It will help if you can paste the entire query and your output code.

 Thanks

Yes, not all of the photos will have comments, but all will have prices (and
 the same number of them...8)

Here is what I have so far:

   cfquery name=rsPhotoInformation
 datasource=#application.dsn#
   SELECT *
   FROM photos
   LEFT OUTER JOIN prices ON
   photos.photoID = prices.photoID_fk
   LEFT OUTER JOIN comments ON
   photos.photoID = comments.photoID_fk

   WHERE categoryID_fk = cfqueryparam value=1
 cfsqltype=cf_sql_integer
   /cfquery

And again, here are abbreviated table structures:

 photos table

 photoID
 photoTitle

 comments table

 commentID
 commentText
 photoID_fk

 prices table

 priceID
 priceValue
 photoID_fk

 Thanks again!

hooking up IMS Lite

Hi,

We have a client that wants to use IMS lite to send out mass emails and IMS
lite has already been 'put' on their server.
They would like to get an estimate on how long it would take us to 'hook it

Having no experience of IMS I thought I'd ask the question to someone who
has!

So,

a.) Does that make sense?
b.) How easy is IMS to integrate with cfmail?

;) Thanks in advance,

CDDocument Image problem

2007-07-23 Thread Chad Gray
I am trying to use CFDocument to make a PDF of a web page.

I have an image that produces what kinds of looks like a missing image icon in
the PDF. When I click on thing in Acrobat it says There was an error
processing an annotation or link. There was a problem reading this document
(14).

http://chadgray.info/Untitled-1.jpg

Now this code works fine on our development server. Only on the production
server do I get the problem.

My code to place the image is simple enough. The page and image are in the
same folder. The PDF is saved into a sub-folder.

td width=352 height=59 valign=top align=center
img src=invoicelogoNEW.jpg border=0
/td

My code to make the pdf and save it is:
cfdocument format=pdf pagetype=letter name=invoice overwrite=yes

cffile action=write file=#application.invoicePDFPath##fileName#
output=#invoice#

H now that I think more about this. The area that this code is running
from does have NTFS permissions on it so users have to login to use the web
site. Does CFDocument need permissions to grab the image and use it in the
PDF

Not sure if you can do that, but you might want to try getting the file
extension as a calculated column in the query

SELECT
(
RIGHT( filename, 3 )

Then, in the CFOutput, you could group=ext

cfquery name=foo datasource=bar
 SELECT

  right(filename, 3) AS ext,

cfoutput query=foo group=ext

that, of course, assumes you only have file extensions of 3
characters. .jpeg or .tiff would throw off the logic. I suppose you
could run an instr() function inside of a CASE to determine the
position of the dot if need be.

Re: GROUP BY RIGHT()?

No, but you could select a column in your query that reads just the first 3
characters of the filename, give it a column alias, order by that column
alias, and then use that in your cfoutput group attribute. Something like
this (check your particular RDBMS for the Right() function or similar):

select filename, right(filename, 3) as lastThreeFileName
from my table
order by lastThreeFileName

cfoutput group=lastThreeFileName/cfoutput

Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread Jason Fill
I am looking for several opinions on all these frameworks and any others.
Currently we are trying to figure out which one(s) we need to focus on
evaluating so start a plan to port our current system into a framework. Our
current system is basically a ton of cfincludes with the data access display
and business logic all wrapped together. We would like to of course
standardize the way new parts of the application are built so all three
developers are writing virtually the same type code. The application is HUGE
with a lot of reporting, I would say that virtually 70% of the application is
reporting. Many of these reports are driven from one time use queries -
basically queries that cannot be reused in other places.

One concern is that a framework might add too much overhead to the application
because of the use of XML files etc. The only framework any of the three has
worked with is Fusebox(2 thru 5).

It is acknowledged that we really should start using a framework but we just
don't know which one is going to scale the best for us and makes the most sense.

As a side note - we do not have time to really play with all the frameworks
to see which one we like the best - that just not possible.

Thanks

Thanks guys for the suggestion,

I'll agree that the calculated column is probably my best bet, you're right
Charlie about that assuming the file extension is only 3 characters, however
two file extensions with the same last 3 characters isn't all that likely.

Now, I'm having a little trouble with this group by:

cfoutput query=VARIABLES.Messages group=type

For some reason it doesn't appear to group properly, either that or I'm
forgetting how to use it properly :-D That code snippet outputs like this:

See how it's not grouping the gifs properly?

