According to the Red Hat RHEL7 Networking Guide you can't bridge
wireless interfaces. IIRC there's a reason mentioned in that guide and
here's another one (answer 1):

https://superuser.com/questions/597834/bridging-wifi-to-ethernet-on-ubuntu-not-working

However there's a debian wiki entry that says it's possible using ebtables:

https://wiki.debian.org/BridgeNetworkConnections#Bridging_with_a_wireless_NIC

+1
Alexander is correct.
It is not possible to bridge a wireless network to a wired network and have
it function properly.

You can NAT MASQUERADE though. (And that's probably your [only?] other
alternative.)

How did you come to this conclusion? Based on which reading?

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Networking_Guide/

You cannot do what you want

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Networking_Guide/ch-Configure_Network_Bridging.html

"Note that a bridge cannot be established over Wi-Fi networks operating

[CentOS] wireless inteface configure as bridge

2014-07-27 Thread Benjamin Fernandis
Hi,

I m using centos 7 in laptop and kvm as virtualization to run windows guest
vm.Currently i m using NAT as default setting for guest vm, my internet is
fine but can't resolve some domains and sites.

So want to come on bridge.

As per my understanding bridge can not work while device is managed by
NetworkManager.

Is there any utility or tool to use to scan wireless device in network and
connect them as i want to stop to use Networkmanager to use laptop wireless
interface as bridge for my guest vm.

Thx

I didnt solve the problem because it is still there. However I managed to
get around it.

I downloaded WICD Network Manager and Installed it, then chkconfig
NetworkManager off and I have no more disconnects.

I found that there is a

the reason 11 is:

Hello Xianyi,

Can you post the output of

$ lspci -nn | grep Atheros

$ lspci -nn | grep Atheros
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285
Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01)

My bad, the card that I'm using is AR9285, I will file a bug report at
ELRepo to see if they can create the package that is required for the
drivers.

Another option you can try is to install Kernel-ml [0] or kernel-lt [1]
as the driver is supported in either of these kernel.

[0] http://elrepo.org/tiki/kernel-ml
[1] http://elrepo.org/tiki/kernel-lt

I forgot to ask, did you try sudo modprobe ath9k?

Thank you Earl.

It is CentOS 6.4 I have installed. And my kernel is 2.6.32 now. However,
after finding some information about ath9k driver, it seems like elrepo
currently does not support ath9k in CentOS 6.4.

Can you tell me how did you fix that?

You can try the drivers from ELRepo [0], did you install CentOS 6.4? The
latest kernel is 2.6.32.

I'm using the same drivers on my laptop and the package that I installed

It is tough to say X device is ok because vendors ignorantly change the
chipsets they use and still give devices the same model name/number (and if
we're lucky changing the version number...).

As Justin top-posted ;)
RTL8187 works well. As do RT2500-based wireless chips. Even some Zydas
chips (zd1211rw - I believe Backtrack had a patched driver for
injection) aren't all that bad (Atheros bought them [0] a while back).

Buffalo AirStation WirelessG (U2KG54) USB dongles have an RT2500 chip in
them.

Try service NetworkManager restart, and see how that goes. Or try
"disconnect" for wireless and connect again.
Also, do you have wpa security? Maybe downgrade wpasupplicant (or what
ever actual package is in charge)?

Replying to my own post, I forgot to mention I have tried several USB
wireless adapters on both boxes with same results as onboard adapter,
booted previous 2.6.32-279 kernel instead of 2.6.32-358 and disabled
Network Manager with no change in behavior.

[CentOS] Wireless cannot ping gateway after 6.3 CR updates

2013-03-06 Thread b.j. mcclure
I'm having a wireless connection issue with an HP laptop and a Zotac
media server after the 6.4 package updates from CR repository. Nothing
changed with wireless config as far as I can tell. Both have been
working fine with previous releases of 6.x.

Oddly, if a cat 5 cable is connected for a few seconds and then
disconnected the wireless works fine and survives a 'service network
restart' but does not survive a reboot. A laptop running Ubuntu 12.04
continues to connect normally.

The boxes in question appear to connect to the router/accesspoint, are
assigned correct static IPs, but cannot ping any box on the intranet
including the router. No other boxes on the intranet can ping the hp or
zotac, Once a network cable is inserted and removed all is well with
that box. The zotac box uses the ath9k wireless driver, the HP uses b43.
Same result using DHCP instead of static IP.

