RE: [KCFusion] same field names
I would just use an alias when calling the field name using the AS keyword. Misty -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Adaryl WakefieldSent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 4:01 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [KCFusion] same field names It does not happen too often but every blue moon or so I have a field that is named the same in two related tables. Usually I just rename a field and go about my day. Nobody but me here really knows what I'm up to anyway. Today I was making some tables and wound up with this: parentTable.state childTable.state In the parent table the state is stored in full. In the child table the state is stored as the two letter abbreviation for addresses. The problem that I usually go right around is the fact that to reference a result in a query you say: queryName.state but you can't specify which state you want. I preparation for the day when I may have to answer to someone and can't just rename a field, I was wondering if there was a way to actually reference a field in cfoutput query that I was not privy to. Re: [KCFusion] error var
Im fairly certain the error.template is correct but for some reason its just not catching it. It may be the scope that you are calling it for is just not available for the variable. RE: [KCFusion] Impossible Candidate
In all seriousness, for those of you who might have done something similar to this (hiring I mean) are we talking unrealistic expectations from employers or are we talking recruiters who don't know the different between java and javascript and between VB and VBScript and CF from ASP, etc. is it just an educational thing? If anyone actually did research on these positions to get them filled surely they must know it is almost unattainable. Either unatainable or when they find someone they won't pay em the gold they are worth. -- Original Message -- From: "Matt Jones" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 13:41:01 -0500 >They could have the candidates interview themselves to determine if they >are qualified and skilled in those areas. Thats what went through my head. What they seem to be needing is a CF programmer, a java programmer, a DBA, QA Specialist and a technical writer. I know last week we had the discussion about how employers were wanting candidates with CF experience plus maybe some C or VB. Even the skills required in that post I was quite surprised. Re: [KCFusion] changes between cold fusion server 4.5 and 5.0
I tried to look this up on Macromedia but I couldnt find any pricing on 5.0 on their site anymore but I did find version 5.0 on available on another web site for 4,975.55 and on Macromedia.com they have MX at $4999 so its really more expensive for MX. Plus if they are moving from 4.5 to 5.0 they are probably either getting a free copy through their subscription or paying the upgrade price which is even cheaper. Re: [KCFusion] deletes on database?
Well I know some that use stored procedures for everything. For me, I try to use them only when things get complex. For instance, Im writing an application that goes into the database checks who a shipper is based on a mailstop, based on that it does another query, takes the result of that query and goes into another database pulls out the next tracking number then calls another Oracle function within it. So you can see the more jumping around i have do, the more it makes sense to do it on the Oracle box instead. The other reason regardless of what makes sense, is some companies force you to put everything into stored procedures or functions no matter what. There are a lot of companies now moving to not letting CF programmers write SQL statements and instead having database guys do it because they are more efficient in writing SQL (ya I dont buy that either) but it is thought to be better. Make the database better by letting the people who specialize in it write the queries. This makes sense I suppose but its a big increaser of development time. Ive literally sat here twiddling my thumbs for hours waiting on my DB guy to come back and load my oracle function for me to test it. it sucks. But thats company processes at work! :) Misty -- Original Message -- From: "Adaryl Wakefield" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 12 Sep 2002 12:58:32 -0500 >Hey why is it every time I post something it generates an avalanche of >activity. :-) Its like you guys forget this thing exist. >So (and anybody can field this one) I was studying how to write stored >procedures in SQL Server last night I was like..gee. thats a lot of freaking >work. RE: [KCFusion] deletes on database?
In one of the projects I am working on now, they use Oracle stored functions only for database calls. When I first started doing it, I hated it. Honestly, I still hate it. From a development standpoint, as far as time goes, i would say it takes longer than just writing it directly into CF. When Im coding in CF I just write out my CF query and move on. When writing Stored Functions your 8 line query turns into a huge function where you have to declare varaibles, check for variabls, create the function, create your IN Variables, write in your return values, etc. The part that Stored Functions shine in, is with code re-use. The function I wrote is to be used across 3 systems. Which means, I only have to change it in one place and I can manage all 3 sites with it. RE: [KCFusion] Lookup Table
Thats one way. I saw on a site where there was 2 radio buttons. The first one was defaulted to checked and the select box was enabled to choose from a list. The other radio box, when it was checked, disabled the drop down box and enabled the other text box to enter data in. I guess the point of it was so that if you selected something from the drop down box and that radio button was checked it would disable the text box and put an empty string in it, so it wouldnt be necessary to even check for its existance. RE: [KCFusion] checking for nulls...
