[CentOS] Incorrect evince password request

2011-12-07 Thread Reynolds McClatchey
I have run into several pdf documents that request a password
with evince; but not with Adobe.

[rey@reylinux docs]$ rpm -qa |grep evince
evince-0.6.0-13.el5
[rey@reylinux docs]$ evince Mir*
Error: Unsupported version/revision (4/4) of Standard security handler
Error: Incorrect password

Any workaround or do I just need to use adobe on WinXP?

[CentOS] Are file system mounts costly?

2011-08-03 Thread Reynolds McClatchey
I recall a kernel parameter on Unix System V of number
of mounted file systems. Max recommended was 8.
Larger numbers slowed down inode location and
 impacted performance.

Has Linux solved that bottleneck? Are 20 or 30 mounted
efs and cifs file systems on one system OK?

[CentOS] INN removed from CentOS 6

2011-04-27 Thread Reynolds McClatchey
I use inn to make internal company announcements and
 discussions available to remote offices.
I note inn is removed form RHEL 6. What replaces inn?

http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Technical_Notes/apc.html

Will inn be available from elsewhere? Will I have to compile
 it?

Should I modify my scripts to create and install html files
for a web server? That would make article deletion, archiving,
and maintenance more difficult than it is with the inn
 nntp server.

Is there some forum type package that would be better
 than the inn system?

Re: [CentOS] glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2.i686 broken?

2011-04-20 Thread Reynolds McClatchey
Many thanks for the rpm's. I had some evolution stored
documents that I really needed. I've applied them to
two systems.

Is it possible that the gnome panel problem is only on CRT's and
not LEDs? Seems like one of my systems fixed itself when
I changed monitors.

Re: [CentOS] Thin client system for X applications?

My HP 5725 has XDM connection available in the connection manager.
Works well to my CentOS 5.5 x64 server.

Re: [CentOS] Building an instant on X terminal

2010-04-15 Thread Reynolds McClatchey

Huh. A small version of Debian Etch. Boots (once POST has complted)
 in under 25 seconds.

Hmm, old versions of software, and apt-get upgrade causes the system
to die (root disk filled out) but definitely a possibility.

I believe Synaptic is installed. I did not upgrade but used Synaptic to
install
the packages I needed but not included - lpd, xpdf. I found an Etch repo
somewhere.

I ran out of flash at some point. I needed serial printers for a plant label
printer and could never get the RS232 printer working.

We have 10 or so HP thin clients and fragility of the flash data has not
been an issue.
Instant on is not an issue and I missed that in your original note.

Good Luck.
