Re: HELP! with writing documentation.

2002-09-16 Thread John Innit

Actually we are getting the documentation written for us, and as we have
never done this before we want to make sure we get it done properly. The
docs should be sufficient in that a party developer would quickly get an
understanding of our site. For example some of the basic things we are
documenting include the database schema, list of tags used, basic
functionality's and work flows. I'm just looking for general advice on
things we should make sure are covered in the docs!!

Help please!! - Adding Email Alert functionality to a site

2002-09-30 Thread John Innit

We've been asked to add email alert functionality to a clients web site.

The client is a recruitment company and wants to maintain a list of
prospective candidates that can be automatically alerted when the company
has new job openings. The clients wants to be able to manually add / remove
names to the email list and to enable new job seekers to add themselves or
modify their settings through their web site.

The settings will be quite simple, a new job seeker can specify to receive
alerts for

1) Software development jobs
2) Management jobs
3) all jobs

When the recruitment company has a new job requirement they will type it
up, assign it to a category, and then have an option to send it out to all
the prospective job seekers who have requested for alerts in that category.
Before the emails are sent out the company wants a list of all the
recipients so that they can manually delete or add people from the list
before the mailing is kicked off.

I realize this is a simple project and there are numerous ways to get this
done. What I'm looking are suggestions on how to get this done very quickly
( 2 week time line) I also want to know if there is an existing product we
can buy which with some customization can achieve this for us. Would love
to receive recommendations, suggestions or even proposals if you have a
fast solution.

Thanks.

Optimal settings for LIMIT SIMULTANEOUS REQUESTS

2002-04-23 Thread John Innit

Our web server is a P3 500 with 512KB RAM running WIN2K/ IIS & CF 4.5.1
our DB server is also a P3 500 with 512KB RAM running WIN2K and SQL SERVER 2000
I've read the rule of thumb for the limit simultaneous requests should be
2x or 3x the number of processors on the box, as we have 1 processor on our
web server does this mean our setting should be only 2 simultaneous
requests??? This seems frighteningly low to me!! currently we have it set
to 15. - am I missing something here ?

Also we have our server settings to restart after 10 unresponsive requests
- any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Bud, thanks for your response. So you've set your simultaneous requests
limit to 50 and your performance is fine and you've minimized your

Upgrade to dual processor - reinstall WIN2K OS or NOT

2002-04-23 Thread John Innit

There seems to be 3 different views on whether or not you need to reinstall
win2k server after upgrading to a dual processor.

1) You MUST reinstall WIN2K when you add another CPU

2) You do not need to reinstall, you just need to adjust a setting in
device manager

3) You do not need to reinstall but you must do a parallel
install of the OS on the machine and copy over some files as specified or
us a program called
utomp.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q142660

The puzzling thing is that each piece of advice was given to me by someone
who said he was 100% certain and had done this many times...

I'm confused. Can anyone help clarify this for. The key point is that I'm
using WIN2K server and NOT WinNT 4.0

Thanks.

Performance boost with Upgrade to dual processor ??

2002-04-23 Thread John Innit

Running a IIS 5.0 / WIN2K Server and CF 4.5.1 on a P3 500 with 512KB RAM,
our DB server is also a P3 500 with 512KB RAM running WIN2K and SQL SERVER
2000.

I'm thinking of upgrading to dual processors (another P3 500) on both the
web server and DB server and want to know if there is any way in which I
can maximize the performance boost. I heard that the extra processor may or
may not boost CF the web server performance, and alot depends on how the
application is designed. Is this true ? Is there any way I can optimize my
application and CF server to harness the extra benefits of the new processor?

I heard the the SQL server will definitely see a performance boost but the
CF server may or may not depending on how it was designed...

any suggestions.

Thanks.

Add Message Forum + Existing user database

2002-05-12 Thread John Innit

We're adding a message forum to our site, and one of the key criteria in
the consideration of different packages is the ability for the forum
software to recognize our existing registered users (~1) stored is our
MS SQL 2000 database. Basically registered users just need to enter their
existing userid and password whereas new users will need to register prior
to posting.

Is this functionality standard on most message forum software packages?

The front runner is my consideration is SNITZ.

Anyone comments.

Thanks a bundle.

What do you use to send out HTML NEWSLETTERS from your site

2002-05-16 Thread John Innit

We're building an application to send out HTML email newsletters, the
application needs to integrate with our SQL database for personalization
and needs to support HTML templates for each newsletter, as the basic
format and layout of each email stays the same and we just replace the
content which consists of text.

We've tried using the CF_HTMLAREA and CF_ActivEdit tags as WYSIWYG editors
for entering the text into the templates but have found that this bloats up
the HTML and it ends up large and clunky - not really good for email!!.
We're also having problems getting the text to display properly, word
wraps, line spacing etc.

This effort is getting frustrating.

There must be a ton of ways to effectively send out and manage hi quality
HTML emails from our site (I get tons of well composed spam every day) and
it seems like we're trying to reinvent the wheel when the garage is just
next door!!

Can anyone help in recommending a good product or service or source code or
even just an idea or suggestion.

Thanks for your time.

indexing a MS Word document

2002-05-19 Thread John Innit

I'm building a on-line recruitment application that will allow people to
upload their resumes as .doc attachments.

We need to index the text in the document for fast searching, be able to do
word counts (for example how many occurrences of "java") and we need to be
able to store the resume text as a field in our SQL database.

Can we use verity for this? Anyone have any suggestions on a good way to
acheivce

Thanks.

CFGRID - Good alternatives?

2002-05-28 Thread John Innit

Anyone have any bad or good experiences with CFGRID?

We use CFGRID with with CF 4.5.1 and are upgrading to CF 5.0 - heard there
may be some compatibility issues.

Any good replacements for CFGRID ?

Thanks.