No, but you could select a column in your query that reads just the first 3
characters of the filename, give it a column alias, order by that column
alias, and then use that in your cfoutput group attribute. Something like
this (check your particular RDBMS for the Right() function or similar):

select filename, right(filename, 3) as lastThreeFileName
from my table
order by lastThreeFileName

cfoutput group=lastThreeFileName/cfoutput

Re: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread John Paul Ashenfelter
If everyone's worked with Fusebox, why not just pick Fusebox?

There's always a lot of concern over performance and frameworks --
bluntly, unless you're doing *phenomenal* transaction volume with very
tight time tolerances, the framework shouldn't be an issue. Scaling
out horizontally or vertically is how you'll typically handle scaling,
so the framework is a non-issue. And if it's that big a deal, you roll
your own that focuses on performance or you throw bigger hardware at
it until the problem disappears. If most of your application is
reporting, then the databases (and correspondingly disk) are going to
be the noticeable bottlenecks, not the parsing of the XML for a
framework file.

If you don't have time to play with them, then go with what your
developers know. You're not going to have detailed performance
information without spending time playing with them against your code.

If your developers are not very experienced in OO development, that's
another big plus for Fusebox. And with the declarative model of
Fusebox, porting an existing application over is fairly
straightforward since the top level fuses are already specified. You
could quickly implement a MVC-oriented container using Fusebox5, use
your existing CFINCLUDed code in the appropriate place (model in
model, controller in controller, etc) and you'd be Fuseboxed. Using
the something like MG or MachII has the additional overhead of really
getting familiar with OO, which might be too big an initial bite.

It is acknowledged that we really should start using a framework but we just

RE: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread Peterson, Chris
I will throw my $.02 towards model-glue:Unity. I have been doing OO
based .cfc's now for several years, and MG:U really clicked with me.
You have your model (which is basically events setup that fire off
controller message-listeners). The model simply says 'ok, I have a
request for something called X. Go run these controller actions (which
will run queries, do actions, whatever you need) then invoke the view Y.

Your controller block is just XML saying 'I have an event called
goGetSomething that is tied to a cfc named myStuff.controller, and
called a function called getSomething'

Your views just grab data that the model or the controllers stuck into a
'scope' especially for the view.

They have decent documentation and tons of examples out there, and once
I got started, adding in new functions and pages is a snap!

I do not want BOM support. I just want to have your best practices and Unicode

because of BOM support, it is because of having Western in page encoding.

Ray has mixed encodings on his code. Some has Western, same Unicode w/o BOM and

BOM is an optional point but I also *prefer* having BOM on all project

it's optional by definition for utf-8. there's quite a bit of s/w floating
around that will ignore or even remove it. unless you can guarantee that yoru
files won't get touched by one of those apps, you're probably better off
relying on cfprocessingdirective.

We are talking a solution on CF and I do not care about other software or
solutions. You can not also guarantee anything if we consider all possible
alternatives. What we are trying to do is having a working platform in CF in
order to have Unicode support. Just that. :)

Ah, when I have Turkish as locale on my OS, CF still does not work/start. Is
this my problem because of having Turkish as locale. Or this is an issue on CF
which needs to be handled by Adobe or whoever. Specially if you consider other
J2EE solutions such as Tomcat or JBoss works without any issue. ;)

Have a nice week!

Re: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

I am looking for several opinions on all these frameworks and any
others. Currently we are trying to figure out which one(s) we need to
focus on evaluating so start a plan to port our current system into a

the data access display and business logic all wrapped together. We
would like to of course standardize the way new parts of the

One concern is that a framework might add too much overhead to the
application because of the use of XML files etc. The only framework
any of the three has worked with is Fusebox(2 thru 5).

It is acknowledged that we really should start using a framework but

I'm porting an application to a framework also and decided on MachII. I looked
at the three frameworks you mentioned and chose MachII. I chose it because it
seemed to make MVC development with OO easiest for me to understand. Fusebox
and ModelGlue are good frameworks though, but MachII seemed to click with me.
Performance also isn't much of an issue because the application is initialized
(XML file read and parsed) once and runs from memory (speaking from MachII and
ModelGlue experience since I don't really understand how Fusebox is working
under the hood in that respect). Even on my development machine, when I turn
off debugging for a moment to test the look and feel of the app, it is blazing
fast compared to my old app. In the end though, any of the frameworks will make
a good choice, but don't expect that you will be up and running with ANY of the
above frameworks in short time. It took me some time to evaluate each one and
then finally to get comfortable with MachII. Each will have a learning curve to
get over before your staff become efficient. Possibly your developers need to
do a little homework outside of work to get up to speed with how each framework
works. It would be a good investment of time to take a little piece of your
application and re-factor it into each of the frameworks to see how they work
and which one would benefit you. This is what I did before I decided on MachII!

