Except you cannot really say, just based on the version. Since CentOS is an enterprise distro there will be backported patches that is not indicated in the version of the package itself. Are you sure you aren't just running out of memory or something? The last lines to the log files would be helpful. Try also the squid mailing list... But they are going to tell you your version is very old and you should compile the latest stable...
