Re: [CentOS] Yum cant find kernel-pae

2014-09-09 Thread Bob Metelsky
its 64 bit - (first post)

actually this is a dell 9100 (desktop)

I had 2 pairs - 2gb each of ram different manufacturer
actually I have 3 pairs of 2gb - any combination has the same results in
memtest

1 pair in white
1 pair in black

boots without memory beep errors
memtest fails badly on any test with 8gb
bios sees the memory

I was running 2 2 gb originally
now I have 4 1gb - so each slot is used and it tests perfect

Basically this is a lab setup for a 4 node hadoop cluster. This is the head
node and needs the most ram - Id really like to get 8 but Ill live with 4
 (if I have to)

So should my kernel support > 4gb? see below

Thank you all for your time!

2014-09-08 Thread Bob Metelsky
uname -a is in the original message.

See to be a problem with the board

any memory I put in the black slots will fail with memtest..

damm

I was hoping if the pc booted up with about that annoying memory beep - I
was ok... I memtested and it failed

[CentOS] Any information on targetcli (fcoe) for centos 6? Close to end of my rope

2014-05-01 Thread Bob Metelsky
Guys, Im trying very hard to get a poc iscsi target/initiator working
between 2 centos 6 machines. The targetcli seems buggy as hell - meaning it
does not look updated for the current version of centos or other
distributions output

some output -

 notice the 2011 year

and I dont have the iscsi directory.

It seems commands can only be issued out of the corresponding directory...
I want to disable suthentication ie

/iscsi> set discovery_auth enable=0

Unknown configuration group: discovery_auth

I dont have the ISCSI directory!

OMG!

apparently this is the install for targetcli...

fcoe-target-utils.noarch fcoe-utils.i686

Is there any relatively direct documentation on how to set this up?

I wasnt to use iscsi as a san replicator for oracle ASM and NOT use
openfiler. I want to do this just from centos 6 to centos 6

this is very strange

I ran your flush command.. worked untill reboot

I came across this article
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/01/redhat-iptables-flush/

Basically tell me how to save a wide open rules file - I did this and
behaved like the doc describes

This is what I have now

- until I reboot then I get the same jibberish...

I don't understand what or why iptables is being called?

I believe anything in /etc/rc.d/init.d/* will get run on startup. If I
move those files out of there - obviously the command wont work - but I
need to understand whats going on

I want status to tell me OFF

 /etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables status

[CentOS] Firewall will not disable - stumped!

2013-07-07 Thread Bob Metelsky
very perplexed here - I need to turn off iptables. Ive tried

service iptables save
service iptables stop
chkconfig iptables off

service ip6tables save
service ip6tables stop
chkconfig ip6tables off

edited
OPGX280 ~ # cat /etc/sysconfig/system-config-firewall
# Configuration file for system-config-firewall
--disabled
--service=ssh

OPGX280 ~ :( # cat /etc/selinux/config
SELINUX=disabled

OPGX280 ~ :( # chkconfig |grep ip
ip6tables 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
ipmievd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
ipsec 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
iptables0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
ipvsadm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

Yet - when I reboot iptables gets started - if I run

OPGX280 ~ # /etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables status
Table: filter
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
num target prot opt source destination
1ACCEPT udp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:53
2ACCEPT tcp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:53
3ACCEPT udp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:67
4ACCEPT tcp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:67

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
num target prot opt source destination
1ACCEPT all -- 0.0.0.0/0192.168.122.0/24state
RELATED,ESTABLISHED
2ACCEPT all -- 192.168.122.0/24 0.0.0.0/0
3ACCEPT all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0
4REJECT all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0
reject-with icmp-port-unreachable
5REJECT all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0
reject-with icmp-port-unreachable

Note --> 192.168.122.0/24 is NOT my network, I just want the status to
tell me iptables is NOT running

What else can I look for??

Thanks

Re: [CentOS] Basic Network question pinging different subnets

2007-11-16 Thread Bob Metelsky

Any ideas why this is happening? I dont have a firewall on the 10.54
address,

presumably, the windows machine is connected to the 'eth0' network
that the centos machines are connected to?

how exactly do you expect the packets to get from there to the other
network? the windows machine has been instructed to forward all
unknown packets to 10.54.7.1, which presumably is some other sort of
router... chances are, said 10.54.7.1 has no clue where 10.54.0.xxx is.

