RE: video gallery / audio gallery?
I'm a newbie, nobie, better yet tried-to-be user of Flash, so are you saying I should just import the movie file into flash, save it as a .swf file then configure the xml to pull in the .swf file instead of the .jpg files? Re: OT: newbie FB5? or newbie FB6
Well, what about invoking functions from within the circuit.xml file. Again, I am thinking about upgrading the framework that I use (a modified fusebox framework). FB5 looks good but I wanted to move away from the "act_add_member.cfm" and "qry_list_member.cfm" methodology which seperates database calls to the same entity into two files; to a methodology that puts all "member" database request in one file with dmany functions. In other words, a "member" cfc file. I am concerned that fusebox does not support nor leverage the value of .cfc objects. -- Original Message -- From: "J.J. OT: newbie FB5? or newbie FB6
I stopped using fusebox once FB3 was implement. It just got a little to complex for me. However I stuck with the basic concepts of fuses and circuites. My circuit files are still basically one big cfswitch / cfcase tag. I am considering moveing to FB5. It seems attractive becuase the Fusebox Framework appears to be blackbox and it seems that I don't need to ticker with any non-value added details. I am also attracted to the concept of converting my cfswitch structure to a nice circuit.xml file. Furthermore the dot notation for the fuseaction request is very appealing; now my "index.cfm?action= browseFirm&perform=showService List" can be replaced with "index.cfm?fuseacti on=browseFirm. showServiceList" Cool. RE: MySQL dead too? THE SKY IS FALLING -- oh wait, just a *another* set of lame articles
I read an article in ComputerWorld that talked about Microsoft's accusation of patent infringment by many opensource technologies. The article went on to say that it's just part of the Microsoft's competitive practice to put fear in the hearts of open-source technologies and those that adopt open-source technologies. If this is the case, I'm sure that Public Relations Departments are putting pressure on the Magazines to knock certain technologies. Microsoft's probably spends 100's of Millions on Ad Space in InfoWorld, ComputerWorld, CIO etc. Surely these Magazines want to protect these ad dollars. -- Original Message -- From: "Billy Cox" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: cf-talk@houseoffusion.com Date: Tue, 29 May 2007 08:40:47 -0500 > >A little perspective... > >Journalists make their money by writing about topics that people will read. >Two topics are especially reliable eyeball magnets for manager-types whose >business philosophy reflects whatever magazine article they read last week. > >1. In my applications, I query the database to setup my entire navigation systems (an array of structures) then I store it in the application scope. I also store DSN information in application scope. In some frameworks, information is pulled from an XML configuration file. Fusebox has these abstract circuits that I think are stored in the application scope. I am not sure what Mach-II stores in the application scope upon application initiation. Re: Which Framework do you use... (if any)
You will have a hard time convincing me that one methodology is better than another. You can not separate the methodology from the developer's (individuals and development shops) acquired skills, preferences, and other best practices. I bet there are few people who use any one of these methodologies exclusively or with out some sort of customization. It would be helpful however to compare how each framework handles common functions for example. I break my applications up in to a Model, View, Controller files. Model files (.cfm or.cfc) handle my database interactions particularly my CRUD functions. I'm split as to whether i should develop my Model files and .cfc's or .cfm and call them when I need them. View files are responsible for display side. I wrap display code (list, forms etc) with functions and cfsavecontent. Controller files are responsible for controlling user request and I use a modified fusebox approach. For example index.cfm?action = dothis. The index file is basically a From a framework perspective, I would be interesting in knowing: 1). What framework best manages variable scoping (what should go into the application scope, what should go into request scope etc) 2). What framework leverages the best practices for setting up and integrating "Model" level functionality. (Transfer, Reactor ect) 3). What framework leverages the best practices for structuring and calling "View" or "display" oriented functionality. 