RE: Large Corporations that use ColdFusion
Jim, an interesting point is that IBM are marketing ColdFusion and actually did a series of seminars lately. I worked for Macromedia and recall meeting people from IBM who were very keen on being able to use ColdFusion for Websphere Application development. Here is the link to the IBM web site where they are pushing ColdFusion. http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webservers/coldfusionmx/ We also have a blog http://www.webapper.net with quite a bit of information about setting up ColdFusion on Websphere. Just do a search for Websphere there. Maybe MetLife will think about CF, hth. Kind Regards - Mike Brunt, CTO Webapper Blog http://www.webapper.net Web site http://www.webapper.com Downey CA Office 562.243.6255 AIM - webappermb Web Application Specialists Well, at least for now New England Financial still uses it (www.nef.com). We're about 2500 people and have been happily using it for five years. We were, however bought by MetLife - and they don't use it. Lord knows why since we're done in CF faster and better than any project they've done in JSP (WebSphere) but there you go. I'm pushing for CFMX on WebSphere, but am not encouraged lately. I've also done CF projects personally for John Hancock and Litton-PRC - both very large companies. I've also met people working with CF at Northrop-Grumond [sic?] and Lockheed-Martin, but I'm not sure of what capacity it was used in. What are the corporate issues with CF? Rockwell Software (Rockwell Automation, Allen-Bradley, etc.) started w/CF about 5 years ago -- forums, support, news, etc. Since then the training department has licensed Thinq's Training Server Learning Management System (CF + Oracle). And most recently, I put up an Access-based training e-store thingy (internal-only)... If I keep reading this list, then maybe someday they'll let me punch a hole through their firewall and serve up some macromedia cf/director/flash/authorware e-learning goodies! -mv Winn, Ron wrote: >Philips and Bank of America > >-Original Message- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] >Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 12:51 PM >To: CF-Talk >Subject: RE: Large Corporations that use ColdFusion > >I am currently working a project at a medium sized chemical company who uses >it for their ERP system. Parts of Duke University use it.. I'm not sure how many parts though. I know parts of the University of North Carolina use it too (more heavily, I think, than we do, actually). Progress Energy (which owns Carolina Power & Light, Florida Power, and some other companies) uses it pretty heavily internally, and somewhat on their external site too (they're using TeamSite, and they do some custom stuff too for job postings and things). So long as the developers NDA is honored, of course... Keeping in mind that this information might need to be verifiable, a number of fields would be required, and a client of yours getting a phone call about verifying their intranet might not make you look so good. I currently have a client that has forbidden me from mentioning the url, and it isn't even an intranet project. RE: CF dynamic content server load (was: Large Corporations that use ColdFusion)
You might want to consider writing out the dynamic pages as static HTML files. If the contents of the pages tend not to change on a daily basis than you may want to rethink storing the contents in a database. If the DB storage if for purposes of content management, than instead of generating the pages at each request, or even caching the queries as Dave suggested, you might just want to sump the completed webpages to static HTML files. This saves on network traffic (to/from the DB), load on the DB, load on the application server, and memory. If, however, the contents *DO* change on a regular basis, than caching the queries may not be a valid option either. In that case, you may want to rethink your approach. Out of curiosity, why are the page contents being stored in the database? -- Mosh Teitelbaum evoch, LLC Tel: (301) 625-9191 Fax: (301) 933-3651 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] WWW: http://www.evoch.com/ > -Original Message- > From: Aunger, Mitch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 6:16 PM > To: CF-Talk > Subject: CF dynamic content server load (was: Large Corporations that > use ColdFusion) > > > I've got a similar question (to the original subject) that has reared (no > pun related to Victoria Secret site) its ugly head again here at my office > (question forms slowly and is really at the bottom). > > I've been asked to improve a section of our external website relating to > Press Releases. That isn't even high-traffic, in my opinion. My team is in the process of rewriting macromedia.com as a completely dynamic system - we get about 6m page views per day right now. Also, Matt Liotta will no doubt want to mention the incredibly high speed with which his system delivers (dynamic) pages. The key is that the system wouldn't actually go to the database for every single page view. Caching is king. Cache your queries, cache your pages, cache, cache, cache. RE: CF dynamic content server load (was: Large Corporations that use ColdFusion)
My first inclination is to ask if the content is going to be changing every minute. If not you can cache the queries and set them to expire maybe once a day or twice a day. If you don't want to keep them up in memory, you could write the data to a file(s) once or twice a day and do an include. All of this is just off the top of my head, but that would keep you from having to hit the DB for every single person that hits the Press Releases section. Maybe in the admin you could have a check box that would signal that this page needs to be posted immediately and it would rewrite those pages or clear that cached query. I hope that helps. Those are a couple of solutions that avoid the whole how good is CF argument, maybe.
