This is excellent news indeed! Can you imagine Microsoft making even the smallest change in strategy based on the developer community's comments? Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
Hi, I've been sitting in on this list for a few months now, and the hoo-hah about CF5 licensing issues has been the first thread to really draw me in. I began learning ColdFusion just over a year ago when I was employed as a journalist on a website where we were twiddling our thumbs pre-launch and our CF guy was slaving under untold pressure. I learnt enough in a week to be of use to him. Impressed by this (I *never* envisioned myself becoming involved in server-side technologies), I decided to delve further into CF. I now feel confident building relatively secure, fully functional backend site adminstration systems in CF, integrated with frontend output. Most of my 'bread and butter' now comes from corporate clients wanting CF sites built or tweaked; but more importantly to me, I'm able to offer the power of this technology to a number of smaller companies and charities at rates that make CF hosting costs feasible. The shallow learning curve of CF makes the extra cost of hosting a viable option for these smaller organisations - just. Reading the recent thread about CF5 horrified me. Suddenly all the investment I'd made in learning more advanced CF seemed like a waste, and several projects that are very important to me (as well as a lot of business) seemed about to fly out the window. It was encouraging, then, as someone enthusiastically entering into the CF developer community at the very time the Allaire/Macromedia merger is occurring, to see a (relatively) prompt, positive response from MM regarding the reactions on developers mailing lists. Of course I think it would be great if CF was free. I wouldn't have to rely on limited developer hosting accounts for development purposes, and money would be saved all-round. But yeah, I can't see MM going for this. It might pay off if they went for it, but it'd be a risk. On the other hand, it's good they realised they were shooting themselves in the foot by pricing the small- to-middle customers out in favour of ASP or PHP. I really think that CF's shallow learning curve makes this market as important as enterprise customers. Being UK-based is a major factor for me. As bandwidth as so much more expensive outside the US, the extra cost of a non-free server-side technology is much more of an issue. Any drastic hiking of the price will filter down through from ISP's to developers, and back to CF, harming its chances of becoming a reasonable alternative to ASP or PHP. There's a middle way between a free CF Server and one that only big clients can afford. I hope MM are finding it now and follow it through. I feel committed to CF now, and this licensing scare was the first thing to make me question this. I'm hanging in now, as MM's positive response bodes well for the MM-CF developer relationship. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm one CF newbie who is anxious to see CF flourish for all, not just those with money to burn. cheers, - Gyrus [EMAIL PROTECTED] work: http://www.tengai.co.uk/steve/ play: http://www.norlonto.net ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. I just wanted to add my Heartfelt thank you regarding MM listening to this group. When the first notice arrived, I was quite upset, as were a large number of people. We're putting 2 issues of Fusion Authority out tonight to catch up. One issue was almost dedicated to the CF 5 issues. Now we have to do a rewrite on a lot of stuff. Still, it's really great that A/MM listened to the concerns of the community. If anything proves that they are looking out for the future of ColdFusion and ColdFusion developers, this has to be it. Nick, Yes, the discussions on this list were definitely a big part of this decision, and yes, folks should voice their opinions. Macromedia (I really have to get used to saying that) is very committed to ColdFusion - I have been saying that for a while now, and I hope this proves it. --- Ben PS For the record, in the future, I think we can do without the foul language that several list participants felt compelled to spew. Those messages were not forwarded to the decision markers anyway, so they did not effect the decision, and accomplished nothing at all. It shows a lot of us that you really are listening and taking our opinions highly. I am astounded and pleased with your rapid response to the issues at hand. Re: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
Jeff, I'm very happy to see that Macromedia listens to its customers. Thank you. I haven't had the opportunity to check out CF 5 yet, so I don't know what features are planned for the Professional and Enterprise versions. As a very small web host, with maybe 30 domains, one thing that _did_ peak my curiosity was what features would be planned for a Service Provider Edition. I think someone was badly misinformed when they drew up the licensing and pricing for this product, but if indeed there is added value to someone doing shared hosting of CF server, there may well be a place for it. It's obviously too late to suggest significant changes for the CF 5 release, but I had wondered if we'd see some nice site-level management features, including some end-user domain management capabilities. Depending on the power of the management and security features bundled into this product, I could see an appropriate price somewhere between Pro and Enterprise, perhaps the cost of Pro plus 20-30%. Right now, the financial incentive for web hosts is still to use CF Pro over Enterprise for shared hosting. I hope to at least see some of the sand-box security features migrated into Pro, so that it IS a good fit for this environemant, and one that will further the stability and reputation of using CF for small sites. Re: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
A CF-Partners list is being finished as we speak so that the community can have a central location to post to MM. RE: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
I didn't comment on it at the time, but I was intrigued by the suggestion that MM should give CFAS away, and concentrate on productivity products for developers. While a zero price is not what I think would be necessary for CFAS to gain many more developers, a lower price would and would make CFAS more price-competitive with the dark side. I suggest MM should look at this seriously to see if they can convince themselves there is some lower price point at which they'll do as well if not better than they are now. Note that while a lower CFAS is in my interest, having more developers competing is not. RE: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
