[CentOS] Where Did The Disk Go???
I'm running CentOS 5.9 x86_64 on a machine I built myself that has 6 SATA II hard drives (4 - 1 TB drives; 2 - 1.5 TB drives) all in several RAID-1 arrays. These arrays were created when I did the original installation with CentOS 5.1 and each created partition (both standard and LVM) were built raid 1. Due to some things happening around the house that required most of my attention, I saw some alerts concerning drive /dev/sdb but I didn't have time to address it and since I am running raid 1... One of the tings that happened was my home took a lightening strike and we were down for 4 days. When we got our electricity back and I brought the machine back up I noticed that there were only 5 drives listed and I wasn't getting any more alerts. What was /dev/sdb was no longer listed with any command (fdisk; cat /proc/mdstat; mdadm --list). I do have a spare drive and my questions are: Anyone know how I can find the serial number of the bad drive? Once replaced, what is the best way to get the partitions recreated? Re: [CentOS] qemu-kvm package?
Let me say that your question does not match your subject. I run a 32-bit CentOS with virt-manager installed to monitor the virtual machines running on a 64-bit CentOS. That leaves the following: Is it because I'm running CentOS 5.9 in both cases? Or is it because I performed a full install from a DVD in both cases? That being said, It's a fact that virt-manager will run on a 32-bit OS. Thanks, Gene Poole ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Re: [CentOS] What's The Odds?
Several reasons to rebuild the box: The software to be tested requires a physical server. This is our Sand Box machine, but over time 'we' have been using it as a repository for various things. We can't get another IP address for a VM this time of the year. So much easier to just stick our custom 'offline' build DVD and change the channel in the Satellite server. [CentOS] What's The Odds?
What's the odds of retaining the data in a software raid-1 array when falling back to CentOS 5.8 x86_64 from CentOS 6.3 x86_64? The array is made up of 2 - 1.5 TB hard disks. The original array was defined under CentOS 5.3 x86_64, then CentOS 6.1 x86_64 was installed and over time upgraded to CentOS 6.3. I need to back-level to test some software not certified for CentOS/RHEL 6. Thanks, Gene Poole ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] 75% - 80% Rebuild Complete
First I want to thank all of you who responded to me both on this list and in the CentOS wiki. Your responses helped greatly! I want to say that if you are running CentOS 5 and you do not have a overriding reason to go to CentOS 6, stay where you are. It was so much easier installing CentOS 6 on a new machine, migrating is next to impossible. Here's where I am today: 1. The base DVD install would not allow me to run the gnome desktop at 1920x1080 resolution with the default nVidia driver, the highest resolution I could obtain was 1024x768. However the text screen worked just fine after I introduced the video=1920x1080 in the grub.conf file. 2. When I installed the nVidia closed source drivers, the gnome desktop ran perfectly in the high resolution mode. The text mode then dropped to 1024x768 even though it retained the video=1920x1080 parameter (could it be those blacklist parameters introduced to disable the noveau drivers?). 3. During the installation I instituted software raid-1 along with LVM. It all worked perfectly until I got to the Boot Loader screen and instead of using the default (/dev/sda) I used what I thought would work in a raid-1 environment IF one of the hard drives went bad. I chose to install the boot loader in /dev/md0. Of course it would not boot. I recovered from this by going through the install and choosing to upgrade a existing installation and it allowed me to place the boot loader in /dev/sda. What that leaves me with is a raid-1 environment that works great as long as /dev/sda remains. How do I fix that??? 4. I still need to add all of those extra repositories (adobe; webmin; rpmfusion; etc). 5. I'm still trying to decide if I want a high resolution text screen (that I would use almost everyday) or a high resolution GUI screen (that I'll only use for certain application installs)??? At my 'real' job, we use RHEL and we've done some things using RHEL 6.2 for POC (Proof Of Concept) projects. With a POC, we install using a standard installation DVD (as opposed to using our RH Satellite Server). All of this to say that there are application installation options that really fit the needs of a server installation, you can choose 'Server' and 'Server GUI', which installs the gnome GUI without selecting a desktop environment.. Some things we run require a GUI to install (Oracle DB; IBM DB2 UDB; IBM WebSphere; etc.). How do I select this type of environment using CentOS 6.2? In other words, I'm running CentOS 6.2 x86_64 Desktop TIA, Gene Poole + It's impossible for everything to be true. + ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
[CentOS] Just Stuck
OK, I did the deal and I am in the process of upgrading/migrating from CentOS 5.8 x86_64 to CentOS 6.2 x86_64. But, I'm stuck with a gnome GUI that only sees 1024x768. Under CentOS 5.8 it saw 1920x1080 (without much work from me). The command I was used to , system-config-display, is gone and I've read that xrandr is the replacement. I can't find a usage document on this command. The basic description of the hardware involved is: nVidia GT 7300 video card Viewsonic 24" monitor I don't have the exact specs for this hardware, but I can post it later if needed. I've run the following command: xrandr -q And sometimes it returns a list of modes that range from 5 entries to 15 entries. Any help will be appreciated! [CentOS] CentOS 6, Raid 1, and LVM
I'm in the process of rebuilding one of my machines and I've been using Raid 1 with LVM on a CentOS 5 OS. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row to move to CentOS 6. However, I can't seem to locate and on the instructions/tutorials that show how to duplicate my Raid 1 LVM environment running CentOS 6. I saw the 'Partionable Raid 1 on CentOS 5 and 6', but it stopped before the LVM was introduced. Can I use those instructions, but add the LVM during the graphic installation? Is it true about some of the warning I've been reading about issues with this environment? [CentOS] Upgrade Question
We've got about 200 existing servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6 and all new servers are being provisioned using CentOS/RHEL 6.1. So that everything is consistent we need to upgrade the servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6. I've searched the CentOS wiki, the Red Hat site, and the internet looking for something official on upgrading/migrating from CentOS/RHEL 5.x to CentOS/RHEL 6.x. [CentOS] Network Situation
In my personal environment, I've got 7 machines running, with 4 of those machines running various flavors of Linux (CentOS 5 x86_64; Fedora 15 x86_64; Fedora 14 i686). Based upon some issues with the Fedora 15 x86_64 machine I'm considering dropping Fedora 15 in favor of CentOS 6.1. My questions are: On the networking side, has a there been a move to change the ethernet names from eth0 to em1? After install, can I change from NetworkManager to plain network? On my CentOS 5 machine I'm running VMware Server 2 and would like to move to KVM virtualization on the Fedora 15/CentOS 6.1 box. Is the level of KVM comparable between Fedora 15 and CentOS 6? If I install CentOS 6.0 and sometime later upgrade to CentOS 6.2, will the fact that I'm running software raid-1 on the /boot partition cause me grief? Will the fact that I'm running software raid-1 and LVM that was defined under Fedora 12 cause me grief? Are there any caveats moving from Fedora 15 to CentOS 6? Any advise? [CentOS] Virtual Machine Path Issue
All, I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 and I decided to install VMware Server 2.0.2 and all went without a hitch. I then created a Virtual Machine and used CentOS 5.4 x86_32 ISO image to build it. While I was customizing the built image, I attempted a 'find' command and received a message that the command could not be found. I checked root's path statement and found some strange entries (i.e. /usr/bini). Once I corrected those entries all seems to be working fine now. I don't have a physical platform to test the ISO on, so I must remain in the virtual arena. How can I tell if this is an error with the ISO or something going crazy during the VM build?