Output of iwconfig appears normal on both errant boxes and does not
change from non-working to working state.

Google has not been much help. FWIW, here is output of iwconfig and
ifconfig.

~]$ ifconfig

2011-11-08 Thread Johan Vermeulen
Dear All,

thanks for the reactions!

Looks like I somehow fuzzled up when compiling the driver, because with
Ljubomir 's driver, I can now see available networks.

I woun't be able to test if I can actualy connect until later today or
tomorrow.

Ljubomir, so far looks like you solved this!

greetings, James

Actually, that was me testing the driver (over and over again for the
past 6 months)... Sadly, ever since Broadcom released version
5.100.82.38 of the driver (December 2010), no solid evidence has been
provided to prove this driver working on RHEL/CentOS 5 to this day - not
even after the latest release (Oct 25th, 2011).

The whole issue with the driver can be tracked at the ELRepo bug tracker:
http://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=193

As for the original poster is concerned, the only advice I can give, is
to download an older driver version from:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/b/broadcom-sta/broadcom-sta_5.60.48.36.orig.tar.gz
or
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/b/broadcom-sta/broadcom-sta_5.10.91.9.3.orig.tar.gz

and attempt compiling it using the Wiki manual
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom, since ELRepo
.src.rpm for rebuilding the kernel independent ABI driver has been
provided just a couple of months ago, for a driver which arguably never
worked (for me and quite a few other people out there).
So, following the manual step by step should get you there, Johan. Also,
make sure you use NetworkManager instead of network service with your
WiFi - if the driver turns out to be working, this will save you some
time and nervs.

For me, best solution is to swap Broadcom for Atheros radio and forget

I _think_ when one of the elrepo folks tried the latest Broadcom driver
source a week or two ago, the driver stopped working for him. No idea if
this was el5 or el6, but not a good sign. Apparently it's not that uncommon.

My recommendation is that if you can find a driver version that works
for you, hang on to it!

I have no idea if Broadcom keep older version sources available or not.
If they would relax their draconian redistribution policies we could do
a half way decent job of supporting their drivers, but currently that's
not the case.

Sorry, run "iwlist wlan0 ap"

Also helpfull are:

ifconfig
ip address

Look in their manuals to se how to use them.

 > after reboot I now see a cabeled network ( wlan0) ( disconnected) and an
 > " Auto wlan0 marked as available

It is strange that Wireless interface is marked cabled. But I do not
have ANY experience with Broadcom radios. All I use are Atheros radios.

Try creating "Connect to Hidden Network" connection (or whatever the
actual text is) in NetworkManager GUI. You must see be able to set ESSID
at other configs. If you do not have it, then something is wrong.

You can also try using the kmod-wl package that I compiled per elrepo
instructions:
http://rpms.plnet.rs/plnet-centos6-x86_64/RPMS.plnet-compiled/kmod-wl-5_100_82_38-3.el6.el6.x86_64.rpm

Maybe this makes a difference, but notice that I never tested it.

If I fail to help you, you will always be able to report a bug:

http://elrepo.org/bugs/main_page.php

,so your problems can be investigated.

This is good choice many of us recommend as best solution.

Question: This is CentOS 6? i386 or x86_64?

What does "iwlist" command give you?

Have you installed all other packages needed for wireless?

Add this:

Why is BOOTPROTO disabled?

Do not worry about it, most native speaking English don't bother to
write correctly.

[CentOS] Fwd: centos Wireless - Broadcom BCM4313

2011-11-07 Thread Johan Vermeulen
Dear All,

I'm trying to configure wireless card on a Dell Vostro 1540.

I had a look at this site :
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom?action=show

wireless card :# /sbin/lspci | grep Broadcom
12:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless
LAN Controller (rev 01)

I decided to follow the ELrepo instructions suggested on the site :

   http://elrepo.org/tiki/wl-kmod

because it would give me a clear and present rpm that I can use on different
machines and that will survive kernel updates.

This all goes down without error messages.

After installing, there is a new entry in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules :

# PCI device 0x14e4:0x4727 (wl)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="94:39:e5:dc:3a:cf", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"

and there is now a blacklist-Broadcom.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/:

blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist ssb

So I think the driver works and the blacklist - issue that is reported on
different sites is ok.

