[ceph-users] Re: docs.ceph.com -- Do you use the header navigation bar? (RESPONSES REQUESTED)

2023-01-10 Thread John Zachary Dover
Everyone,

I have been able to move the text using the "scroll-top-margin" parameter
in custom.css. This means that the top bar no longer gets in the way (which
is likely why John was unable to replicate the issue).

Here is the pull request that addresses this issue:
https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/49644

Thank you to everyone who voiced an opinion.

I actually do not mind if i need to scroll up a line, but I also think
it is a good idea to remove it.

2023-01-09 Thread Frank Schilder
Hi John,

firstly, image attachments are filtered out by the list. How about you upload
the image somewhere like https://imgur.com/ and post a link instead?

In my browser, the sticky header contains only "home" and "edit on github",
which are both entirely useless for a user. What exactly is "header navigation"
expected to do if it contains nothing else? Unless I'm looking at the wrong
thing (I can't see the attached image), this header can be removed. The "edit
on github" link can be added to the end of a page.

Subject: [ceph-users] docs.ceph.com -- Do you use the header navigation bar?
(RESPONSES REQUESTED)

Do you use the header navigation bar on docs.ceph.com? See the attached
file (sticky_header.png) if you are unsure of what "header navigation bar"
means. In the attached file, the header navigation bar is indicated by
means of two large, ugly, red-and-green arrows.

*Cards on the Table*
The navigation bar is the kind of thing that is sometimes referred to as a
"sticky header", and it can get in the way of linked-to sections. I would
like to remove this header bar. If there is community support for the
header bar, though, I won't remove it.

*What is Zac Complaining About?*
Follow this procedure to see the behavior that has provoked my complaint:

   1. Go to https://docs.ceph.com/en/quincy/glossary/
   2. Scroll down to the "Ceph Cluster Map" entry.
   3. Click the "Cluster Map" link in the line that reads "See Cluster Map".
   4. Notice that the header navigation bar obscures the headword "Cluster
   Map".

If you have any opinion at all on this matter, voice it. Please.

FWIW I am not able to reproduce the problem you are describing. In all cases
the thin blue-green bar appeared above the term with the selected anchor
link.

I tried Firefox (108, Linux), Chromium (107, Linux) and for giggles Firefox on
Android. In all cases things looked fine to me and the selected term was not
hidden by that nav bar. I share because I was surprised by the result given
that others on the list seem to see the problem. But I also don't see what I
would describe as "two large, ugly, red-and-green arrows." Perhaps the page
is rendering differently for some people and we don't hit the issue in that
case?

PS. I also didn't see the png file in question. Perhaps this list strips
attachments?

2023-01-04 Thread Laura Flores
I‘ll reply-all so everyone can see:

Personally, I've used the "Edit on GitHub" feature on the header navigation
bar to make pull requests before. I haven't used the "home" icon though,
but that feature, I think, is replicated by clicking on the Ceph logo.

If we can still keep the "Edit on GitHub" feature somehow, I'd support
removing the navigation bar. I have the same complaint, that it covers the
headings.

I've never used this bar. In addition, as you mentioned, "Cluster Map" was
hidden by this bar. IMO, it's no problem to remove this.

BTY, I appreciate your work that improve docs. Thank you very much.

Best,
Satoru
