RE: Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
Something to be aware of when running anti-virus program updates on a server... We had to reduce the frequency of updates when we discovered that the updates would cause the virus scanning service to restart each time. This would deny any incoming/outgoing requests to/from the server, and would drop the connections to our database server while the service restarted. Anyone completing a transaction at that time would lose their session data. ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. Re: Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
Speaking personally, I have been really happy with F-Prot. It costs I think $2 per year to license a computer (you have to purchase a minimum license count that takes the cost to $50... but bottom line is you can license an office-full of systems for fifty bucks a year where Norton et al wants a LOT more. Also F-Prot can schedule updates hourly or even more tightly I think. Hourly checks aren't too frequent in this era. Surprised no one has mentioned ClamAV, which is free and open source. The ClamWin gui seems to work nicely. No idea how effective it is relative to other things though. Still its free. Clam is running on my mail server (checking incoming mail) and F-Prot on my desktop. I pull mail from different places too, but I funnel it to my mail server, where a Bayesian+ gateway can have its way with it. Then Thunderbird's antispam filters get to do their thing and I see maybe 1-5 spams per week. Zero virii ever. .. -- --mattRobertson-- Janitor, MSB Web Systems mysecretbase.com ~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:204484 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

There are plenty of Windows client-side spam filters, and as several people have mentioned, the Outlook 2003 filter works pretty well if you update it. You can certainly run SpamAssassin on Windows: http://www.openhandhome.com/howtosa.html > In summary, I like client side spam and virus filtering and I > find the tools on OS X and Linux to be in greater abundance > and more powerful. > You're also less likely to get infected with a virus without > having to buy, install, and maintain a bunch of other programs. Well, sure. The vast majority of viruses are written to work on Windows, and there are plenty of flaws with application integration, user rights, etc in Windows. But the fact is, it's very easy to avoid virus infections and spyware on Windows without buying, installing or maintaining anything, so using that as your sole justification for switching to another operating system (or, even worse, spending good money on another computer) is pretty thin. > That's how it fits into this. A partial workaround would be to use fetchmail to consolidate email from all your accounts to one server (and then split it out using procmail again). I am saying partial workaround because that still does't allow you to do one crucial thing: reject instead of delete email. SMTP is typically a handshake between the servers, then they exchange some message headers and then the message DATA. Once the receiving server sends a OK in response to the DATA, it accepts full responsibility for that message. Any false positives in the virus / spam filtering after that are the responsibility of the postmaster. A postmaster can hardly send a notification about every filtered message because usually the from address of spam is faked (postmasters that do so should be executed), but if he doesn't he takes full responsibility. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The solution is to filter even earlier, before sending the OK to the sending server. That effectively makes your problem the problem of the sender: the sender gets an error and can choose to retry or not (spam zombies never bother). Only if you use fetchmail you have already accepted the email (it has been accepted on your behalf), so you again have the false positives problem. And if you are really evil, you will use OpenBSDs pf/spamd to make life as miserable as possible on the sender :-) Jochem (from his brand new Linux desktop) ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. I'm basing it about 23 years of fixing computers (which over the last eight years or so has turned into mostly fighting viruses.) I'm a better tech than a programmer, and trust me, I've spent a huge amount of time testing virus protection options. Please read my post again, and notice that: 1)I didn't recommend Norton over NOD32. 2)I stated my statements were based on third party reviews. In my shop, I scan between five and ten computers a day - I use a combination of NOD32, FProt, NOD32, Trend, Norton, AVPersonal, and Sophos. Of these, NOD32 does the best job in the speed and detection department. For about six months, we ran AVG in the mix to see how it would do. We ran it for awhile as the first scanner (and the others consistently found viruses it missed) and then we ran it as the last scanner (where it consistently found nothing, proving it added nothing to the mix.) We pulled it as not being worth the time. I'm glad you think it's working for you, but I'll bet that if you brought your machine to our shop, we'd find viruses you didn't know you had - I see this happen regularly with AVG and Norton users - less so with NOD32 users. Mike: For anti-spam, try the SpamBayes plugin for Outlook. Unlike the Bayesian filters in something like Thunderbird, SB sorts spam into "Junk" and "Possible Junk" folders. That means you virtually never have to worry about false-positives, because anything borderline will fall into the small, easily scanned "Possible" list. -- Roger Benningfield JournURL blog: http://admin.support.journurl.com/ ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