Hi all,

I am using Navicat (navicat.com) as MySQL client now but I would like to hear
what you have.

Do you have any MySQL client suggestion? I have MySQL 5.x and I need a solution
which also supports Unicode.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

CFC With Remote Access

I have a cfc that is called from JS that returns a string, works

RE: CFC With Remote Access

2007-07-23 Thread Peterson, Chris
Not sure about the differences from CF6 to 7, but you should add var
declarations to the beginning of your file to ensure no funky variable
values or un-expected behavior. I would re-write it like this:

CFFUNCTION name=FindPromoCode returntype=string output=no
access=remote
CFARGUMENT name=ThePromoCode required=yes type=string
CFARGUMENT name=SubType required=yes type=string

cfset var findPromoCode = '' /
cfset var isFound = 0 /

CFQUERY name=FindPromoCode datasource=#request.dsource#
  SELECT SubscriptionType
  FROM SpecialOffers
  WHERE PromoCode = cfqueryparam cfsqltype=cf_sql_varchar
value=#arguments.thePromoCode#
 /CFQUERY

CFIF FindPromoCode.recordcount GT 0 AND
FindPromoCode.SubscriptionType IS NOT

CFIF Arguments.SubType EQ FindPromoCode.SubscriptionType
CFSET IsFound = 1 /
CFELSE
CFSET IsFound = 2 /
/CFIF
/CFIF

cfreturn IsFound /

Re: MySQL Client

2007-07-23 Thread Terry Schmitt
I would highly recommend Datastudio by Aquadata. It is a great Query tool that
is cross-platform and works with all of the popular databases. I use it for
MSSQL and MySQL. The table and column insight is great.

I have recently settled on DBManager by DBTools for general MySQL admin. It
has a pretty good range of functionality with a real nice diagram tool for
working with foreign keys and documenting a database. It also has a query tool,
but I use Datastudio for all my query work.

Its the same old story for shared ColdFusion hosting... morons can
code in crap that takes the server out and blows everyone else up with
it. A service nightmare even if the host has CF knowledge.

Takes me back to the days when I was on shared CF hosting at
Interland. Anyone remember that nightmare world? And then moving to
Virtualscape and how good they were by comparison?

ah... CF nostalgia.

Re: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread Jason Fill
Thank you all for the input on this topic. I defiantly think that in the short
term and to get started Fusebox would have the smallest learning curve - which
would allow us to get going fairly quick. While that is great, our main goal
here is to adopt a framework that will be flexible and grow with us. We do not
want to go down a path and in 2 years sayman I wish we would have taken a
little extra time to adopt xyz framework over the one we chose.

I think we have pretty much decided that we are going to use ColdSpring to take
care of IoC. So let me throw this out, does any one of the frameworks lend
itself better to the use of ColdSpring, and possible Transfer or Reactor? I
have used ColdSpring with a Fusebox app and it seemed to work well, however I
am not sure if it just works easier or better with other frameworks. Sorry if
these seem like redundant questions, just trying to get everything that is on
the top of my head out.

On a side note, I am the only one that has any Fusebox experience and would not
like to put that into our equation in this evaluation of which is best suited
for us.

Thanks again!

Just to give you some background on this decision, after a recent audit of
our services we found that the top six 'worst performing' servers were those
that had the Linux CF Builder plans. That's not to say they're bad servers,
but compared to the rest of our network they're an eyesore in terms of
support. I think this has a LOT to do with the fact that SeeFusion, the
software we use to keep CF in control on shared servers, doesn't work in a
 Linux Environment.

Moving to a VPS would be good because you don't have to worry as much about
CF performance problems stemming from other clients - just your own code. As
to the RAM requirements CF can run on our 512 offering provided it's not a
high traffic site...in which case I'd suggest the 1 GB offering.

The steps are pretty simple.

Front end
Form to allow people to subscribe to the email.
Form to allow people to UNSUBSCRIBE from the email

When they ask to subscribe, add them to the database
When they ask to unsubscribe, remove them from the database (or mark
them inactive)

Backend
Form to allow you to create press release

When the press release is created and saved, pull all the current
active records from the email list, and send an email with the press
release information to all those users.

Those are the main steps. The rss idea is a good one, but more of an
also for me than an instead of.

