Re: How good is cfreport?

2007-11-26 Thread David Mineer
I have been using crystal reports for years, but not with cfreport. I
use an asp page to render the Crystal Report in a .pdf format. I pass
the variables I need from coldfusion to the .asp page, which then
calls the Crystal report, and exports it to .pdf, then displays the
..pdf to the user.

More recently I have written code to use .net to do ths. It should be
easy with .net, but it aint for me, although it does work.

But it is a major pain and not very portable between machines. I am
really hoping that I will be able to convert this to the CF report
builder, although I have not been able to convert our detailed, multi
column report to the cf report builder copying the functionality and
design.

Recreating your reports with cfreport builder may be quicker. People
probably hate this option.

Again, it's not a knock against Pete personally,
I've never even communicated with him.

I'm just not interested enough in the product to
engage in a dialogue about it... too much to do.

But am I (and Claude) the only one who finds it strange
that Pete would put up a component for sale and
put up demos that don't even utilize the component?

I may have to contact him to ask him what's up with that?

Oracle RAW(50) - string conversion

2007-11-26 Thread Matt Barfoot
When I cfquery a Oracle database row with a RAW column in it, it is returned
as a ByteArray.

If I view the column in a SQLNet client like Toad you see a string, probably
hex I'm guessing.

I'm wondering how I correctly detect it and convert it to a string
afterwards?

I want to avoid doing it within the select statement with cast or convert,
because I'm generating dynamic "select * from mytable" statements and the
code doesn't know it will end up with a raw (ByteArray).

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt

RE: error caused by cfqueryparam inside cfif

2007-11-26 Thread Brad Wood
Could the error be caused by scoping issues for the variables you using
in the CFC?

What scope is the variable "value" in, and is your cfif really
evaluating the Boolean "true", or is it a real cfif with a variable in
there? If so, what scope is it in? Arguments? Variables? Local Scope
(var)?

~Brad

Can anybody help me figure out this error?

I'm struggling with a really confusing error. It occurs when I put a
cfqueryparam tag nested inside a cfif tag.

More interesting data: This error only occurs on CF8. And only when the
code is located in a .cfc file. It doesn't happen if the query is on a
...cfm page, or using CF7.

Get rid of the "*" in the SELECT *. Using CFQueryParam causes the
structure to be cached. Then, if the underlying DB changes, the
structure no longer applies, but since CF sees it as the same thing,
weirdness ensues. In general get rid of all SELECT *'s in your code.
They are evil and cause headaches like this.

Re: Flex 2 books for CF/AS3

"Adobe Flex 2: Training from the Source" is a good book to read. One
of the authors of that book, James Talbot, also did the Adobe Flex 2
Rich Internet Applications DVD from Total Training. The DVD is a great
way to get introduced to Flex.

error caused by cfqueryparam inside cfif

2007-11-26 Thread Nicholas Vacek
Can anybody help me figure out this error?

I'm struggling with a really confusing error. It occurs when I put a
cfqueryparam tag nested inside a cfif tag. For example, here's a query:

   SELECT *
   FROM TableName
   WHERE 0=0

 AND fieldName =

The relevant lines of code that causes the error:

AND fieldName =

However, if I leave off the cfif wrapper, the following works:
AND fieldName =

Alternatively, if I don't use a cfqueryparam, then this code works
without errors too:

AND fieldName = #value#

Here's the error message:
The system has attempted to use an undefined value, which usually
indicates a programming error, either in your code or some system code

When I wrap the query it in a try-catch and dump the catch scope, I see
an empty error - no message, no stackTrace, nothing.

More interesting data: This error only occurs on CF8. And only when the
code is located in a .cfc file. It doesn't happen if the query is on a
..cfm page, or using CF7.

What's going on?!?

My comments weren't meant as a knock either, I just found it weird that his

When I get the time to mess with them and if I still have issue's I will
contact him but I really don't feel like I "should" have to contact him for
assistance with something I bought that shouldn't be to difficult to figure out
or be better documented in the purchase. It's not like it was a fortune to pay

Updating to Eclipse 3.3...

