Re: [CentOS] Video Card [SOLVED]
A recap of the problems for my configuration: Centos 5.2, x86_64, PNY 9600 GT 512 Mb video, Rosewill R913J 19" LCD monitor, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo, Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 Gb RAM. Using the latest Nvidia x86_64 driver package (177.82) I could not get the 1280x1060 resolution (I could get nothing but 640x480). Additionally, while attempting various fixes, the monitor base color turned blue. Cure: 0. I set run level 3 in /etc/inittab and then executed 'telinit 3' to work from a text display. 1. I set the Rosewill in VGA (analog) mode--that is the only mode that will work with the Nvidia driver (discovered by trial and error). 2. I deleted the existing xorg.conf file (at /etc/X11). 3. I used nvidia-xconfig to write a new xorg.conf file. 4. I initially tested with startx, but that didn't work with my set up. I found that using "gdm" let me see a successful X server. 5. After a successful X start at the desired resolution, I then set run level 5 and executed 'telinit 5'. Weird monitor base color: 6. To reset the monitor base color back to normal I had to clear the BIOS CMOS memory and reload the BIOS defaults. Note that the Nvidia list of Linux-capable video cards at <http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html> (thanks to John Stanley) is the one to consult to ensure a card is usable under Linux. I have found no card manufacturers with any significant degree of tech support for Linux, so I cannot recommend one over the other (over the years I have tried cards from MSI, XFX, EVGA, PNY, and others, but it was always hit or miss--I usually looked at the READMEs with the Nvidia driver packages but that has proved to be unreliable for me--once more, thanks to John Stanley for pointing out the other list that I have always overlooked). I hope this helps others with weird video problems. -Tom Tom Browder Niceville, Florida USA ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Thanks, Mark, but the mode line was there. Apparently there are two problems (I finally got a clue in the xorg log file): 1. The R913J (not R943J) digital mode seems not to be compatible with the Nvidia drivers for some reason. 2. I was using startx to test as I was used to doing in the old days. The log file mentioned lost contact with gdm so I entered "gdm" instead of "startx" and got the desired resolution! Now I have another problem: somehow in my putzing around the monitor has taken on a blue hue both in the startup vga mode and the full-up Nvidia X mode. Any ideas about that? I haven't done a hard reboot yet and hope that clears it up--but I'm putting that off until tomorrow morning. Today I bought a PNY 9600 GT, installed the latest NVIDIA 64-bit drivers (177.82) and I still can't get anything but the 640x480 display. BTW, my display is a Rosewill R943J LCD (without EDID). And I'm using its DVI connector. Any ideas? I'm going to try the analog connector now just for fun: no change. Any suggestions for an equivalent ATI (AMD) card that is known to work? In any event, I can't make the 9500 GT work so I'm returning it to NewEgg and getting another one that shows up on ALL the Nvidia lists: (1) Linux-capable, (2) CUDA-enabled, and (3) the README for the latest driver package. -Tom ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Also the 6300 is not listed either. John, thanks. I wasn't aware of that page. Nvidia confuses the issue when it lists support with the latest package run installation. It states that it supports the 9500 GT. What gives? > AFAIK all cards listed on that page using the nvidia drivers will work. [CentOS] Video Card
I want to be able to use a late-model video card with either Nvidia or ATI (AMD) chips that have the capability to use the GPU for numeric processing through the CUDA or AMD Stream SDKs. I can't find any good source for hardware that really works under Linux, not to speak of Centos. I need a specific model and brand that a user has successfully been able to use the proprietary driver for under Linux. I have tried EVGA Nvidia 9500 GT with no luck. I have also tried XFX 6300 XT (not CUDA-capable) and cannot make it work under Centos, either I am using Centos 5.2, x86_64 on a Gigabyte mobo with Intel Core 2 Duo. [CentOS] Login Feature
I asked one of my team mates to evaluate centos 5.2 as a more stable distro for our business use than Fedora which we have used for years. His main objection so far has been the lack of a neat feature of recent Fedoras (at least since 7) that allows a user to login as himself if the screen is locked by another user (a switch user feature). Is that feature available or is it planned? Thanks. -Tom Tom Browder Niceville, Florida USA ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] Centos 5.1
I'm about to try Centos 5 (first time user). Question: I have the 5.0 CD-ROMs, so can I install with them and them update to 5.1 via the internet, or should I use the 5.1 CDs? [CentOS] Centos 5 - Install Hangup
I get to where the installation begins copying packages to the new host and it's time to change CD's to the second one. I get the following message: An error occurred unmounting the CD... make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2...click Ok to retry. I click and nothing changes. I go to tty2 and see the #ssh prompt and see nothing interfering (and the umount command doesn't work under the shell). I've tried this three times and can't get past this point. It may be a hardware problem, but other things work on the same system under Fedora 7. BTW, old AMD dual CPU, Gigabyte server MOBO, 1.5 Gb RAM, WD IDE drive, generic IDE CD-RW. ATI Raden graphics card. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Tom Tom Browder Niceville, Florida USA ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
