[CentOS] php 5.2

2009-03-15 Thread Melinda Odom
Hi,

I am running centos 5 with php 5.1.6-20 and mysql 5.0.45-7.el5 on a
production server running a lot of ecommerce stores.

The future next versions of these stores all are requiring php 5.2 at
least. I don't want any problems with the ecommerce stores I have now
with php 5.1.6-20 so don't know what to do.

With the next version of one store I will need php 5.2 plus MySQLi
extension. Another store version I will need only php 5.2.

I found several posts last night about php 5.2 never being in centos 5
because redhat wouldn't support centos.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Melinda Odom

[CentOS] PHP 5.2

2007-07-12 Thread John Thomas
To me, there seems to be growing support to requiring PHP 5.2 within the
next year, see http://www.gophp5.org/ . Does anyone know of plans to
release PHP 5.2 RPMS in any of the major repos?

[CentOS] php 5.2

2007-09-10 Thread Melinda Odom
Hi,

I was asking about php 5.2 because I would like to use this program with
these requirements:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/system-requirements

This ecommerce store is built with the zend framework and requires php 5.2.
Mcrypt is not in the centos mirrors either.

I did manage to get this beta ecommerce store installed on php 5.1.6-12 by
removing the mycript line in the install xml file and also changing the
initial install page code to not be less than 5.1 I wouldn't think this
would be good to do for a production program.

I would prefer to stay with the centos mirror as this is what I have setup.

Hopefully centos will have php 5.2 in the future.

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Melinda Odom

The PHP development team is proud to announce the immediate release of PHP
5.2.0. This release is a major improvement in the 5.X series, which includes
a large number of new features, bug fixes and security enhancements.

You can download it on its website: http://www.php.net/downloads.php
and compile it by source code

Hi Majian,

Thanks for the info but my post is about the webstack packages for centos

repo soon.

The last message was from april so I was wondering if we have any update on
this matter.

There was and has been some uncertainity around the redhat webappstack
packages. I think were at a stage where much of that does not matter
anymore. So moving to setting up and managing them in a more elegant way
than the testing repos should be possible.

in terms of timeline - there is a slightly wider conversation that needs
to be had around the whole idea of 'stacks' and what is and isnt ok for
centos to work with.

since there is a clear product from upstream, might be worthwhile
pushing with the WAS stuff first and then moving to expand into other
stacks.

Why not just build the packages yourself, until the project gets
webstack available?

the webstack rpms that work without any non-free stuff are actually
already built into the -testing repos. (
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories ) for c5, for c4 these packages are
included in othe centosplus repo.

[CentOS] PHP 5.2.x

2009-11-02 Thread Craig White
I am trying to install GOsa and it seems to need PHP 5.2

So I searched CentOS Plus but no luck

So I downloaded the src RPM from Fedora 11 and tried to build but got
derailed early on in the process with these errors...

+ cat /usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4 \
 /usr/share/aclocal/ltoptions.m4 \
 /usr/share/aclocal/ltsugar.m4 \
 /usr/share/aclocal/ltversion.m4 \
 /usr/share/aclocal/lt~obsolete.m4
cat: /usr/share/aclocal/ltoptions.m4: No such file or directory
cat: /usr/share/aclocal/ltsugar.m4: No such file or directory
cat: /usr/share/aclocal/ltversion.m4: No such file or directory
cat: /usr/share/aclocal/lt~obsolete.m4: No such file or directory
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.28181 (%build)

and I can't figure out where those might come from with yum
provide/search

Are there reliable repositories for PHP 5.2 for CentOS 5?

Is there some way I can get this to build on CentOS 5?

Craig

There have been packages for php 5.2 in the Centos Testing repository
for a while now. They work fine (for me at least), it's just that very
few folks are reporting the functionality, so they aren't moving into
centosplus or more common repositories.

See http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories for more information

I found several posts last night about php 5.2 never being in centos 5
because redhat wouldn't support centos.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

the safer way is to install it from sources.

the easy way is to install unofficial rpms :
- the announce : http://blog.famillecollet.com/post/2009/03/01/php-5.2.9-1
- the depot : http://rpms.famillecollet.com/el5.html

There is a version of php 5.2 in the CentOS-testing repository, as there
are versions of php5.2 for CentOS in Jason Litka's repository and in
Remi Collet's repository.

It seems to me that feedback to packages in testing are getting lost. I
sent mine for PHP and PostgreSQL (both run really fine on a number of
our servers), but there is no reply and no reaction. Maybe a Wiki-Page
or a ticket would be a better place to gather feedback then the L.

Its not really possible to reply to each and every email that is sent
through. Also, one persons's feedback isnt enough to move the pkgs away
from testing to stable.

Were working on the entire webstack stuff, which will get a complete
makeover and also allow for more recent packages in. I hope to work on
that once 5.3 is out of the door.

That is sweet news!

Great idea on the webstack repo as many web apps need the more updated

As announced before on the list, those who need newer PHP can use
these RPMs from Oracle:

http://oss.oracle.com/projects/php/

I was also set to make some RPMs for PHP, but my work could be just
wasted time should the webstack repo become public anytime soon... So,
any ETA about this?