2007-11-26 Thread Andy Matthews
I currently use 3.2.2 and I'd like to upgrade to 3.3 so that I can start
using the CF 8 debugger. But when I go to Help > Software Updates > Find &
Instal > Current installs (or new features), I only see updates to the 3.2
branch.

Is it possible to upgrade to 3.3 without uninstalling my current build?

If it's not, how can I back up my files so that I don't lose my preferences
and settings? I'd rather not even bother upgrading if it might lose my
settings.

Thanks in advance.

RE: cfswitch in cf8

2007-11-26 Thread Mark A Kruger
A bit off of this particular topic but this got me working with JavaCast( )
trying to influence the way CF handles the comparison operater. I wrote a
blog post about it.

http://www.coldfusionmuse.com/index.cfm/2007/11/26/javacast.iterations

The summary is that fiddling with the way CF handles comparisons doesn't
offer much hope for appreciable gains.

You had very good things to say about general performance tuning.
Unfortunately my reply to Sean was specifically in the context of the
original thread so general performance tuning tips were a little immaterial.

That's fair enough, and I do appreciate the critique. I do however feel
that I've shown an iterative test to be a very good assessment for the
specific bit of code that prompted my original post.

If it helps, I did run the test originally for 10,000 iterations which,
given my application, is a very realistic number to consider. While the
comparison is less dramatic the cfswitch is still a full second slower which
is significant enough to me not to use it in this specific situation. (47
ms / 1141 ms) My CIO has requested that the average page load time in our
app be 3 seconds or less. Now I am being told to burn 1/3 of that time
purely because a switch is more readable and it would be "dumb" to use a
conditional structure known to be faster in CF7. Personally I think
that advice stinks. :)

> I would recommend that you investigate doing that conditional
processing > > in a stored procedure if you can.

I was waiting for that. :) What I am working on happens to be the
interface for a generic reporting tool where we define dynamic criteria and
write custom SQL in a proc for each report. It's very handy because only
the SQL required to produce the results is all that's necessary to build a
new report. The CF code in question displays results in a dynamic way
formatting each value and aligning it with appropriate HTML etc as necessary
based on the meta data available from the result set and the column types.
I am always open to suggestions, but I would hard hardly call it the job of
my SQL server to apply formatting and HTML to my data for obvious reasons--
the largest of which would be separation of data layer from display layer.
Of course I could write an intermediate and generic proc which would format
the result set before handing it to ColdFusion, but that would take more
obfuscated dynamic SQL than I care to deal with.
I would only resort to another language if what I wanted could not be
accomplished quickly and easily in ColdFusion 7, and in this case it
can-- with the cfif tag. :)

As a matter of fact non of them. I found a way to do that.
I write the code down:

SELECT *

  #Recordset1.firstName#
  #Recordset1.lastName#
  #Recordset1.email#

if (NOT Recordset1.CurrentRow eq Recordset1.RecordCount AND
Recordset1.CurrentRow mod 2 eq 0) {
writeoutput("");

Sure, I can see that. Although, you're not really burning 1/3rd of that time
unless that's the only page everyone's running, you're just dragging down
the average. So, your boss is taking the long view that the specific
performance degradation isn't going to make enough of a difference to
outweigh the improvement in readability that CFSWITCH is providing in this
case. When you upgrade to CF8, this long view is arguably justified, isn't
it?

> I was waiting for that. :)

Well, given what little I knew about your application, it was the obvious
answer. I agree that it may not be the appropriate choice for your
application, though.

ColdFusion 7 MX - Oracle Stored Proc Calls

2007-11-26 Thread Mike Garner
We've been experiencing this issue for some time and I thought I'd throw it out
there to see if anyone else has had this problem.

