FWIW I changed to 5.7, and had the same problems with Broadcom, which are detailed in previous threads, and I will not repeat. I tried several fixes, also mentioned in previous threads, and none worked. I must say, however, that I much prefer KDE 3 to KDE 4, so at least for now, I will stay with 5.7 . I got as far as: # modprobe wl FATAL: Error inserting wl (/lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686/extra/wl/wl.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) # dmesg wl: Unknown parameter `nohwcrypt' But I forgot the crypt library so I did: # modprobe -r b43 b43legacy ssb wl lib80211 # modprobe lib80211_crypt_tkip # modprobe wl FATAL: Error inserting wl (/lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686/extra/wl/wl.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) #dmesg ... lib80211_crypt: unregistered algorithm 'NULL' lib80211: common routines for IEEE802.11 drivers lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL' lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'TKIP' ... wl: Unknown parameter `nohwcrypt' I then googed around and did: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686/extra/wl/wl.ko nohwcrypt=1 and it did -1: Unknown Symbol. Since this error is known to be related to the crypt libraries, I redid them. It didn't help, but just for grins I tried: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686/extra/wl/wl.ko It retrurned no error. It seems that it got the nohwcrypt=1 once and doesn't want to see it again. I note that the hard drive partition is encrypted, in case this is relevant. [CentOS] CentOS 6, Broadcom, missing wlan0
This is a continuation of my previous thread: "Broadcom Wifi Problem" Following a post from "James A. Peltier", who said: You can use the rpmforge version or compile it yourself. I've used this one with success using the details described earlier. http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php I did however have to patch it with http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/5_100_82_38.patch the driver built and installed fine. In fact, I'm using it on my laptop as we speak. On my CentOS 6, with BCM4311 802.11b/g. I installed: hybrid-portsrc_x86_32-v5_100_82_38.tar.gz With NetworkManager shut off, I see: #lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\|wl" wl 2635904 0 lib802114858 1 wl and I try to start with: ifup wlan0 I put debug in the script, following into nested scripts, and see that it ultimately fails because: ip -o link fails to return wlan0 . I rechecked the MAC address, which is correct. Also ifconfig and iwconfig do not see wlan0 . Also, the wlan0 light on the box doesn't turn from red to green. If, however, I reenable b43, the light does turn green. Also, on this dual boot box, the WinXP partition runs WLAN0 with no problem. Thanks for your suggestions. [CentOS] Broadcom Wifi Problem
I have a Broadcom 802.11b/g hardware on my dual-boot laptop. Note first that in the WinXP partition, the wifi makes DHCP connections to my router with no problem. Since this was not working in my new CentOS 6 partition, and remembering that there was a driver problem with the old Fedora partition it replaced, I followed instructions founs at: http://repecka.net/en/2011/04/19/install-broadcom-bcm4311-802-11bg-wlan- drivers-on-centos/ and http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt modifying for that fact that I use wlan0 rather than eth1. The wifi is now dead-in-the-water. The wlan light now remains red, and neither ifconfig nor iwconfig show any sign of wlan0 (contra to the situation before I installed the new driver). It still works in the WinXP partition. Suggestions for my next step in fixing this would be most welcome. [CentOS] repeated local ephemeral to 80
On my CentOS box that I use mainly as a web server, I have iptables set to log and reject anything that I don't expect. So lately, I have getting things like this: Mar 29 17:27:20 mbrc20 kernel: IPT-DROP IN= OUT=lo SRC=192.168.9.20 DST=192.168.9.20 LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=46910 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=56624 DPT=80 WINDOW=32792 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 OPT (0204400C0402080A4A26F7A501030307) UID=0 that on at least one occasion repeated for every few seconds for more than three hours. The ephemeral source port keeps changing in an irregular manner. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] top and allocation issues
In a context where exceptions are caught, I ran the fragment: cerr << "allocating" << endl; char*arr[100]; for (int jj = 0; jj < 10; ++jj) { cerr << "jj = " << jj << endl; arr[jj] = new char[20]; sleep (30); } sleep (10); for (int jj = 0; jj < 10; ++jj) delete[] arr[jj]; cerr << "deleted" << endl; The exception was caught with jj = 1, i.e., on the second allocation. But on top, I see: top - 14:08:46 up 5:21, 10 users, load average: 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 Tasks: 158 total, 1 running, 157 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 2.7%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 94.5%id, 0.6%wa, 0.1%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1941908k total, 1231804k used, 710104k free, 138372k buffers Swap: 3899384k total,0k used, 3899384k free, 876020k cached and the "710104k free" suggests that I should have failed on the first allocation. I have a C++ program that opens, gets a little data from, and closes about 5000 files. Now if I run the program when I first boot up, the running time is from about 10 seconds to a minute. I found that send also sometimes crashes it. Sorry for the misleading comment. Mike. ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
[CentOS] socket: write vs send
On CentOS 5.4, Linux 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Nov 3 16:18:27 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux In man 2 send I find: The send() call may be used only when the socket is in a connected state (so that the intended recipient is known). The only difference between send() and write() is the presence of flags. With zero flags parameter,send()isequivalent to write(). In some complex server software, if the client disconnects: send: delivers errno == ECONNRESET but write: crashes the server process. So it is not really equivalent. Any thoughts on this?
