I just debugged what I think is the same problem in one of our
clusters; the Gateway was working fine for a bit, but then started
throwing this error.

Turned out the back-end mon and osd daemons had not been restarted so
where still running firefly code - if you're running on Ubuntu, the
packaging won't restart daemons automatically - it has to be done
manually post upgrade (so you can co-ordinate it across your clusters).

Cheers

Bug noted and libvirt maintainer on the server team poked accordingly.
Things are a little frenetic this week with the 15.04 release going
out tomorrow but I got a 'i can get to it after some plates stop
spinning ;)'.

Nice spot - and this is not the first time I've seen a bug due to
incorrect specification of the stripe size for rbd images.

trusty and utopic are firefly (0.80.9).
vivid is hammer (0.94.1) - this is also available for trusty via the

The ceph packages in Ubuntu 16.04 itself (currently 10.0.3 - target is for
Jewel to be included) work just fine - I've been testing Ceph on Ubuntu
16.04 for the last few months with systemd integration. Any fixes I've
done have gone back into the ceph repositories as well - I think there was
only one pertinent to the systemd integration

I've been working with the systemd support in the Jewel release and its
working OK for me - how are you trying to create your mon? I'm wondering
whether its your deployment process rather than the ceph packages that have
a problem here.

It would be handy to get visibility of your deployment log data; I'm not
currently able to reproduce your issue deploying ceph using ceph-deploy on
a small three node install running xenial - its correctly detecting systemd
and using systemctl instead of initctl.

Re: [ceph-users] Fwd: Re: Ubuntu xenial and ceph jewel systemd

2016-04-13 Thread James Page
OK - so my test was with the master branch of ceph-deploy which does work
correctly - specifically:

https://github.com/ceph/ceph-deploy/commit/b796a45b119afb9186301a868c25a9ba70642891
https://github.com/ceph/ceph-deploy/commit/374088665e43654e97512ab40f2cc141e238f21c

are post .31 so only the basic check is in the current released version.

I'll request that a new release is made - in the meantime I'll pick both of
those commits into the Xenial ceph-deploy package.

This is actually really tricky; runlevel [2345] should cover most use
cases as this will ensure that interfaces configured in
/etc/network/interfaces. But it sounds like that might not be the
case; Travis - in your example are all network interfaces configured
using /etc/network/interfaces?

Ceph has been a fully supported part of every Ubuntu release since
12.04; Dumpling will be maintained for the life of Saucy and will
receive point release updates as and when they are released.

The packages are interchangeable with those from ceph.com (I try to
keep things in sync as much as possible) so should work OK with
ceph-deploy.

Just to back this up with a bit more detail - this was all enabled as
part of the core Ubuntu distribution since 12.04; you can get
up-to-date versions of all components either by using the latest
interim release (13.10 for example) or using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the
Cloud Archive (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/CloudArchive).

OpenStack + Ceph (which relies on all of those features) is something
we test with for every upstream commit of OpenStack and for stable
updates as well so it gets exercised *alot*

I keep ontop of the stable releases during the development cycle; we
also have a minor release exception for Ceph which means I can push
point releases as stable release updates.

Tricky - when I last looked at this the consensus was that
100-continue support appeared to break general FastCGI compat - but it
would be nice to look at this again. I'm also trying to get
mod_fastcgi out of Ubuntu multiverse (due to a cause in the license
which makes it non-free from Debian's perspective) but upstream are
not that active so I'm not depending on that!

If you have specific issues that you know of for the current 3.12 and
final 3.13 kernels please highlight these to me - I can channel then
through to the Ubuntu kernel team for review.

I'll defer to more knowledgeable folk but I *think* this is already
enabled - but I may be wrong :-).

I'm tracking 14.04 Ceph related stuff on this blueprint:

I enabled this feature in the Juju ceph-radosgw charm for Ubuntu in
our 15.01 charm release - mod-fastcgi was causing so many headaches!

So far in our internal QA cloud its been very reliable running with
civetweb - we run three units of the ceph-radosgw charm frontend by
haproxy + VIP.

I'd +1 switching focus to this approach.

That's only used if you are using ceph as the default backing storage

[ceph-users] Unable to update Swift ACL's on existing containers

2014-05-22 Thread James Page

Hash: SHA256

Hi Folks

I'm seeing some odd behaviour with RADOS Gateway as part of an
OpenStack deployment:

Environment:

Ceph 0.80.1
Ubuntu 14.04
OpenStack Icehouse

Setting ACL's on initial container creation works just fine:

$ swift post -r '.r:*,.rlistings' 61853c5a-e1d4-11e3-b125-2c768a4f56ac

container is created with ".r:*" read acl

but if I try to update the ACL post creation, I get a 401 unauthorized:

$ swift post -r '.r:*,.rlistings' 61853c5a-e1d4-11e3-b125-2c768a4f56ac
Container POST failed:
http://10.98.191.31/swift/v1/61853c5a-e1d4-11e3-b125-2c768a4f56ac 401
Unauthorized AccessDenied

Any ideas?

I cherry picked the fix and tested - LGTM.

Thanks for the quick fix.

Re: [ceph-users] Ceph version upgrade with Juju

The ceph-mon and ceph-osd charms for Juju support upgrading between Ceph
releases; the upgrade is a rolling upgrade, orchestrated through keys
managed via the Ceph MON cluster itself.

The upgrade triggers are based around the Ubuntu Cloud Archive pockets that
also host Ceph (see [0]), so its possible to online upgrade using the
charms from:

  firefly -> hammer
  hammer -> jewel
  jewel -> luminous

we're working on the upgrade from luminous to mimic at the moment (but that
should not be a heavy lift so should land real-soon-now).

If you are currently deployed on Xenial (which shipped with Jewel), you can
upgrade directly to Luminous by re-configuring the charms:

  juju config ceph-mon source=cloud:xenial-pike

once that has completed (juju status output will tell you when):

  juju config ceph-osd source=cloud:xenial-pike

I'd recommend testing the upgrade in some sort of pre-production testing
environment first!

HTH

James

Ubuntu 12.04 now includes Hardware Enablement Kernels from Quantal (3.5)
and soon from Raring (3.8):

http://www.jorgecastro.org/2013/02/19/what-the-lts-enablement-stack-means-for-sysadmins/

This allows you to use a more recent, distro provided kernel than 3.2
which should have the required fixes/features you need.

That said if you are having problems with the 3.2 kernel please do
report bugs back to Ubuntu.

Cheers

If you require newer kernel versions then this is definitely the Ubuntu
recommended and supported approach.

We do ship Ceph as part of Ubuntu (Mimic was included with 19.04) however
interim Ubuntu releases only get 9 months of updates vs the 5 years that
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS receives.