Jeff Whatcott Director ColdFusion Product Marketing Macromedia [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jeff, Thank you for listening to the concerns of the Cold Fusion community in the coming release of CF5. I know that I, as one amongst many, posted a quick response regarding my fears on how a new multi-site hosting license may affect my participation with Macromedia and the Cold Fusion product. I have long been a somewhat disgruntled user for Macromedia products, having lived through the Drumbeat/Elemental Software purchase (and from that experience never following the upgrade path through Macromedia), and even moving to Adobe's Live Motion to build Flash projects. With that in mind, I have been very (and stressed on the very) pleasantly surprised about the quick, timely, and responsive position Macromedia has moved in after the premature leak of price-structure changes to Cold Fusion this last week. In particular, I was worried about how a vaguely worded Partner Hosting License and the effect it may have on a developer like myself that builds a lot of small, non-commercial (or commercial) web-sites on my own box. I recognize that the Macromedia clarification of the Partner Hosting License clearly removed my immediate worry and concerns. And while that was good enough for protecting my block, there was still concern by other developers. I applaud Macromedia for responding to them as well. In closing I fully support Macromedia approach to stratify the product, and offer advanced multi-site management tools and server protection for higher prices. Indeed, I highly support any activity that scales a product's cost of features and functionality. This, in my mind, subsidizes the small developer community, while delivering premium (and premium as in functionality only required of specialized web hosts, or partner hosts) to premium clients. Cold Fusion Professional and Enterprise remain fully functional and robust packages, with the knowledge that Macromedia will further support and extent the product for specialized, and niche markets - if I ever am in a position to move that way. Again, thank you for your response time, and I look forward to build a better relationship with Macromedia now that I've experienced this weekend. Stephen R. RE: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
Paul, Unfortunate Macromedia doesn't have a million other products to sell where they can turn a profit by giving one big one away for free. They are not really big enough to start playing that kind of game. In truth the cost of the product is justified at it's current price, because Clients are willing to pay it, and since server software is only a small part of the application development budget. Macromedia could never survive on onsee-twosee reduced price products sold to 'loyal' developers. Furthermore a developer shouldn't be burdened with the responsibility of purchasing server app software, ColdFusion Studio ships with a fully functional app server. - Chris !--- Christopher Cortes |Coming Q3 2001: Consultant | Stonebridge Technologies, Inc. | Optimizing ColdFusion Putting Technology To Work | By Visit us at www.sbti.com | Christopher Cortes Ofc: 713.985.6244 cel: 281.235.6100 | www.osborne.com ---! -Original Message- From: Paul Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2001 11:11 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated I didn't comment on it at the time, but I was intrigued by the suggestion that MM should give CFAS away, and concentrate on productivity products for developers. Note that while a lower CFAS is in my interest, having more developers competing is not. So my suggestion is not entirely self-serving... I think I was the earliest (1/16/2001) on this list to announce I was firing up a few FreeBSD/PHP/MySQL boxes in response to the original Allaire/Macromedia announcement. My participation on this list has ebbed since that time though I have read the list as frequently as I have the past years (daily). I would like to have my interests and time budgeting decisions re-focused on CFAS. Here are a few thoughts on what might bring me back ... 1. Perhaps a relatively cheap 'subscription' to a fully functional version of CFAS aimed at the small time, single developer who scripts, maintains, hosts and promotes mutliple client's web sites on a single or small cluster of servers. A CFExpress that would be worth keeping loaded longer than a few hours. 2. Such a subscription would be a semi-annual(?) CD purchase of an updated cfengine comprising the full suite of functions and tags available in any version. It would not comprise RAD tools, server farm utilities, Spectra like management suites, jrun devices, studio/ultradev/etc., versioning control or editing software. All those extras should certainly be available according to interest and budget. Successful software has the characteristic of attaining that lofty goal of being seen as an assumed part of a net capable business's basic facilites. Think of a pyramid - a very wide base of many small guys *USING* CFAS topped by layers of more involved hosters deploying thousands of sites. A pyramid is a most stable constuction and very difficult to tip over. I can envision some layer of the CF pyramid being companies to whom the small guys could outsource services that are beyond the small developers capacity and would call for a more complete collection of tools beyond the basic, core CFAS. Spectra could be reworked so that a small developer who is at the point of turning down new business because of time and management problems can buy large scale site management services from someone in the cf community. Why bother with any of this? It seems that there are many, many small time CF developers who find it easy to find non-Fortune500 customers. In aggregate, there just might be as much activity at the base of the community equal to the sum of the higher-rollers combined cash flow. No one knows as there haven't been any surveys directed at estimating this kind of data. One can only go with one's perceptions and anectdotal experiences. The bottom line is that Macromedia has an opportunity to encompass both ends of the market if they can find a way to keep the entirety of the community active, interested and involved. Making the cfengine as ubiquitously available as possible might be the key to achieving that goal. At least, that's my opinion. hope some may find these comments stimulating ... I'm keeping my CF stuff close, but I need to keep ramping up the fbsd/php solution. Pan ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: Hosting Service Provider Edition Eliminated
Glad to see that Macromedia is still up to its great traditions of a company that really listen to their customers. Thanks Massimo Kevin Lynch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message news:v04220800b712724d63f0 We're definitely listening -- there were excellent points made by this group. We are of course very interested in supporting and growing the ColdFusion community and are very driven by customer feedback, as we are across our product line. I also would like to increase the communication between the ColdFusion team at Macromedia and the community here to avoid misunderstandings -- we'll be working to improve that. In the meantime, let's get back to building great stuff! thanks Kevin ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