Re: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread Cutter (CFRelated)
Jason,

There is a fantastic sample app, called LitePost, that Matt Woodward,
Peter Farrell, Chris Scott, and few others contributed to, that is
available on GoogleCode. It's way undocumented, but basically it shows a
simple blogging application. The 'Model' layer is a single set of CFCs,
with a single ColdSpring config file. The 'Controller' and 'View' layers
are done in MG, Mach-II, and Fusebox, allowing you to try it on each
one. Really great way of showing that, if written properly, an
application can fairly easily port between any framework.

Each framework app uses the same set of 'Model' components, as well as
the same ColdSpring config file.

Some ideas:

 The steps are pretty simple.

 Front end
Form to allow people to subscribe to the email.
Form to allow people to UNSUBSCRIBE from the email

When they ask to subscribe, add them to the database

After submit send an e-mail which contains their wish and a link to finalize
the request with a generated authorization code that you can generate random
such as UUID etc.

When they ask to unsubscribe, remove them from the database (or mark

Same process. First send an e-mail to authorize.

 them inactive)

 Backend
Form to allow you to create press release

When the press release is created and saved, pull all the current
active records from the email list, and send an email with the press
release information to all those users.

Those are the main steps. The rss idea is a good one, but more of an

Not sure about the differences from CF6 to 7, but you should add var
declarations to the beginning of your file to ensure no funky variable
values or un-expected behavior. I would re-write it like this:

access=remote
CFARGUMENT name=ThePromoCode required=yes type=string
CFARGUMENT name=SubType required=yes type=string

cfset var findPromoCode = '' /

I've tried the MySQL tools, DBManager and a couple others and settled on

Running CF7 on 64 bit Windows

2007-07-23 Thread Jim McAtee
I thought I'd asked this either here or the CFServer list and was told it
wasn't a problem. Can we run CF7 on 64 bit Windows Server 2003? Dual
64bit Xeon 5130s, and IIS6 as the web server.

I'm getting the following error trying to access the CFIDE:

%1 is not a valid Win32 application.

Some searches lead me to not a lot of concrete information. The
configuration is not fully supported by Macromedia, whatever that means.
Are there no workarounds? Do we have to either wait for CF8 (surely 64
bit is fully supported in CF8, right?) or else install 32 bit Win2k3
Server?

Re: Model Glue - Fusebox - Mach II ...... Looking for Opinions

2007-07-23 Thread Brian Kotek
I also presented on this very topic at the Frameworks conference earlier
this year. My slides and code are available for download:

http://www.briankotek.com/blog/files/framework_agnostic_models_presentation_code.zip

The takeaway should be that when your model is well architected and
encapsulated, switching from say Fusebox to Mach-II should only require
rewriting the config XML files and slight modifications to the views to
support the way Mach-II passes event arguments. You should also be able to
hit your model directly from a Flex front end with no (or extremely few)
changes required.

The question of ColdSpring and ORM is really separate from the UI-Controller
frameworks. ColdSpring, Reactor, and Transfer play well with any of them.
I'd say technically Model-Glue 2 has a slight edge because it already has
ColdSpring embedded within it (the framework itself uses ColdSpring to
configure itself) and also has built in ORM support (via the built in
ORMAdapter and scaffolding). But getting ColdSpring to work with the other
frameworks is not difficult at all, nor is using one of the ORM frameworks.
Basically, I'd be more concerned about which UI-Controller framework the
team was most comfortable with, as well as the challenge of really
understanding best practices regarding ColdSpring and the ORM frameworks
themselves. These are the hard parts.

Hope that helps.

 Jason,

There is a fantastic sample app, called LitePost, that Matt Woodward,
Peter Farrell, Chris Scott, and few others contributed to, that is

simple blogging application.

CF8 will only support 64-bit on Solaris. CF7 doesn't support 64-bit. I would
stick to what is supported unless your client and you are willing deal with
debugging things without Adobe support. Is there a particular reason you are
wanting 64-bit? Just processing power? Thread throughput?

They all work fine with ColdSpring and Transfer or Reactor. My
startup's website is built with Fusebox 5.1, ColdSpring and Transfer.
We initialize the model - using ColdSpring - in a fuseaction in the
model circuit, specified by the appinit global fuseaction. Then we
either invoke service layer CFCs from fuseactions or just interact
with them from model fuses (CFML pages includedd from the model
circuit's fuseactions).

Well, you can't really take it out of the equation since you are part
of the team and therefore your experience is part of the team's
experience.

I have experience with all three frameworks (and ColdSpring and
Transfer and Reactor as well) but if I was part of a team that on
balance had more experience with any given framework, I'd be happy to
go that way. If I was part of a team that had no framework experience,
I'd have to balance other aspects of their experience to determine
which framework I might pick. Overall, picking any framework is better
than not picking one.