I then made an entry in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts:

vi ifcfg-eth1

DEVICE="eth1"
#BOOTPROTO="dhcp"
HWADDR="94:39:e5:dc:3a:cf"
NM_CONTROLLED="yes"
ONBOOT="yes"
TYPE=Wireless

*The problem is* I'm not seeing any wireless networks.

Eth1 seems to try to get an adress via dhcp and then exits.

And it is listed in the gui as wired network...

[root@wduerloo ~]# dmesg | tail -n15

[CentOS] Wireless Problem - no longer able to connect

2011-08-14 Thread Mark Weaver
Hi all,

When I first loaded C6 on my Dell Inspiron laptop the wireless worked
flawlessly right out of the box. At the time the wireless access point
was a Linksys WAP54G using WPA-2 Personal. In the last two weeks that
Access point has been replaced with a Linksys WAP610N, also using WPA-2
Peronal. The problem I'm having is the wireless adapter sees the new WAP
just fine, but is unable to connect.

I was wondering if there were any control files hidden somewhere that
were holding old information from the former WAP that are hindering the
connection to the new WAP.

thanks,

Thanks for the tip. While searching for a solution, I also read about
wicd (http://wicd.sourceforge.net/) which can help, but will try
wpa_supplicant first since its a part of the distro.

Re: [CentOS] Wireless Interface Does Not Connect Automatically At StartUp

2011-07-18 Thread Cody Jackson
Hi Manish;

I've never tried NM during boot. (Personally, I dislike NM at all.)
You might find a system similar to this to be more of your liking:

http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/WpaSupplicant

I use this in place of my CentOS 6 backup server, which has an
rt2500pci card in it--which, by the way, is a horrible shoddy card
that I do not recommend. It doesn't play nice with Netgear APs. But I
digress.

CentOS 6 appears to have made some changes to the above document. What
I've discovered is:

1. You don't need to edit ifup-wireless.
2. You don't need to edit ifconfig-* (although one should be
created--I can post mine if it'll help you.)
3. All you need in /etc/rc.local is an 'ifup wlan0' line.
4. You DO need to edit /etc/sysconfig/wpa_supplicant and add the
interface of your wireless card to the options there (example:
-iwlan0).
5. wpa_supplicant should be ENABLED on boot.

I also found out that I actually have editing rights on that page, so
I'll post my experiences in the next day or so. I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Cody Jackson

[CentOS] Wireless Interface Does Not Connect Automatically At StartUp

2011-07-18 Thread Manish Kathuria
I have recently installed CentOS 6 on a system with a Realtek 8180L
wireless card. The wireless card is detected properly and uses the
rtl8180 driver. But it connects to our wireless network only after
logging to the Desktop Environment (GNOME) and using the Network
Manager Applet. In order to make the wireless card connect to the
network automatically at system start up, I edited the Connection
using the Network Manager Applet and checked "Connect Automatically"
and "Available to all users" options. However, while booting the
system, the following error message is displayed when the wireless
network interface is brought up.

Device does not seem to be present, delaying initialization

But as soon as a user logs on to the Desktop, he can connect to the
network using the NM Applet.

I have also toggled between using DHCP and Static IP Address for the
the wireless card but it makes no difference. The SSID is not being
broadcast and the Wireless Access Point / Router uses WPA-PSK.

TIA,

[CentOS] wireless

2010-10-19 Thread David
Hi folks

I have a CentOS box with 2 network cards. One is eth0 and the other is wlan0
(Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi card)

I use wlan0 to stay linked with other workstations in an small network and eth0
just in case I need to get wired to solve some problem. eth0 is always unpluged
while things are going ok.

Te problem is everytime my AP is turned off for whatever reason or the link is
down, no matter the AP is working again, my wlan0 stays without link. Then I
have to reboot to get wireless linked again. I'm not running Network Manager,
For some reason, everytime I tried to start it, it just mess my network, trying
to make wlan0 to get an IP from a DHCP server, no matter wlan0 have it's own IP
address specified in ifcfg-wlan0.
The Centos Box is unattended and everytime it happens I have to go to the other
room and press the on/off button to restart it. (no display, keyboard or mouse
in it)
Any advices? How could I make NetworkManager to just link it again and not
start messing with my network configuration?

Cheers

You need to download and install the firmware. You might need to
extract the firmware from the MS-Windows installer CD (somehow).

