ACT! Database to GoDaddy Hosting
I know this is a wacky question, but I have a client who's running a home business using ACT! Contact Manager (SQL Server DB in background) and wants to get his data up onto his ColdFusion enabled GoDaddy site. Before I tell him that's crazy and to be realistic about the data, I wanted to ask... Is something like this even possible? Can a hosted web service contact a local database? Particularly one that's in someone's home via DSL? If not directly would an indirect method (i.e. WDDX, etc.) be viable? I'd certainly like to help him out, but I want to be sure I know where to draw the line here. Any help/insight/information is appreciated. Thanks! re: ACT! Database to GoDaddy Hosting
Not viable at all. If the backend is SQL Server, though, you could the other way around: host the SQL database with a data provider and have the ACT! client connect over ODBC. ~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want? Re: ACT! Database to GoDaddy Hosting
His CF-enabled site needs to be able to consistently access SQL Server, which in theory is possible even with SQL located on his own machine at home. In practice however, it's usually not possible to host your database on a home computer because of a variety of issues like non-static IP addresses (which also prevents DNS resolution), etc. If he wants to just have his ACT database on the hosted server though, I believe that's a possibility. I remember reading about a web-based version of ACT from the vendor. I would contact them and find out if they support migrating to the web version of their software. If so I think they're likely to have the easiest instructions for doing that. Otherwise it is possible to transfer the data up from the local database - In the past I've done it with Data Transformation Services (DTS) but you could write a script to do it with WDDX if that's not working for you. The other problem is going to be that once the data is up, he'll have 2 coppies of the database. So he'll either have to stop using his local copy, or you'll have to figure out a way that he can sync the 2 databases. In theory DTS used to do that I think, but I've never used it for that personally. -- s. isaac dealey ^ new epoch isn't it time for a change? ph: 817.385.0301 http://onTap.riaforge.org/blog ~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want? Microsoft Velocity
It looks to me like Microsoft's caching project called Velocity is still in development (beta?) ... Does anyone know if there have been attempts to use Velocity with ColdFusion and/or Java yet? I discovered it while looking for information about how to install memcached on a 64-bit windows server, which appears to be impossible at present. Enabling debug outout without access to administrator?
I'm having some difficulty with some code that's on a web host's servers. Accessing the CF Administrator to enable debug output isn't an option. Is there any way of enabling debug output for a single remote IP address without having access to CF administrator? Thanks, Pete ~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want? Re: flex2gateway randomly unresponsive
Shot in the dark here, but I have seen this when I start CF on the console. It's nice to see all the fun AMF chatter output shoot across the screen but if you push alot of data around Flex pauses and appears to be unresponsive while it finishes writing it all to the screen. Starting CF as a service instead makes this stop happening. Alternately - I think you could probably look for and change the console's debug level. -Cameron On Sat, Aug 29, 2009 at 6:46 PM, Nick Waltersnickneckthepir...@gmail.com wrote: We've encountered an error with Flex 3 ColdFusion 8 where the /flex2gateway URL just randomly went unresponsive. Not returning errors, nothing written in any logs anywhere, just would not pick up the phone. Trying to load it in a browser just caused the browser to sit there at Waiting for [domain]..., while the Flex apps would just sit until giving up with Channel.Connect.Failed error NetConnection.Call.Failed. Restarting the CF service resolved the problem, but obviously that is a highly undesirable course of action on a production server. Re: Enabling debug outout without access to administrator?
If you have the admin credentials but not mapped access to the administrator you can use the Admin API ( http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/8/htmldocs/help.html?content=basiconfig_37.html ) to modify the debugging IPs and settings. But if not the real solution is to contact whoever's server you're using and have them enable your IP. P.S. It's a lot more fun to develop on developer edition off of your workstation and do your debugging that way. .htaccess and ColdFusion
I'd like to be able to release my web sites (all using shared hosting) by version; what I mean by this is, say I have the current version of the site in directory /V1/, and a new version of the site in directory /V2/. I would then have a complete copy of each version of the site in the appropriate directory, that way, if anything bad happened, I could easily roll back. My web host told me that I can accomplish this by using a .htaccess file; this is on IIS using the ColdFusion Applicaiton server, with the .htaccess duties being handled by Microonovaehttp://micronovae.com/ModRewrite/ModRewrite.html. So, I set up an .htaccess file with the following contents: # RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} www.wherever.com RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/V1/ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /V1/$1 [L] # RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} beta.wherever.com RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/V2/ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /V2/$1 [L] # This does indeed redirect to code in the /V1/ folder, but the problem I am having is that I am using a number of server side includes with an absolute path to root, i.e.: cfinclude template=/extensions/inc/udf_lib.cfm The problem is, it seems to be looking at the REAL root of the server, i.e. the directory that also contains the /v1/ and /v2/ directories. This doesn't make sense to me, as it seems like of .htaccess is doing its job the way is should, it would automatically look for /v1/extensions/inc/udf_lib.cfm Am I expecting too much out of .htaccess? Or do I simply not have my .htaccess file written correctly? Thanks, Pete ~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want? Re: Enabling debug outout without access to administrator?
David, I do use debug output on my workstation, and the site works fine there. However, it's having problems on a hosted server, and this is why I need the debug info.
