If you

A little more about

CF Users,

As you read earlier this week, we had to reschedule/cancel the meeting

at the last minute because of some unfortunate problems with our meeting

location.

I was hoping to reschedule for next week, but a number of difficulties

have prevented it (busy holiday schedule for everyone, lack of finding a

place and informing you quickly enough, and a lack of KNOWN interest on

your behalf).

We will tentatively plan the meeting on Flash Remoting for January. As

an added incentive, I have a number of giveaways that I will share at

that meeting.

As a side note, while I can completely understand the human tendency for

lurking on these lists, it is difficult to maintain this group, plan

meetings, etc. with the minimal participation, support, and even

interest that the majority show. If anyone would like to volunteer to

help out, I would appreciate it.

Comments, suggestions, and feedback would be nice.

Ryan

Keith,

You can't backup your MS SQL 7 DB while it is running? That's
strangeI know that you might have problems with direct tape backups
to open files, but SQL 7 has a 'backup' and 'restore' function in
Enterprise Manager. I use it frequently on both our development and
production machines. It takes the database and dumps it, with log files
I believe to a file, tape, etc. of your choice. The backup routine on a
quad p3/550 takes about 10 seconds on a 50meg db (25 filled) and aobut
2? Minutes on a 1gig db with 550megs of data. Once the file is created,
I usually zip the file and ftp it down to my local machines for backup
on CD. Our hosting provider actually runs nightly backups, but since
I'm not impressed with UUNET's service, I periodically back it up
myself.

Actually, we do something similar inside a backup procedure, because we
can't back up our database while MSSQL7 is running.

You could start here:

http://livedocs.allaire.com/cf50docs/CFML_Reference/Functions2.jsp#10998
87

Knowing what all of the string functions are (and what they do)
is the first
step. I recommend reading the language reference
cover-to-cover, twice.
The point is not memorization, but the ability to later say,
Wasn't there a
built-in function that does that..?

After that, the tricks are mostly around:
- mastering regular expressions
- using creative delimiters with list functions (such as cr/lf
for looping
around a file, line by line)
- recognizing creative uses for list functions

Are you looking for something in particular?

If you'd like to see several string functions in action, check
out the
attached template, which will find opportunities for the use of
CFQUERYPARAM
and modify the code to use it (then save the altered template to
a new
file.)

Jodi,
A few year back, Robin Greenhagen, Bryan LaPlante, and Ron Hornbaker
helped to form the user group. When I started attending about a
year
and a half ago we had a reasonably good turnout that varied from 8
to 30
depending on the speaker and the subject matter. We have had one of
the
original JRUN developers come speak, Ben Forta (CF Evangelist for
Allaire/Macromedia), and a few times a locally based employee of
Allaire
in their consulting arm.
Lately we have had smaller meetings with more ad-hoc based
presentations. Some of these presentations have been on security,
project development cost estimation, examples of coding, etc.
After/during most of the presentations, we spend time discussing
problems individuals are having and how to solve them (QA).
When I first attended I was a bit intimidated by the others since I
believed my skills were inferior to the rest. I have been
pleasantly
surprised to find that this is not the case. Most people have
experience in only a few areas of CF development and not in others,
so
while you may be weaker than some in say, form validation, someone
else
may have security, report generation, fusebox, etc.
The meetings are a good, informal way of meeting others in the
community, learning more about CF, and how local businesses use it.
You should consider giving it a try. Bring your questions, ideas,
and
anything you want to contribute to the group.
Ryan

Except the presentation would take only about 30 seconds.

 1. Make sure the CF-RDS service is started.

 2. Enable it in the CF Admin web interface.

 3. Add a new RDS server to Studio, entering the host name or IP,
any
username you wish, and the password assigned in step 2.
