior, where you had to
„refresh“ the service for this (or something to this effect)
On FreeBSD, if I want to create new keys, I delete the old ones and restart the
service.
I very rarely need that, so I just assume it’s the same on RHEL.

Can anyone give an example from a stock RHEL7 install that could not have been
done with a traditional SysV-init?

Replying to Les' comment: the original inittab respawn method is
completely brain-dead, blindly respawning without any thought for what
conditions might need to be checked, etc.

Replying to David: So you'd prefer the overhead of cron plus shells plus
a bit of arcane syntax? When I first replied to this crontab line, I
honestly thought you were being tongue-in-cheek.

I have a similar sort of kluge in place, on a CentOS 6 system at a
client, that uses the autossh package to hold open ssh reverse tunnels;
reverse tunnels are great when the client's machine is behind a
known-to-change-frequently dynamic address.

Sounds like something that systemd's concept of process dependencies
could solve for you with an easier (and non-executable) syntax. Systemd
provides an 'OnFailure' directive that allows you to do whatever you'd
like upon failure of an particular 'unit.' That sort of mechanism might
allow you to implement the process equivalent of Cisco IOS' IP SLA's.
(You could mount /etc (and /var) noexec and have /usr and friends
mounted read-only, even.)

This is why sysadmin configs for systemd are in /etc and the OS-supplied
configs are in /usr. Your /etc 'units' to systemd will override the OS
installed ones, and are all collected together in one well-defined and
standard place.

This is why sysadmin configs for systemd are in /etc and the OS-supplied
configs are in /usr. Your /etc 'units' for systemd will not be touched
by the updates to the OS-supplied ones.

If you can figure out IPv6 then systemd should be no sweat.

I have done all of the various init styles at various times, so I make
this statement having 27 years of experience dealing with Unix-like
systems (I won't bore anyone with the list): in my quick perusal of
systemd and its documentation, I'm cautiously optimistic that maybe
finally we have something that a sysadmin can really make sing. Time
will tell, of course, whether systemd actually addresses the core
problems or not; we've already had one round of an init replacement,
Upstart, that didn't succeed in fully addressing the core problems (but
will be with us until 2020 as part of EL6). And I always reserve the
right to be wrong.

But traditional SystemV init last appears in EL5, which, while it is
still supported until 2017, is two major versions old at this point. And
in case you missed the announcement from Red Hat, EL5.11 is the last
minor version update of EL5, with subsequent updates being released as
they come and not batched into point releases. (I now know my last
targeted version for IA64 rebuilding, which is good.as long as I can
put in some automation to grab updates from then on).

It is how first boot now works. Whether or not it is an improvement at
all is questionable .. but it is what it is. We didn't add it to CentOS
on purpose, its like upstream.

My Logitech wireless mouse model M510 is NOT affected by this bug. I just
plugged it into my laptop that I have Centos 7 installed on, and it works
perfectly.