[CentOS] Wireless problem

Hi folks

I just installed Centos 5.5. I heard about the new changes in wifi support. I

Try find-out SPEC file and rpm source, recompile it, this is the faster way I
think, if you have big issue.

No, I hadn't. I'm just a tad surprised - that was rated "important", and
looked as though it would be released soon. And with 6 coming soon, I was
thinking, though I haven't gone to look, that they'd have 3.1 or 4.x.

[CentOS] Wireless Made Easy (for Home Desktops)

2010-03-02 Thread Ron Blizzard
For those of you who use a wireless router and may work on one or two
(or even several) machines in your computer room, an AP Client is a
nice solution. When you move to another machine you can just move the
wireless net adapter to the new machine and you're up and running on
the network immediately. I've been using a D-Link G730AP for a while
-- but it's not really made for this -- it's a pocket adapter meant to
carry with you laptop. And, unlike my old Asus WL-330, it won't hook
up to a switch.

Asus also makes a more powerful, larger, wireless
AP/Client/Bridge/Reapeater, the WL-320gE. I bought two of these on
eBay and they work great as Clients (network adapters) or "Stations"
in Asus talk. They have a range of 850 meters (as compared to the
pocket AP's range of 40 meters) so, in my room, I've got the full
speed of my Cable wirelessly. It's three to four times faster than the
D-Link G730AP, and it's solid (the D-Link was iffy). But, more
importantly, I can hook it up to a wired (standard) switch and have as
many simultaneous network connections as ports in the switch (in this
case, four -- but I only use two). I've also set one up in the back of
the house with a switch for my son's computers -- through several
walls they're still getting very fast service. This is the only way
I've used this device, but a lot of people buy them as repeaters. (I
could mine up a repeater/client and my kids would have an even
stronger single, but it's not necessary.) Another feature of Asus is
that you can use it simultaneously as a bridge and as a wired client.
It works well, the documentation is a bit inadequate, but it doesn't
take long to "translate."

Anyhow, I've rambled again. The reason I bring this up is that these
things are currently selling for $25 on eBay -- which is about the
cost of mid-range USB adapter. The seller has nearly 800 of them. (I
have no relationship with the seller, except I'm a customer.)

The eBay link is at http://tinyurl.com/ykysncw

As suspected, grepping modules.alias shows that Vendor:Device ID to
match rtl8187.ko:

grep 0846 /lib/modules/2.6.18-164.6.1.el5/modules.alias | grep -i 6a00
alias usb:v0846p6A00d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* rtl8187

so try loading the module:

modprobe rtl8187

if it's not already loaded.

What shows up in /var/log/messages when you plug in the device? Do a
'sudo tail -f /var/log/messages' and then plug in the device. Copy and
paste the usb / udev blather into an E-Mail message. Should start with

Your firs need is to make sure that you can get any kind of connection using

printer until I was sure that I knew it works elsewhere - too many unknowns.

my $200 brother laser MFC gets 2-3 cases of copier paper out of a $50
toner cartridge. the paper is about $25/case (2000 sheets) so that
brings it to about $100 per 4000 pages, or about $0.025/page. every
1 pages or so I need to replace the drum, thats like $60 more, I
think, so that brings it to $0.031/page total.

They may not clog, but they do dry out after a while. I have a HP fax machine
that uses a black inkjet cartridge and while I don't receive very many faxes I
find that I have to replace my cartridge once in a while because it dries
out and stops working. It still reads 50-75% full, but it doesn't print.

In hindsight I should probably have sprung for a laser fax machine but it would
have cost about twice as much as I paid for this inkjet. But toner doesn't dry
out so I would have been ahead by now, I think

One good thing about the HP splatjets is that they are designed so they
don't clog after long periods of inactivity. I have an HP Photosmart 7350
that only is used when I want to print color. My only real complaint with
this printer is that HP no longer provides software for in for OS X Leopard
or Snow Leopard, and the generic gutenprint stuff doesn't do nearly as well
with different paper types and such that the HP software does.

We use an HP 4M Plus with duplex for pretty much everything else. This was
bought new in November 1995, and has been a true work horse. I spent about
$200 last year to get it serviced, replacing all the rollers and such
figuring that we couldn't get a better printer for the money.

get an ethernet printer, sheesh.