Ya- I see - your right the router is 10.54.7.1 The rest of the network
switches are hubs off of that (all still 10.54.7.)

this private network is truly private (independent to the 2 computers
connected) in other words they are off the network, their traffic oesn't
go through a switch.

I didn't give this enough thought

the fact is I dont need to connect to the 0 address directly from the
windows machine. The 0 address is only for private network between the
database servers...

I was just curious that I couldn't ping them, I thought ping (and the
port scanner) should magically find them (like dns) ...

solution 1) configure a linux computer to do 'ip forwarding', and give
the windows machine a route like...

   C> route add 10.54.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 gw 10.54.7.2

or, solution 2) configure the router at 10.54.7.1 to have a route to
this other network.

if both networks are on the same hub/switch, then I can only ask... WHY?

Thanks for the insight,

Bob

Re: [CentOS] Basic Network question pinging different subnets

2007-11-16 Thread Bob Metelsky

Im a dba not a network guy... :)
Well ok I know there are technical "reasons" why this doesn't seem
to "work"

But - why can I ping any other ip address ie Google
64.233.167.99

Ok I guess thats "resolvable" and not private. My thinking is ping
should try and "find" the address

Maybe I need a type of local dns...(??) How does one avoid manually
adding "routes"

my port scanner - I give a range 10.54.0.0 - 10.54.7.55, Im thinking it
should try all addresses in between and it only gets the ones on 10.54.7.0

The comment below sounds like what I need... thanks!

"

c:\> route add 10.54.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 10.54.7.16

But this should give you access on both 10.54.0.2 and 10.54.0.3

"

C:\>route add 10.54.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 10.54.7.16

C:\>ping 10.54.0.2

Pinging 10.54.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.54.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.54.0.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

My purpose is to have a private network between database servers (oracle
rac) where only specific traffic is allowed, and it works that way, I
was just surprised that I want able to ping the 0 subnet.

So I need to add the route...

Thanks for everyones feedback. Hopefully I can contribute
something....in the future

;-)

Bob

Yes ! You have to learn how works IP networks :-)
IP is wild and wide :-)

you can try this on your windows :

c:\> route add 10.54.0.2 MASK 255.255.255.255 10.54.7.2

OR

do the same on your router at 10.54.7.1

OR (depend on how your linux box is configured)

c:\> route add 10.54.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 10.54.7.16

But this should give you access on both 10.54.0.2 and 10.54.0.3

OR if routing is enable on 10.54.7.2

c:\> route add 10.54.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 10.54.7.2

should also give you access to both 10.54.0.2 and 10.54.0.3

You just have to understand the first one other are just to spread out
my IP knowledges.
Ops, the last one is sometime useful to configure a device on another
IP range, without reconfiguring your IP.
Like when unpacking a new router with IP 192.168.123.1

Regards.

Thanks
Bob

[CentOS] Wits end! ndis got me - give me sanity with my wireless!!!

2007-10-26 Thread Bob Metelsky

All - desperate plea for help here.

Overview Centos 4.5 Kernel 2.6.9.55.0.9.EL with source dell Latitude 810

Im totally at my wits end... Ive tried like mad to get ndiswrapper to
work for my lynksys WPC54GS wireless card. No matter what I try ndis
gives some kind of error on installing the module after about a dozen
attempts 8 kernels, and 5 days- I finally GAVE UP!

unreal

So, I install the http://www.linuxant.com/company/ ever$ion (im not
above paying $20 to save me a few wasted days) this program dosnt have
a problem detecting the card, making the lights blink, I cane see the
access point using iwlist scan, I know precisely what the essid is, as
well as the encryption key, BUT now the stupid thing cant get an ip
form my dhcp server!!

Please help - some kind of sanity check, Im ready to jump out the
window!! ;)

Im up for ANY solution, I can install kernel source.. ndis bla... I just
need some thing that will work. At this point i have an incredibly low
opinion of the developers of ndis - that shouldn't not release such
stuff. Ive followed the dcs to the letter and either the kernal compile
puked... or ndis chokes on some flyshit in a function unreal!

Anyway I do have this working on the same laptop but I did it about a
year ago and cnat find the 1.37 version of ndis. At tthis point ndis is
just too picky

Anyone???

Thnaks
Bob