The only problem I see with this, is he says checking if a variable is NULL, which probably means it does exist, hes just checking the value of it. I do this alot with datbase queries where I loop through a recordset, set some variables to the values that were in the database and then check if it contains data or is null. I guess what might be helpful to decide which is the best route to take would be to know what the intention of the code is to be used for. Checking if it exists or checking if the value exists but is null. Just to add a thing or two about Communitech. We use to host with them and were extremely happy until they moved to Interland. I remember when it hit the news papers that Communitech was being taken over by Interland and even with the news paper right in front of them they lied to me and told me it wasn't happening. I was never real impressed with the customer service but when they did that, I pulled all of our customers from them immediately. RE: [KCFusion] ASP vs CF
One of the biggest arguements I have seen is the cost issue. Most of the time it starts with "well CF is more expensive to start with, but you save in development time so the cost really isnt a concern". Im sorry but that is a load. Sure, you take a CF expert who also happens to know a little ASP and yes they are going to develop their app faster in CF. But if you take someone who has been using ASP for years and knows all there is to know, there really isn't a significant difference in development time. I have been on both sides and both technologies are good. Each is just good for different things. As for cost though, I still havent seen any real evidence of CF being cheaper than ASP. For the record, I would still choose CF over ASP on most apps, but I still think ASP is awesome. Misty -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2002 10:41 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [KCFusion] ASP vs CF Robin, you're right, but your remarks are based on logic. I think that it is important to realize that the ASP vs. CF argument is a bit misleading when trying to build up the feature by feature comparison. We have been CF centric for 5+ years, but still write ASP apps for people if their environment, their staff, and their needs dictate it. Once you have technique in either tool set, there is less of difference in productivity than either group claims. I think comparing on a feature by feature basis is like looking at WordPad (ASP) vs. MS Word (CF). When was the last time you used CFAUTHENTICATE or CFLDAP? But your server loads that code up every time you start the CF services. One advantage to the ASP model of components (3rd party controls to do mail, encryption, credit cards, etc...) is that if we don't like one, we can pitch it and use one of the other 10 vendors out there. We have had to do this in the past when a CF component (CFPOP or CFHTTP) failed to meet our needs. So either way we incur the expense of buying the control that we like, but with CF, now I have two solutions loaded on the box, and I have to use CFOBJECT, which has had it's own issues. In the past we have felt like Alliare was the 3rd camp (ASP and J2EE were the two most visible, widely used tools). Now CF truly has an alliance with the Java camp in CFMX, and great interoperability with the .NET (formerly ASP, COM, ActiveX) camp. But if a company is deploying desktop applications in VB.NET, it will be a hard argument that they shouldn't deploy the web interfaces for that app in ASP.NET. There is no definitive right/wrong decision matrix that can account for all project variations, etc... What I believe was the biggest single accomplishment in CFMX won't be mentioned by Macromedia. They have essentially ensured that CFML will live for the next 10 years by implementing it on the J2EE platform. As a standalone, single vendor, propriety language, app server solution, someone could have easily said "we are shelving CF and pursuing JSP/J2EE" as about 10 - 20 other app server vendors have done. Now even large organizations that have $xxx, xxx, xxx worth of BEA Weblogic and IBM Webshpere can use CFML to get the job done. These development groups that have been implementing CF as an "unsupported" application on their networks can now take the approach that this is the CFMX tool for Weblogic/Websphere and run it in a fully supported production environment. [KCFusion] Query Problem
I have been having a problem with huge differences in queries being run through a CF page and those run directly in an Oracle client. I understand there might be some difference in time because of the overhead of CF but I can't imagine why it would be so great. When I run this particular query through the Oracle client it takes just over 2 seconds. However when I put it in a CF page it is taking 28 seconds. This is a plain CF page with just the cfquery on it. I dont even display the results. The debugging code shows the query alone is taking 28 seconds. Any ideas on why this would be happening and what I can do to fix it? Thanks, Misty __ The KCFusion.org list and website is hosted by Humankind Systems, Inc. There is a little Excel Icon that I click on to export my results to an XLS file (not csv). A small window about 2 inches wide, 1 inch across pops up and says "Building Excel FilePlease wait" so I CFFLUSH that much to the page while it builds the file and writes it to the server using CFFILE. Once that file is completely written I then display "Retrieving Data". This is where I then through Javascript submit the page to another file called getfile.cfm. In getfile.cfm I am using CFCONTENT to retrieve that file back out of the server and then delete it. The problem is two things... 