Has anyone syggested using rsync instead of a Perl script?
That is designed just for things like this and works well
and might be more secure than the Perl script.

Or you could put use rsync in your Perl script.

You will need to create a little binary to invoke the Perl script.
Then create an rd.d type script that takes a 'start' and 'stop'
put it in and run it with a 'start' parameter. Give the startup
script a 'stop' when you want to quite.

Look at the stuff in init.d, etc such as apachectl for hints.
You probably don't need anything as elaborate as that for
the start/stop script, but it is a good example.

 Hi

Have a look in the scripts in /etc/init.d/, some of them can be little
bit complex, but worth the time to learn. You can start with
 /etc/init.d/atd.

Try

yum upgrade

Yum update rpmname

did you go talkto the proftpd user list ?

CentOS ships vsftpd, which has very good man pages and the example config
file already there would give you a good idea about what and how it does
 things.

It is, very much so. You haven't given us *any* idea as to what you,
personally, did to break the system. You say you halted it - did you mean
to turn the system off? If you'd just intended to restart it, you should
 have used the command reboot.

And were you running as root? Do you normally log in as root? If so, STOP
IT, NOW. This is *not* Windows, and you should *never* log in as root,
unless you're doing system maintenance. You should ALWAYS log in as
yourself, or as a user, *not* root. (Yes, I'm repeating myself: pay
 attention.)

 Btw, try RTFM.