I have a Brother MFC7345N (Costco version of the 7340 with an ethernet
interface) on my home LAN, is a B&W Laser, color scanner, copier, fax,
both flatbed and sheet feed scanning/faxing/copying. does copy and fax
without any host software involvement (too many cheap all-in-ones rely
on a software utilities to do the copy/fax functionality). has 100baseT
ethernet. Supports LPR/LPD protocols so Linux should be able to print
to it just fine. Says the scanner supports Linux SANE protocol (I know
nothing about this, never tried that part). We originally bought this
$200 printer strictly to use as a fax machine, and after setting it up
and playing with it, shut off our HP LJ1300 printer and use it for all
our home printing.

I would not use a inkjet as a primary home printer, the supplies are too
costly, and if they are used sporadically, you waste 2/3rds of the ink
unclogging them. also inkjets require extra smooth extra heavy paper or
they look like crap, while a laser can print on any old cheap copier
paper. I have a techwriter wife and two school kids, so we do a LOT of
printing at my place.

I have myself a ipw3945 in my thinkpad r60 .. of course the ipw3945d
daemon has to be launched but i've had strange issues with
NetworkManager (current version). It seems that upgrading the

I also hope that NetworkManager 0.7 (which is foreseen for el 5.3) will
solve a lot of problems ... let's see

/etc/sysconfig/hwconf is the file kudzu creates when of all detected
hardware at startup and it related this hardware with drivers in the
kernel

but certain drivers are modules in the kernel, wich need to be loaded
manually or later when the system is already running

this can be done by method 1 explained here above or adding them in
/etc/modprobe.conf which makes it load the modules at startup

you will need to add the line (if it is not yet there) :

alias wlan0 prism54

you can check whether the module is loaded with : /sbin/lsmod | grep
prism54

Think I already did that, but I'll do it again to be sure and reboot between.

Trying to learn wifi netwroking with linux, and CentOS v5.2 in particular.
Following the above howto helped a bit on the way, but I'm nowhere near getting
the wifi-card to connect.

I've installed madwifi, ndiswrapper, dkms and whatnot in order to get this
working, but still it's a no go. Centos does see the card in
Administration/Network and the wireless network thing is visible in Network
manager, but when I try connect or create a new connection to my wlan it just
times out or says it couldn't connect for some reason. The wlan I'm trying to
connect to is WPA2-PSK using AES.

I'm using a 3Com 3CRWE154G72 IIRC, which according to the hwconf's using the
prism54 driver/firmware/whatever.

Would I maybe be better off reinstalling the whole shebang and have the
wifi-card inserted from start in order for the centos installer to see it
properly from the beginning?

The experimental machine I use is not critical in any way. Only gotcha' is that
it only has a CD-drive so I have to shuffle discs should I do a complete
reinstall. 8-)

Thx in advance for any advice.

Just one comment here. Depending on the hardware, the ipw3945 module
may or may not work. I tried this module on a Toshiba laptop
(3945ABG) and could not get it to work. So, I went for the *iwl3945*
module which is enabled in the centosplus kernel (but not in the
distro kernel). This one worked just fine. [On a side note, iwl4965
is enabled in the distro kernel.]

If I read correctly what is on the intel site, *ipw* is being
deprecated. Perhaps, we should ask dag to dkms'ize the iwl3945
module. By the way, ATrpms mentioned by KB seems to have the kmdl
version.

The instructions on this page worked on a laptop with 3945ABG:

http://www.distrostop.org/forums/index.php/topic,5694.0.html

Note that you will need the centosplus kernel.

I have the 3945 and use dkms drivers from rpmforge. No kernel mods needed.

Install dkms from rpmforge:

dkms-2.0.20.2-2.el5.rf.noarch.rpm

and get the 3945 rpms there too:

ipw3945-firmware-1.14.2-1.nodist.rf.noarch.rpm
ipw3945d-1.7.22-4.nodist.rf.i386.rpm

After installing things tend to just work. Here is my modprobe.conf lines:

alias eth1 ipw3945
install ipw3945 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ipw3945 ; sleep 0.5 ;
/sbin/ipw3945d --quiet
remove ipw3945 /sbin/ipw3945d --kill ;/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove
ipw3945

Don't know what that means, but.