And then make that into an rpm? Or just work around the packaging system
on CentOS?

Not a good idea.

There are some packages in the CentOS-Testing repository (which require
you to give feedback to the CentOS developers via
, there is Jason Litka's repository and there is
Remi Collet's repository.

But: If you have problems with the packages from there, then bug the
people you got the packages from - not CentOS.

Anyway, all of those means of distribution are way better than working
around package management.

Don't assume that because the bug is in php 5.1.6 that
upstream have not addressed it by backporting a fix see
http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/backporting/?sc_cid=3093
Have you filed any bugs in bugs.centos.org or checked to

There is no evidence supplied by yourself or by the OP that
upstream have not backported a fix to an issue 2 years old.
As the saying goes if its not in bugzilla its not a bug.

Well ... We have the CentOSPlus repo ... but that is using the RHWAS
version of PHP. If PHP-5.2 becomes "the enterprise standard" (or even
important for many apps) then I suspect that RH will add it to RHWAS ...
as they did the latest postgresql, etc. If they do, then we will add it
to the CentOSPlus repo.

Otherwise, I don't see CentOS providing that, at least not for normal
operations. Of course, I would never say never, as we may add it in the
future.

We are also not adding KDE-3.6 (or Gnome-2.20) to CentOS-4, etc ... nor
have we added many newer things to CentOS-3.8 or 2.1.

Fedora does exist for all of those things ... as will CentOS-6 :D

I'd be happy if KDE 3.5.7 would appear in CentOS-5, 3.5.4 still has
broken cups support (and other issues too).

Right ... but those are upstream issues.

CentOS, by it's very nature, is not patching upstream technical issues
(except bugfixes we figure out ... and those proposed fixes are normally
submitted to upstream, not rolled into CentoS).

The goal is to produce a distribution that is as close a possible to
upstream (warts and all) ... and help upstream fix things with patches
where we can figure out what is wrong. That makes EL better for
everyone and minimizes the FORK effect.

The kde-redhat project might be an option to get a newer KDE in CentOS-5.

I hope the gophp5.org problem will not repeat in php6.
I mean, I would be nice to have a more firendly upgrade plan, or maybe a
multi core/version php that supports both php4 or php5.

I agree that the move should be done toward 5.2, and also understand
the problem the hosting providers are having and will have when php6
is launched.

Dropping backward compatibility is always an issue ...

I don't think you can found PHP 5.2 at EPEL repo.

However I can found PHP 5.2.10 & 5.3 at Remi repo
(http://rpms.famillecollet.com/enterprise/5/)

Re: [CentOS] PHP 5.2.x

2009-11-12 Thread Piero
Hi,

I just installed GOSA using the PHP-5.2 from centOS testing:
cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
wget http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/CentOS-Testing.repo
yum --enablerepo=c5-testing check-update
yum --enablerepo=c5-testing update php
yum --enablerepo=c5-testing install php-mhash.x86_64
/etc/init.d/httpd restart

And then I used the packages from GOSA archives directly.

Hope this will help you!

[CentOS] PHP 5.2 on Centos4

2009-01-22 Thread John Clement
Bit of an emergency as I'm told this laptop has to leave here in 15 minutes,
I've gone ahead and configured, made, installed PHP 5.2 but an httpd restart
still only sees the old PHP 5.0.4, I think there's a fairly simple way to
get it to find the 5.2 version I've just installed but can't think what.

Any help gratefully received!

I am not aware of anyone working on php-5.2.x for CentOS-4 or CentOS-5
at this time. If someone wants to step forward and offer to maintain it,
we can consider hosting it in the centos-plus repos.

I have a nice 5.2.1 RPM built (and srpms) but it uses the newer MySQL 5
libraries and is on CentOS-4. It also has the "Suhosin Patch", mcrypt, and
mhash, which might be a bit out of date.

I can put some time into these if someone is interested, get them up to date
and tested. I have been looking to a reason to build a CentOS-5 buildbox, I
am sure I can put together an RPM for it.

Last release for PHP 5.2 & updates for 5.3

PHP Logo The users of PHP 5.2 should upgrade to 5.3 at their earliest

PHP 5.3.3 was released

That's an easy one: Install it correctly.

Did you remove the old one? Is the new one in the right place? Does httpd

Sorry if I riled you with the lack of information, I was under
pressure to get it done quickly and only asked incase someone knew the
answer off the top of their head based on it being a 'normal' install

php 5.0.4 has been outdated in the centos repos for AGES. I'm actually
rather shocked you were still running it at all.

As Ralph has already stated, you need to say how you installed 5.2,
since it's not available via any centos repo.

I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but Jason Litka has a yum repo of
updated mysql/php/http that is pretty awesome. Doesn't look like
anything's been updated since may of last year (php 5.2.6), but since
the new php only came out in December, he may just be lagging a bit.
You'll probably want to take a good hard look at

for CentOS 4 try Utter Ramblings repo, it will override all LAMP package

That is an upstream note.

Red Hat will support PHP 5 as shipped by them until the EOL of RHEL 5.

