I recently avoided buying a pair of WD green EARS drives
because of the problems ppl were having with them when used
in raids.

Newegg.com has many poor reviews. Some reviews mentioned the
drive can power down and cause the raid card to mark them as
missing. If you find a solution it would be interesting to
know. I went with Samsung green drives, as I have had good
luck with them used in servers in the past.

Maybe the default LVM alignment is wrong for these drives.. 
did you check/verify that?
