Re: OT: MM Suprises Wall Street - Can more be done?

2003-01-24 Thread S V
One of the things that MM finally did was offer a developer version of the
server,( many people still do not know this). While this is great it came in
late in the game. Though there are other free software out there, CF is
easier to build in . The fact that it works under Websphere and Weblogic
is great, but this offer seems to be under played too. We can continue to
paint and sell a good story here, but it takes marketing muscle and $$ to
get it to a verticle playing field - to get it over the hump...

= = = Original message = = =

The fact that CF is too easy also means there are a lot of CF apps out
there that are not done properly--cf is easy to do, not always easy to do
right. We've run into this problem a lot where clients have seen very
poorly performing CF apps written by non-programmers.

Run into the same problem with MS Access. Easy to do. Hard to do right.

My $0.02.

Re: OT: MM Suprises Wall Street - Can more be done?

2003-01-24 Thread S V
Well great, but I see Asp.net creaping up and quickly too. As a product is
seems to be more widely accepted and possibly will eclipse JSP/JAVA and
others in a very short time. My question is while MM can dump more into
marketing and hype the product, but what can the community do to help. It
seems that every where I go , clients want to do in in ASP/ASP.Net, while CF
gets less respect. It seems to me that CF is not as ubiquitous as
ASP/ASP.Net. It would be nice to see CF get the press coverage more
frequently .. Any ideas???

= = = Original message = = =

Thanks, Howard! I'm glad you like what we've built here. I'd like to add
that
Michael works exceptionally hard on these lists, making sure they run fast
and
well. He deserves much of the credit.

I'm happy to see some recognition in the news of what Macromedia has been
doing.
Macromedia has been working very hard lately to advance ColdFusion and to be
more communicative with the developer community in general, and I'm sure it
has
helped. Thanks, Christian, for all the hard work you and others at
Macromedia
are doing!

Re: building cert tests (WAS Re: certification experiences/plans?)

2003-01-07 Thread S V
It really goes to show that taking tests do not insure that the candidate is
knowledgable in area of expertise that they are claiming. Some people are
just bad test takers, for example. Others ACE tests and memorize every
imaginable syntax. I often find that the best way to assertain knowledge is
to "just talk tech". I recently interviewed someone who did that, and was
certified. But when asked hypothetical problem solving questions, he could
not deliver. Book smart but inexperienced, it is possible that this person
may be able to produce good code. But I was not convinced.

= = = Original message = = =

That's an excellent point -- and one we did a variation of:

I'm giving candidates a simple concept, but poorly written SQL stored proc
actually build by the current reporting team and asking them what they think
of it and how'd they'd improve it.

Again, goes to show essay questions (effectively) are much better than ABCDE
or true/false.

RE: How to use JSP in CFMX Professional vs Blue Dragon

2002-08-25 Thread S V

It may miss all of that but there is a whole lot more to be gained from Blue
Dragons environment (J2EE , JSP, ) that CFMX Professional may not
provide.

= = = Original message = = =

>So what major new constructs besides CFC are there in CFMX vs CF5? I

>differences in the language that allows us to do things that we couldn't
>do before? Is CFCs it?

There's lots of new stuff, in addition to CFCs. Here's some of those things
in no particular order:

- user-defined functions with the full power of CFML, using CFFUNCTION,
- the ability to override HTML tags with custom logic using CFIMPORT,
- the ability to interact with Java in many ways - JSPs and servlets, JSP
tag libraries via CFIMPORT, classes in general through CFOBJECT or
CreateObject,
- the ability to consume web services using CFINVOKE,
- decent graphing with CFCHART,
- better support for i18n (due mostly to Paul Hastings' constant nagging
during the beta, I think),
- sensible concurrency handling (CFLOCK no longer necessary to keep your
server from crashing)
- built-in XML parsing,
- CFLOGIN authentication stuff,
- resource security (replacing the annoying Siteminder Advanced Security),
. and much, much more!

How to use JSP in CFMX Professional

2002-08-22 Thread S V

We are using CFMX professional, and rudely discovered that we cannot develop
JSP unless we upgrade to Enterprise. Is there any way to mix seperately .cfm
and .jsp where one submits to the other, within CFMX professional?? What
other alternatives are there?

Getting the Searched result words from Verity

2002-07-16 Thread S V

I am running a search in verity and would like to bold or hilight the
"found" criteria.

For example if I search for "bat" in my result set i would highlight
wherever "bat" existed.
However, when using b?t, I would like highlight or bold all the
returned "searched " words like "bat, but,bot..." etc. It seems to be that
there ought to be a return list from the verity engine. Is there a way to
get this information from the verity search engine? Has anyone had to do
something similar like this before??

CFDirectory Network Drive - Still does not work!

2002-04-18 Thread S V

OK, I am logged in as Cfusion/bob ( with sys admin prevlidges) to the CF
Server, CF Service is changed from LocalSystem to start up thru CFusion/bob
login. Thru Windows Explorer I have a UNC where I can see the remote drive
and directories (as \\xyz), But still CF server cannot see the or recognize
the remote drive on a cffile or cfdirectory thru UNC or any other way. What
am I doing wrong, Is there anything else I can try. Also,
why is it that when creating a mapping thru CF Administrator, and clicking
on the browse button, I only see local drives and not remote drives?

I think Christopher is correct - go with UNC file descriptions.

You are still going to have an issue with server permissions (the Cold
Fusion Server user still needs to have access right to the
server/drives/directories you are looking towards.)

To expand, UNC descriptions would look like:

\\StagingServer\E\Archive\January\doc1.htm

Rather than the typical mapping:

m:\Archive\January\doc1.htm

Jerry Johnson

 >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/18/02 11:53AM >>>
keep in mind that drives are mapped on an account-by-account basis. so, if
i'm a user on your machine, the path you have mapped to M:\ in your account
is NOT accessible by me.

that being said, the CF service runs as LocalSystem, by default. this
account will NOT have any mapped drives (if memory serves). if you've
changed that, the user under which CF runs must have the drive mapped in
THAT profile.

more elegant solution: use a UNC for CFFILE and CFDIRECTORY.

Subject: CFDirectory Network Drive - Help

I am using CF 4.5 with IIS 4. Despite successfully making a mapping to a
drive on another machine thru "Mapping a drive", the cold fusion server
seems unable to see this server when I try to browse in the "Mapping"
section of Cold Fusion Administrator.

I can see this drive thru Windows explorer or Command prompt, But CF is
unable to do so. This means that CFDirectory or CFFile cannot work. Is there
anything that I have to do , or install or setup to get this connection to
work? Any help or direction is appreiciated!

Thanks

HELP! IIS 5 and Access with Netscape browser 4.75

2001-10-18 Thread S V

I have removed Anonymous access in IIS5 thru Directory Security tab for each
website. Now accessing thru IE requires NT authentication, which is great
and I connect; But when I use Netscape 4.75 it does not accept the NT
login/pwd. It seems to me that Netscape is not allowing or screwing up
something, while IE has no such problem.

Is there any setup on the browser that is required so that a netscape
browser can access the website? I want to avoid upgrading to an newer
version of Netscape browser.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I don't know if this is the answer, but you don't have a VALUE="back" on
your back button. Try putting that in. You have it on
your continue button.