When a user logs into our site, we call an Oracle stored proc, which validates
the login, and if success inserts an audit record. Occasionally we are seeing
that ColdFusion is issuing the stored proc call twice for a single transaction
and have verified it is not due to multiple clicks on the login button. We
have noticed similar behavior in submitting a registation type form where a
user is created. The issue goes away if we remove the stored proc call and use
cfquery's instead to do the insert.

Just curious if there are any known threading issues with CF and Oracle stored
proc calls in Oracle that anyone has come across. We are using the 3.5 jdbc
driver. We allow up to 5 connections, and CF holds the connection. If there's
any additional information I can provide that would be helpful, let me know.

thanks,
Mike

The issue is not whether cfif is faster than cfswitch, since it easily could
be. And clearly you should use whatever meets your needs, so wanting to use
the faster of the two is not a crazy thing to want. The point is that until
you test the code under the actual target load, this simple iterative test
is virtually meaningless.

Maybe it's a permissions problem on that directory? I would just put it in

I am quite certain that the vast majority of CF programmers are either
unaware of or uninterested in this list.

You had very good things to say about general performance tuning.
Unfortunately my reply to Sean was specifically in the context of the
original thread so general performance tuning tips were a little
immaterial.

> And, of course, the specific numbers you quoted to Sean were from your
> iterative test. I think it's perfectly OK to critique the process by

While the
comparison is less dramatic the cfswitch is still a full second slower
which is significant enough to me not to use it in this specific
situation. (47 ms / 1141 ms)
My CIO has requested that the average page load time in our app be 3
seconds or less. Now I am being told to burn 1/3 of that time purely
because a switch is more readable and it would be "dumb" to use a
conditional structure known to be faster in CF7. Personally I think
that advice stinks. :)

> I would recommend that you investigate doing that conditional
processing > > in a stored procedure if you can.

I was waiting for that. :) What I am working on happens to be the
interface for a generic reporting tool where we define dynamic criteria
and write custom SQL in a proc for each report. It's very handy because
only the SQL required to produce the results is all that's necessary to
build a new report. The CF code in question displays results in a
dynamic way formatting each value and aligning it with appropriate HTML
etc as necessary based on the meta data available from the result set
and the column types. I am always open to suggestions, but I would hard
hardly call it the job of my SQL server to apply formatting and HTML to
my data for obvious reasons-- the largest of which would be separation
of data layer from display layer. Of course I could write an
intermediate and generic proc which would format the result set before
handing it to ColdFusion, but that would take more obfuscated dynamic
SQL than I care to deal with.
I would only resort to another language if what I wanted could not be
accomplished quickly and easily in ColdFusion 7, and in this case it
can-- with the cfif tag. :)

RE: image effects

2007-11-26 Thread Rick Faircloth
Hi, Todd...

My remarks weren't meant to be a knock on Pete as much to express
my surpise that someone with something to sell to the CF community
as a whole, wouldn't be on every major list.

I know this list is not the be all and end all of the CF community,
but, if I had something to sell, I'd at least be a subscriber and
minimal participant.

But, I won't judge his participation. He may be way too busy with
other parts of the community and just can't afford the time... (or space
in his inbox!)

Anyway, he does need some marketing guidance if he's serious about
selling that component.

I'm not really interested enough in the product to contact Pete.
He's probably aware of the issues anyway.

I have no idea what goes on in the crazy world of shared hosting, and I
don't want to know. I do know that, generally, security is not the highest
priority in a shared hosting environment. I think that the presumption is,
if you're using shared hosting, security is not all that important to you.
If it is, you should probably reconsider what you're doing.

Hey guys...

Have any of you seen some sort of image manipulator for Flex? I'm just
looking for really basic stuff like scaling and rotating (then saving). I
have code for Javascript that does all of this, but a client wants to use
Flash. So I want to show him a Flex version and a JS version and let him
pick.

I doubt you'll find any Flex 2 book that has any significant CF stuff,
because there isn't all that much to say about CF in a Flex book. Any Flex 2
book will cover the basics of AS3. There are a couple of books about AS3
available now from O'Reilly.

