RE: Is WDDX alive well ?

2001-04-15 Thread Dave Watts

I haven't done any new development in it lately, but I regularly
use programs I wrote some time ago.

The pluses: it works well, as advertised.

the minuses: It is pretty verbose.

Keep in mind that XML languages, in general, are pretty verbose.

Is WDDX alive well ?

2001-04-12 Thread Tracy Bost

Before I jump into Allaire's WDDX SDK, I'm wondering if this is still a platform that
is being progressed.
The web site www.wddx.org doesn't look like its been updated in 2 or 3 years.

Thanks for any feedback and would love to hear from anyone that's using it to
syndicate content to perl asp sites.

Funny you ask...supposedly Macromedia has contracted to have the site
totally updated and redone. Someone mentioned the new site should be up very
soon as work has already begun.

I don't know about how much development is being done with it. However, I recently
completed a project where WDDX was
crucial - both in the web site and in a desktop exe I developed to feed data to the
site.

the minuses: It is pretty verbose.

As I recall, Dave Weiner (Frontier, Userland, Manilla, EditThisPage,
etc.) was put off with allaire for creating/choosing/promoting WDDX
instead od Dave's technology.

I think that Marc Cantor was the original founder of MM and is good
friend of Dave likes his technology.

Just visited the MM site... the investors page uses Java for
animation... curious?

Don't know if any of this means anything, but it may stir the pot a little.

I specifically asked an Allaire consultant if wddx would work with Neo, and
he said yes. So unless they have changed their mind in the last couple of
months, I'd say if anything Macromedia would add another technology and try
to migrate us...
Not to mention they are investing in wddx right now...

I asked precisely the same question to Charles Teague this afternoon at the
macromedia UCON. He said that it's an excellent choice for serializing and
deserializing, as long as you're not really into transformations. When I
asked him why the web site was so out of date, he said the wddx is a mature
(complete) technology.

Mature technology .. Interesting. I guess that answers my question on
whether I should pursue learning or expecting much growth out of WDDX.
