I think you can run sshd under Windows, and have been able to for some time.
I think this is described in detail in the O'Reilly book "Securing Windows
NT/2000 Servers for the Internet", which has been out for about two years.
However, last time I checked, you couldn't run it as a service without using
a service wrapper.

Note that I haven't actually done this myself, though, since I'm happy with
other alternatives.

The cygwin tools are great for eveny thing !! You need the knowledge of sed
, grep, find, file etc etc cvs client, ssh client etc..

for example

print all www requests for ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the web log to a file..

grep 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' /c/WEBLOG.log > results.txt

There are loads of other examples...

Have a look at the bash howto for more or

ok, hadn't thought of that one, like it. Is there any way to get the vnc

What I have done is this:

I have one drive with all the development projects.

I map that drive as the default website, that way eveything under it becomes
part of the default website. This is good enough for development!

Okay, so I'm getting that IIS 5.1 on WinXP Pro won't support multiple
websites, which really puts a damper on my plans to use this extra box
for development. What are my options? Can I download a more robust IIS?
Should I go with Apache?

Here I thought I had it all figured out...

Yeap, that was the old way I used to do it with NT. Window 2000 introduced
new features ( look here http://online.securityfocus.com/infocus/1629 )..

Having said that you can run anything over the ssh client / server e.g.
cvs,ftp etc. Very useful if you want to admin linux from windows for
example.

The module provided with CF 5 only supports Apache 1.3.x, so you could just
download the latest version of that.

Or, if you're using it for development, you can go ahead and use this
third-party module with Apache 2:
http://home.nextron.ch/coldfusion/

I've used that on my laptop successfully; I've got Apache 2.0.43 set up to
support multiple virtual servers, some of which use CF 5 and others of which
use CFMX, using host-header names to allow all of this to be bound to the
localhost address.

So you would run Cygwin on the remote server running an ssh server and VNC
for windows

Then run Cygwin on your local machine starting ssh with a command like
ssh -L 5901:localhost:5900 remotecomp

Then connect the windows vnc viewer on your local machine to localhost:1

yes?

Re: IIS on WinXP Pro

2002-12-12 Thread Bruce Sorge
This can all be accomplished dynamically with CF. I run into the same
situation. My laptop, which is my development machine, only has a C drive.
My test web server at home as the sites running on the F drive, and my
production server also uses the F drive. So, I just set everything up in the
application.cfm file to account for the differences, especially when working
with files and such with CFFILE. I know there are other ways to do things, I
am just offering suggestions on what I do.

Actually a great example is using VNC over ssh to admin windows servers
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshvnc.html

Having said that terminal services have got much better...

RE: IIS on WinXP Pro

2002-12-12 Thread Everett, Al
Won't really work for me. I'd have to monkey quite a bit with the way the
code (e.g., subdirectories) is set up so that it works the same on the dev
server as well as the (hosted) production server.

Maybe now, and not always for free.

OpenSSH Server now works under Windows? I knew they were working on it,
but last time I checked only the client worked under Windows.

Re: IIS on WinXP Pro

2002-12-12 Thread Bruce Sorge
XP does not allow hosting of multiple sites. I have several sites on my XP
machine, and all I do is create a virtual directory for each site. So, I
would be able to access the sites like:

http://localhost/sitea
http://localhost/siteb

etc...

All you need to do is make sure each site is set up under the development
machines webroot.

Cygwin (was Re: IIS on WinXP Pro)

2002-12-12 Thread webguy
The cygwin tools are great for eveny thing !! You need the knowledge of sed
, grep, find, file etc etc cvs client, ssh client etc..

for example

print all www requests for ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the web log to a file..

grep 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' /c/WEBLOG.log > results.txt

There are loads of other examples...

Have a look at the bash howto for more or

All of those are available for Win32 anyway though, aren't they? (I know you

OK, this I will concede to, I still have ls.exe in my path just because I
keep typing it by mistake ;)

Any other uses anyone?

I have used it for:
- OpenSSH
- PostgreSQL
- lynx
And various small command line tools like tail, bzip2 etc. Don't know
how up to date this list is, I think currently most of these run native
in one form or another.

I came across the same problem
I just change the directory that IIS points to depending on which site I am
working on. I don't have much need to work on more than one site at a time
so this works for me.

I don't know about the new release (RC2) but there was a lot of talk
about when RC1 was out. CFMX didn't initially work on it--installation
problems. Someone posted a work-around on MM's web forums (you can find
it in google).

I must be having a "senior moment" then. I thought it did, but that was a

Actually Windows .NET Enterprise server (currently out in release candidate 2)
is an extension of Win XP The interface is just about the same as XP Pro.

Having tested the release candidate, I am not ready to migrate from Win 2K Adv
Server as yet. I will be receiving the final version when it is released as
part of my subscription, and I will take another look at it then.

RE: IIS on WinXP Pro

2002-12-11 Thread Lee Fuller
Al,

WinXP is a consumer level operating system, not a server level OS.
There are no plans to support IIS in any other format than single site
for the XP OS.

However, Apache may run on XP, especially if you use Cygwin
(www.cygwin.com). I have not tried it.. But it may work.

Okay, so I'm getting that IIS 5.1 on WinXP Pro won't support multiple
websites, which really puts a damper on my plans to use this extra box
for development. What are my options? Can I download a more robust IIS?
Should I go with Apache?

Here I thought I had it all figured out...