What exactly do you mean?

If you want to post data from the browser to a CFC function directly,
instead of posting to a CFM that invokes a function, yes, you have to put
the CFC path in the form action. But that's not what most people do.
Instead, they post to a CFM, and that CFM does whatever you want it to do;
this could of course include calling functions, invoking CFCs, etc.

Coldfusion 8 & JDBC Driver ?

2007-11-26 Thread Richard Giles
We have recently built a new Linux Intranet server with Coldfusion 8 on it, but
i am having problems with our Informix JDBC Driver on it.

I have unpacked the driver to the server to the following path -
/opt/Informix_JDBC_Driver_310/lib/ifxjdbc.jar

I have then included that path in the administrator as the - ColdFusion Class
Path under the Java and JVM section.

Then if i try to create a data source using the Informix driver - details as
follows

---
name = Arista

JDBC URL = jdbc:informix-sqli://[my server]:1526/arista:informixserver=online

Driver Class = com.informix.jdbc.IfxDriver

Driver Name = informix_v310

+ username & password info !

---

i just get an error -

Connection verification failed for data source: Arista
java.sql.SQLException: Can't load driver
java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: Can't load driver
java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

Anyone know why this is happing or how to fix it, as it is doing my head in !

the driver (and same details) work fine with Coldfusion 7, but not with 8 !
Have installed the hotfix for Coldfusion 8 too but the problem remains !!

Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply.

Aren't there the same security risks when using SQL Server Management Studio

2007-11-26 Thread Peter Shaw
Thanks for that Jaime, I can see how your idea would work.

In this case, as a single search result (user profile) is made up of both
database records and files it would be great if they could be 'linked' so that
Verity could calculate the relevance for a single user based on the contents of
both their database *and* their optional attached document.

With your method, passing a userID in a custom field when we index each
resource for a user would then allow us to'add up' results for the same user
from different sources in our results set - which might be some kind of
solution. Seems clunky though.

The amount of text in the attached documents isn't huge and is stored in
attached file form as a matter of convenience. Could the text be stripped out
from the documents and added to a database field. Allowing us to index all
information for searching with a single 'key'.

RE: Combine Documents and Databse Records in a Verity Index

2007-11-26 Thread Jaime Metcher
Peter,

It's certainly possible. The key is to use multiple CFINDEX tags to build
the collection. When you execute a search, you then need to do some sort of
parsing on the result query to determine how to build the link to the
appropriate resource.

With the use of the custom fields available in Verity, we've successfully
integrated half-a-dozen different database tables and 2-3 file system trees
into the one collection. For example, we might have a website with a
calendar system, a library of FAQs and a document library. Depending on the
contents of the search query, a line in the list of search hits might link
to a calendar event, a particular FAQ, a document or just a plain old web
page.

Combine Documents and Databse Records in a Verity Index

2007-11-26 Thread Peter Shaw
We're exploring Verity to use on a new project. Our user profiles are made up
of several database fields and an optional uploaded document (word / pdf). Is
it possible to combine both file and database data in a Verity index so that we
can search both with a single CF_Search? Ideally we only want to get one ranked
result set back to work with.

Our work around would be to create two collections, one for files, one for
database records and merge the two results sets - but this seems an inferior
path.

Showing dynamic data in two side by side groups

2007-11-26 Thread Ali Majdzadeh
Hi:
I'm trying to make a show dynamic data (dynamic table) using dw/cf8. I works
fine but it shows data down the page while I need them in two side by side
groups (columns). I write down the code :

SELECT ID, firstName, lastName, email
FROM Membership

First Name
Last Name
Email

  #members.firstName#
  #members.lastName#
  #members.email#

I found a DW extension after some googling made by Tom Muck named
Horizontal/Vertical Looper which does the job but it is for php/sql not CF. Can
you please help me find out a way to show dynamic data in two groups instead of
one that goes down the page using CF8? Please?
Thanks