Dave you know my woes i had with windows and during that time I never ever concidered a mac cause I used to use them in the medical fields I worked in and I hated them. It wasn't till katie would bring hers over and I could get right on it and do what I needed without ever even seen OS X, made it pretty easy to linux to the curb, I wont even mention the windows part lol. We'll find out, my stepdad brought a mac g3 home one time and its in moms basememnt so next time I go out there I will set it up 4 her and load OS X and see how long it takes her to be comfy on it, I bet less than a day. " If you're capable of installing an OS - any OS - you're capable of using a computer safely if you want to." I wouldn't say that, after all you can insert OS X or XP and maybe select a few options (like time and time zone and alt language support) and you are done. My 90 yr old granpa did it without help, the time was wrong but everything else was fine :) But yet his puter is always filled with spyware... You'd rock on a mac Dave, you should try one for a day! You won't go back. I don't know about that Dave, the only real getting used to a mac is the buttons on the top left instead of top right. Installing cfm was a pita but the average user wont be doing that, other than that is not to much different (on a mac anyways), Linux was 10X as hard to get used to but OS X was a snap. For the "average" user like my mom, I would dare to say it's easier to learn mac then pc. " I submit to you that it would be easier for most users to learn those three things than to learn a new operating system " if that was true we wouldnt have all these problems on pc because no one would fall for them and they wouldn't matter. " much less install it themselves" installing OS X was quite a bit easier than xp and xp isn't hard. LMFAO x2!! haha I was gunna say the same thing but you know how that send ppl's panties up their bums on here when I say it ;) My advice would be too use as little of ms products as you can and you will be safer and that's not me bashing that's me saying "hey, why don't you seperate your programs from your OS and that will dramaticly reduce the threats" And the ms spyware program seems to really slow systems down (imagine that) and isn't trusting that like using AOL for spam filtering (either you get that or you dont). Re: Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
Mike Computer Associates has a 12-month free trial on their anti-virus software. I posted the how-to on community a couple three weeks back, but it goes something like this -- Assuming you have Windows XP, uninstall the expired virus software. Go into your security center and let it tell you that you don't have any anyvirus software. Say yes, you would like to get some. It's the first link that comes up. I haven't thought about spam in a long while. I converted to gmail and I don't see more than one or two pieces a day, exven though I subscribe to a number of highly spammed usenet lists. You might consider forwarding ? I second the suggestion to go to office update and make sure you've updated the spam filters. It really does help immensely. It's not perfect tho (what is?). Right now it's catching (with no training on my part) about 90% of spam on the "low" setting. I could move it to "High" and catch more but then some real email gets caught and it's easier to delete to uncaught spam than to go through all the caught spam looking for good messages (on low I've never seen a real message get caught). I've also used "IHateSpam" (at www.sunbeltsoftware.com) and it was also very good - it's something like $20 (although you only get a year of updates - then you pay $10 to upgrade). > Are there any good low cost/free/ anti virus measures available? Panda is cheap and seems to work well (there's also a free online scanner from Panda). I'm not sure what you consider "cheap" but personally I just McAfee Internet Security (I was using Norton but hated the fact that you couldn't NOT use their spam filter). It's $70 as a download and includes Firewall, Spam protection, Anti-virus and Privacy services. For the most part it's worked well for me (which is to say that it's crashed less than others - in my experience protection software almost always causes more problems than it solves.) Re: Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
> Are there any good low cost/free/ anti spam measures available? For software solution (free), spamihilator seems pretty good. You can google it. I use a hosted server side solution, www.redcondor.com, which does as good if not better job of any client side solution I've tried. It costs about $1.75/mo per mailbox you want to filter (with discounts available for paying a year in advance). There's nothing to configure on your side -- just change your domain's MX record to point to them and they filter the spam and send it back to your mail server. There's no noticeable delay time. They use filters, not challenge/response, and have a 95%+ success rate screening spam. Though 95% is not the same as 98-99%, the nice thing is that in the 8 months I've been with them, they have never quarantined a false positive. I do a get a small commission for referrals, but I'd recommend them even if I didn't. - Regards, Bob Haroche O n P o i n t S o l u t i o n s www.OnPointSolutions.com ~| Find out how CFTicket can increase your company's customer support efficiency by 100% http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=49 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:204160 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

That is too bad, there are some thing you can do server side that you simply can't do client side (greylisting, milters etc.). What are you running on the server that is under your control? You should at the very least be able to add an antivirus solution to that server. If it is an option to aggregate your email on that server using for instance fetchmail you have at least fixed the antivirus part of the equation. Are you looking for something to integrate into MS Outlook 2003 or to replace it? Exclusively client side or can you add server side solutions too? Any Free/Low cost anti-spam/anti-virus software?
I'm at the point where I have to renew my licenses for my anti-virus software, and my anti-spam is going to have to be renewed soon, so I'm looking for alternatives. Both of them are not really keeping up with the current pace. Are there any good low cost/free/ anti spam measures available? Are there any good low cost/free/ anti virus measures available? I"m using MS Outlook2003 for mail. It has what purports to be anti-spam built in but it's next to useless. It grabs only emails from addresses it knows, and the spammers change their "from" address at random these days. You would rarely get two spams from the same address. Anyway, I'm looking for improvements on my current setup before I go and renew the licenses.