Though there are rumors that with release of Update 6 RHEL 5 will come
with an additional PHP5.3 package set - PHP 5.3 is an ABI change. Like
RHEL 5 Update 5 comes with additional samba3x and postgres84.

You can install PHP 5.3.2 from REMI repo, which is dependant
on EPEL repo.

You will need to setup the yum-priorities plugin, and only
enable REMI repo to install newer packages.

I had to set my priorities for REMI the same as Centos base
repo.

To enable the REMI repo use:

yum --enablerepo=remi install php php-cli php-devel

# Name : php
# Arch : i386
# Version: 5.3.2
# Release: 2.el5.remi
# Size : 3.3 M
# Repo : installed
# Summary: The PHP HTML-embedded scripting language.
(PHP: Hypertext
#: Preprocessor)
# URL: http://www.php.net/
# License: PHP
# Description: PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language.
PHP attempts to
#: make it easy for developers to write
dynamically generated
#: webpages. PHP also offers built-in database
integration for
#: several commercial and non-commercial
database management
#: systems, so writing a database-enabled
webpage with PHP is
#: fairly simple. The most common use of PHP
coding is probably
#: as a replacement for CGI scripts.
#:
#: The php package contains the module which
adds support for the
#: PHP language to Apache HTTP Server.

Installing REMI PHP will also update mysql server to 5.1.8

sounds like a great reason to get away from using PHP entirely, since
they seem to be incapable of releasing upgrades that don't massively
break applications. 4 years is just too short of a life cycle for a
major release used in a production system.

Always a dilemma. The very beauty of upstream therefore CentOS is that
security issues will be backported to our current installations. In a
hosting environment, you don't have to worry about breaking people's php
websites/apps. The downside is the long lived old php versions do not
run many of the new apps those same hosted clients wish to run. But in
most cases, it's those same clients that build something and expect it
to run forever and get very upset when they are told they must
upgrade/rewrite their scripts.

Of note. I did a 5.2 upgrade on one of our local use systems. I don't
know how much more is broken, but for certain the standard CentOS
install of SquirrelMail is borked. We don't use it on that system, so no
big deal. I thought I'd post this just so those with mission critical
machines would know that upgrading PHP does have an effect on at least
this one upstream package. I can only assume if one looked deep enough,
some other things may be broken as well. It really is hard to test
'everything' that a client may be using.

To me, the fact that PHP seems to have a 4 year life cycle, further
strengthens the use of CentOS with its 7 year life cycle. Yes, it is an
inconvenience from time to time. We don't get to count how many times it
is a convenience however. You only hear when it doesn't or can't work,
not how many times something continues to work due to this mindset.

Well, mainly problem is that rhel/centos is shipping so old php
version and mysql.

and "lack" of reliable source for newer versions for production.. I
hope rhel 6/centos 6 fixes this problem also..

It will temporarily fix the problem... But in n years, we will have once more
the same discussion and will hope centos 7 will solve this problem... Rinse
and
repeat ^_^
On the opposite side, I recently tried to explain to some mplayer dev why
having
dev (alpha, beta,rc) and prod(stable) versions was a good idea... but they stood
by their "alaways compile the latest svn version" and "it helps debug the
application faster" (true, but a pain for users) stances.

Just finished compiling php 5.2.9 from the sprms I found here:
http://oss.oracle.com/projects/php/

works fine despite the slight Oracle smell - but they should really
make a repository.

Once used Jason Litka's repository but it sees a bit stale now:

I also have src.rpm's here:

http://www.clfsrpm.net/php/

I use to maintain binary repo but that's a lot of work I no longer have
time for.

If I'm not mistaken, the Oracle src.rpm's are based on Fedora.
So are mine, except mine also has the suhosin core patch.

Mine currently has 5.2.9 but I probably won't update it, other than
maybe to add security patches as vulnerabilities are found.

I'm only running 5.2.9 myself because I wanted to report a bug and the
php devel team wants you to try the latest version first. Since 5.2.9
didn't break anything of mine, I kept it. (oh - and my bug wasn't a bug,
it was my mis-understanding of the still poorly documented DOMDocument
class related to namespaces)

centos also has some php 5.2.x I believe in their testing repo.

its in the testing repo, it never made it to release because clearly no
one really uses it. They all just got together made a lot of noise about
it just to be heard, and then when we had a package, they all decided
they were fine with the included 5.1.6 anyway.

Right, but according to Karanbir Singh you were working on a "official" 5.2.x version for CentOS 5.
This version was to be released on the centoplus repos some time ago. Therefore I asked.

Sad, I needed it, since some apps that we are hosting require 5.2.4+ . I'm currently running the
version 5.2.5 from the yjl.repo. But I'd appreciate to have a more official one, of course.

If you want to organise a testing group of people, maybe 5 or so, who
would be happy to trial and test this in typical use environments, I'd
be happy to update those packages and republish those.

seems that I will need PHP 5.2 in the near future, and I'd be happy if
it would be available for CentOS 5.

Thanks for your kind offer, but since I'm the only one in my group using centos 5 (rest is on
fedora) I think I'll switch to the remi repo and wait for the next major release.

Of course if someone on this list wants to join, we can start.

Thanks again