4). What framework leverages the best practices for organizing "Controller Files" 5). What framework leverages the best library of UDF's for extending coldfusion's data, formatting, scheduling, etc functions. Basically each framework works better on one level or another but fall short of others. I would like to see a move towards "FRAMEWORK SEGMENTATION" for example a strong framework for handling "Model" level functions in a way that allows me to use something else for handling my "View" components. Likewise a strong and flexible "View" framework (including integrated gui css) the leverages Ajax and allows for one to output "smart" list, web 2.0 forms, etc. Finally, a framework that effectively handles "application" specific variables, what types of application variables should be stored in what scope and in what form (database, .txt file, xml etc) For example most store DSN in the application scope. I also store my navigation system in the application scope. -- Original Message -- From: "Robertson-Ravo, Neil (RX)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: cf-talk@houseoffusion.com Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2007 16:27:27 +0100 > >A good post, though I thought ORM stood for Object Relational/ship Mapping > > ~| Upgrade to Adobe ColdFusion MX7 The most significant release in over 10 years. Eric if I was not comitted, I would use your approach. It doesn't cost much and i think it's just alot easier to back out of. However, everything depends of the scope and the size of your project. Jochem I almost directed this post to you specifically. You have got to been some sort of "black-belt" database guru. >There is no such thing. >An RDS plugin ships with Flex Builder 2, that you can use with Eclipse 3.1 - >do you mean that ? > Yes this is exactly what I mean. Flex Builder 2 is built on Enclipse. When you launch Flex Builder you'll see that it looks just like Eclipse. The RDS / Coldfusion Extensions that Flex Builder uses are some what independent and you can "plug" them into CFEclipse. It's a fantastic plug-in and it seems to be the best thing since cfeclipse itself. I just can't get the damn thing to work. I spent a whole day messing around with this. I upgraded my development version of cfmx from 6 to 7. I had to change my jdbc drivers from mysql 5 back to mysql 3.01 even though I using mysql 5. Did all of this just to get the RDS plug-in to work and it still doesn't work. I delete the files but it still behaves like there there. I disable the plug in and can't figure out how to enable. The test connection works but the acutal connection fails. Now I just want to remove the plugin and try to reinstall it but I can even do that. ~| Create robust enterprise, web RIAs. RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
As I've said or implied for more than 3 years on this list. COLDFUSION NEEDS A NEW OWNER. Point Blank. I rate there management of the product line over the last few years as an B. It's clear that there are way more Macromedia Guys in the Board Rooms and server as Business Unit Directors. I still now people running on off Coldfusion 4.5 and 5.0. That's totally Macromedias Fault and RIA has been around for a minute. They promised that CF developers will have easier tools to integrate with Flash but what did we get. Flex. I still have to learn Flash to build any kind of stunning RIA. Now hear we are more than 3 years after the big RIA push. I said on this list that CF developers would deliver the RIA revolution before the Flash "desigerners" and flash "animators". And I was right. If RIA delivered what they thought they would not be Adobe now. Cool tools, steap learning curves, and little skills are transferable. Lets face it the number of the shelf cfc components that work with flash is really, really slim compare to the old Allair Exchange site. Just my 2 cent. They probably want dump. The better than to do is to sell the product to small more focused organization. On list, so many times we discussed managemente and strategy and Macromedia. For a long time I felt that there product line was way to diverse. FWD: Chinese Character Problem, (Part 1)
Just when I think I have the problem solved. I'm working on a site that has a little Chinese Characters. I having problems on multiple fronts. GETTING DATA IN Well I have a content management system and in the application.cfm page i have content that looks like this This was because CFMX 6 had some character set issues (MS Access). I was getting some very funny symbols but the above code cleared in up. This is obvious the problem with using the CMS to add content to the database because the content type has has to support chinese characters, particular charset="gb2312". Sense it's not a lot of content, I just copy the chinese characters from the a word document and paste directely into the datbase. HOWEVER, MS Word uses a different character set. So when I copy the text from MS Word, and Paste into Database, funny symbols again. Any Advice Dwayne ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application.