1. When I get the pop up box it says I am trying to download a file "getfile.cfm" Why is it naming the file in the pop up box the name of my CFM template? But when I click save as it saves it with the correct name "myfile.xls". Someone on the macromedia board suggested I put the filename after the getfile.cfm page as you can see in the code below, and it seems to fix this problem, but I dont know how stable this is. 2. When I click open instead of save as, it doesnt open. Instead, I get a second dialog box asking me once again if I want to open or save as. This time, if I choose open, it does open Excel and I can read the file. Why would it give me this pop up twice? After the file downloads I close the window that originally popped up. RE: [KCFusion] OT - Software Marketing
We have had some great experience with selling apps through our site www.bigosoftware.com (no pun intended :) ) We do mostly ColdFusion but are working on about 4 ASP based apps that are similar in functionality to some of our CF apps. As far as marketing goes, I would say the best success we have had is with our AuthorizeNet gateway interface tag. Its been on the market for about a year now and we get so much exposure for it through AuthorizeNet and also the other site I developed at CFCustomTags.com. The other really good experience I have had is with the CF Linkmanager product we have. With web directories being on the rise you could target basically any web site owner with CF and make a sale. Everyone wants directories, be it web sites, addresses, emails, etc. As for pricing, well its kind of a hit or miss. When I started selling CF Authorize over a year ago, I started it off at $39 I think it was. After watching the market and its sales I know I can now get $125 from the same tag that sold for $39 last year. We have actually had increase in sales for that one since the price increase. I think it has a lot to do with perceived value: more expensive it is, the better it is. The other thing we are trying is a developer discount program. Lots of web developers, both firms and freelancers, buy our software at a discounted price and resell it at whatever price they want to their customers. Besides who wants to reinvent the wheel if its already there. Also you wouldn't believe with a name like Big O Software how many other programmers out there are always emailing and asking me the meaning behind it. So with a name like that, programmers might just click on the name just to see what it is (If you don't get this never mind). ok guys, another related question. Instead of NT, does anyone know of a variable I could call to get the novell login id of a user. Basically they are already logged on to the network so when they access the web site I want to capture their novell login name and compare that to our permissions table on Oracle, but first I need their login. auth_user, remote_user do not work. Create a UNIX account that IIS can utilize to authenticate requests. I haven't really explored LDAP options...can NT authenticate through LDAP instead of NTFS security somehow? Don't really know if that would all work...but it seems logical to me. Any other thoughts? RE: [KCFusion] Yesterday's meeting
I used Fusebox when it was Fusebox 1.0 and they have made some great improvements, but even back then I thought it was very cool. It can really help you organize your code and makes everything so much easier for code reuse. I reuse queries quite often so it would come in quite handy. Also it does make things more organized and for some reason it really makes your code look cleaner. The only drawback I would say that there is to Fusebox is it can be a chore in large applications to keep track of your files. I could have 5 queries, 4 displays, 5 actions, 2 forms, and whatever else in a fuse which means for just that fuse that is atleast 16 pages I now have to manage. Having said that, I dont think that is a major drawback, I just think it takes the time to get used to doing it that way. Re: [KCFusion] ColdFusion Certification
I took it last year and honestly for me it was more of a personal goal more than anything else. Certification was also important to me to take up some of the slack of no college. As far as my employer goes, they were like "oh hey good job" but thats about it. Skills and competence in your programming can more than make up for a certification if cost is an issue. As far the test goes, if you have the $150 its a good investment in yourself. I did it on a whim one morning on my way to work so I was rushed with about 25 minutes to take it but passed it first time through. If you know CF fairly well, then you'll do fine but preparation may have made it a little easier. :) Misty Woodward [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.oleani.com -- Original Message -- From: "Sheeran, Jean" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 11:50:06 -0500 >Has anyone taken the Allaire CF exam? Re: [KCFusion] Dynamically Creating AND Populating Radio Buttons
Run your query to pull the user info and set a variable for the department id then run the query to pull the list of departments and select if it its chosen.
