I wouldn't have guessed specialist, so thank you for clarifying (everyone).

I strongly recommend posting this to the cf-jobs list. (Instead of the
cf-jobs-talk list) since you'll reach a wider audience of job seekers. Best
of luck.

For a senior level position. Not really. The 100k part might be a bit
high but the starting number is inline I think.

Re: best it staffing firms in atlanta, ga

2005-03-30 Thread Cameron Childress
Born n raised in the good ole A-T-L., (co)founded the Atlanta
ColdFusion User Group, and worked in Atlanta as a ColdFusion developer
for various companies since v1.5. There is a metric ton of CF jobs in
Atlanta.

I moved to San Diego one and a half years ago, so it might have
changed a little since then, but not by that much. I've been keeping
tabs on things via the ACFUG lists. The best CF job resource in
Atlanta I've ever seen is the Atlanta ColdFusion User Group. Of
course, my level of involvement in the group makes me a little biased,
but a great many of the (skilled) developers I know in Atl have pretty
easily maintained steady employment by participating in the ACFUG and
via contacts made there.

Firhman, I know you've been on the ACFUG list before, so you should
know all about it. Join the list and participate (by doing more than
just by posting "I need a job" messages every week) and people will
learn your skill level and hire you accordingly.

Like any networking venue, you have to participate steadily and
historically for it to work properly. But it works great.

RE: (NY) Court rules telecommuter must pay taxes

2005-03-30 Thread Louis Mezo
As far as I can tell, so long as an individual is not double-taxed, there
should be no problem with this. Seems only fair that the State the employer
resides in should collect taxes for, indirectly, providing the work. The
State the worker resides in should have a right to collect property and
related taxes; but if they did not, indirectly, provide the source of
income, they should not be able to claim income taxes.

States should legislate in such a way that they are good places to live AND
good places to operate industry. "Economic justice" and a level playing
field in the marketplace is maybe the best way to achieve this. Now, if this
could be translated into international law... but I digress.

Anyway, if individuals ARE double-taxed, then this would be going against
the undeniable trend of distributed commerce, and would not hold up in the
long-run. In the short run, our economy would suffer the set-back for a poor
choice. The question is, do we as a country really want to behave
economically like a pre-EU Europe, or are we faster than that? -Louis

I probably wouldn't be affected by this type of law, since I am just an
"outsourced service" for my clients, not an actual employee. Clients don't
take any taxes out of my pay; I'm stuck paying them all myself.

On a tangent... Connecticut does (or did) have a law like this applying
to sales tax. If you buy something via mail order, you are still obligated
to pay Connecticut sales tax for it. Of course, I have no idea how (or if)
they are policing that. Who shows up at HR block w/ receipts of things
they need to pay tax on?

Income tax would be much easier to police and collect, I imagine.

All that said, I'd prefer that my income tax go to "better" the town /
state I live than the place where the company who hires me exists. If the
main office is in New Jersey, a branch office is in NY, and a telecommuter
is in Tennessee, I wonder who can claim the income tax?

Re: best it staffing firms in atlanta, ga

2005-03-30 Thread Michael Firth
Yeh the acfug.org has alawys been great. Actually when I lived in Atlanta
before, while going to school down in marietta i even attended a few meetings
for the acfug. If I remember the one meeting was actually using java servlets
within coldfusion mx. There was a guy from macromedia and found it very
informative.

Since I have been up here in New York I kinda lost touch with all the staffing
firms and getting contacts within Atlanta. Actually I have a friends who are
working though and they provided me with some info in conjuction with posting
to the job boards.

Actually I should be there for the April 6th meeting, I will resigned up if i
need to of course because the meeting is about Plum and that is of great
intrest.

And to everybody who has supplied with info thanks, now I have to get moving
rggghhh. To everybody in atlanta, i hope to see at that meeting which i am
going to try and attend.

Thanks,

Mike

RE: (NY) Court rules telecommuter must pay taxes

2005-03-30 Thread Jerry Johnson
If it is like CT, everyone gets a cut.

Your primary place of residence gets first cut. Once you have paid your
taxes there, you need to compute your taxes in the state you work in. If
you owe more in the state you work in than you paid to your state, you
need to pay the difference to the state you work in.

Living near the CT/RI border, a lot of coworkers had this exact problem.

RE: (NY) Court rules telecommuter must pay taxes

2005-03-30 Thread Louis Mezo
I'm thinking NY where the branch resides, would be the most fair for the
States. So, as an IC I guess you would have to file in NY for income tax,
and in CT for residency taxes. CT would complain, and I guess you would also
rather that CT get the funds, but because of the article, we are thinking in
terms of fairness to the States.

Then, I've also heard talk of doing away with all that and collecting
national sales taxes from the seller at the POS. Will likely end up as some
combination/compromise between the two down the road.

As for CT's sales tax law, there is a remote possibility they could police
that if they were working together with the IRS.

high but the starting number is inline I think.

interesting, San Diego has to be better weather, but housing must be
out of sight!

Been here in ATL 5 years now and keep saying I need to get involved
with teh cfug, yeah, bad me. I do hang on cf-talk mucho though. Now
I got a baby on the way within the next 3 weeks, so dunno if I'll be
making any cfug meetings.soon, but this april 6 one on PLUM could be
in the cards.

Yep...highest in the nation, when income is taken into account. On an
individual level, though, it totally depends on when you bought. I purchased a
new home in 1994 in what was to soon become one of the most sought after
neighborhoods in inland North San Diego County. The school ended up Top 10 in
the state, and everybody wanted in! In 10 years, I realized 250%. I'm sittin'
on nearly $1M of equity now. When I get the hell out of here and move to SE
Arizona, I'm gonna be able to buy an obscene amount of land, and put a really
nice Santa Fe style home on it.

San Diego CAN be a VERY nice place to live and raise a family.

My older brother keeps saying "We'll all be millionaires, inflation will
take care of that."
Of course, if a trip to McDonalds is $100, having a million won't mean
much.

Having equity in a house is nice, but you can't really cash in unless you
are moving to a place w/ a lower cost of living.

My stomach just churned at the thought of spending $100 at McDonalds.

It ain't cheap. They call it sunshine tax.

IMHO, the jobs you see on Monster and find through recruiters are
usually like looking for a needle in a haystack. Lots of junk, very
little value (though sometimes you can find some). Most of the best
jobs are never posted to a job board or given to a recruiter, so if
you depend on those, you may not find much of value out there.

Agreed. In my case, SE AZ = MUCH lower cost of living. I love my CF job at
HP, but I'd chuck it if I could do CF contracting from underneath clear dark
skies.

Not to prolong a slightly OT thread, but...

We're talking 5000+ feet of elevation, and in the Eastern shadow of the
Chiricahuas. Avg. July high is just barely 90, and the monsoons bring close to
4in/mo in July and August (which isn't much, but is some -- at least it keep
the wells wet!). It's the winters that are little more "biting". 3 or 4 in/mo
of snow in Dec./Jan. (with the odd 10-year storm dumping a foot), and avg. lows
a few degrees below freezing. But I can handle that. Satellite broadband, and
I'm happy anywhere. Especially if I can do CF work by day and astronomy by
night. Ahhh...that's the life. ;-)

I'm done.