I thought you were just asking how to get the system connected to the
net so you could get the drivers, thus my earlier recommendation on the
WET11..

ndiswrapper is ok if there is no native support for the wifi card
which isn't the case with the 3945 but it does seem to be working
so...

Have you installed NetworkManager which should cope with the WEP encryption?

yum install NetworkManager\*
service NetworkManager start
service NetworkManagerDispatcher start
chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManager on
chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManagerDispatcher on

if you reboot or restart X + service network restart
then you should have a wee icon on your desktop that you can click on
and enter your WEP key.

Personally i would get rid of ndiswrapper and use the dkms-ipw3945
package from Dag's repo.
I never had consistent wifi access (with a broadcom card) using
ndiswrapper and have had total stability using the bcm43xx/b43 in
fedora 8 so would always go with the "non-hack" method. Intel seem to
have particularly progressive in terms of opening up their FOSS
support.

[CentOS] Wireless PCMCIA/PC Card for CentOS 5.1?

2008-01-22 Thread Sysadmin
Hello everyone,

I would really like to get wireless working on my CentOS 5.1 install. I have
a LinkSys WPC54G (I guess version 1 since no version is listed) but
everything I've read indicates that this would be a nightmare for a Linux
newbie like myself. I got as far as NDISWrapper, but right off the bat I am
getting issues with KBuild and I guess my kernel source so I can't even get
as far as compiling NDISWrapper.

My question is mainly: Can anyone recommend a PC Card for a laptop that will
work on CentOS without NDISWrapper? If not, is there an idiot guide for
installing NDISWrapper on Centos?

Thanks and best wishes,

Manuel Alvarez

Seems that way.

First, lemme tell you I use that same card, so I'm directly affected
by it.

This kind of thing takes away too much energy that could be used to
benefit a higher percentage of the users. The number of users that
have that card is very small.

This kind of situation where you have to deal with legal issues can
be very time consuming on a linux distro. Do, as a distro maintainer,
you don't WANT to deal with it, unless you _really_ need to. Even
things that are relatively harmless (like this particular license) can
give you a lot of headaches.

No, I'm not a CentOS maintainer. But I've worked on distro teams before.

Hope I've made myself clear now.

I said we don't WANT do distribute it.

My apologies. Guess I just assumed, silly me, that if it was not
prohibited and it would make wireless a bit easier for those who use it,
that would be a good thing. I probably do not understand the issue.

yum has no provision to make you accept an EULA prior to
downloading. As I see it, that alone is a showstopper.

I just read the entire document as well as Exhibit A. I do not find any
prohibition against distribution, only conditions which should be met if
it is distributed to end users. Would you be kind enough to point out
the section or paragraph which you interpret to prohibit distribution.

U. The drivers are free, they are licensed under the GPL v2. The
firmware is the problem:

want to distribute that (we seem to be allowed to do so under certain
conditions, but my legalese sucks, especially the english dialect of

Well, it's just a firmware download away, normally.

UMMM ... that would be because the people who made the card made it to
work on Windows ... they did not make it to work on Linux. They don't
provide technical specs or free software drivers so some poor smuck sets
in a room and reverse engineers a driver for it.

Obviously a reverse engineered driver is not the same as a hardware
driver programed by the manufacturer.

Red Hat has ipw2200 and ipw2100 drivers that are not free and have no
SOURCE ... but if you are a paying client you can to get them. Those
drivers and firmware are not free or re-distributable by CentOS.

If running your wireless on Linux is important to you, complain to the
laptop manufacturer so that they will put in devices that support linux
properly out of the box.

[CentOS] Wireless newtworking in CentOS 5

2007-07-13 Thread Andrew Allen
Installed CentOS 5 on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, hoping that it will
be easier to set up wireless networking than it was in CentOS 4.4. But
still so difficult to get it working, mainly because there doesn't
appear to be a driver pre-installed for this wireless card ((Dell
wireless 1390 Mini PCI network card 802.11b/g). Do I still have to use
ipw2200 and what is this anyway? - I really don't understand why it is
so difficult to get wireless networking in CentOS 5 when it works like a
dream in Windows XP (I have a dual boot system, but I'd much rather use
linux!).
I've tried modprobe ipw2200 and all the rest of it with no success -
what am I doing wrong please?

Thanks,
Andy

Had we any good wireless stuff then? When was RHEL4? There was quite a

I'm googling and haven't yet found anything good and am hoping someone
