Thank you to everyone for your feedback. I have just ordered both Mastering
Cold Fusion and Forta's Web Application Kit. I will then hopefully be
moving on to his advanced CF book. Thanks Again

IDG has the cold fusion for dummies book out as well. It is good, has some
cute tips and has ten custom tags in it that are fun to do.

Ditto!

Get them regardless of the version you are working on. They are a great
resourse to fall back on. I am using version 4.5.1 but the books are
excellent resourses.

I'm just getting started with CF. I have built simple queries in CF, but
basically have just touched the surface of it's capabilities. I am
wondering if I should go ahead and purchase Forta's 4.0 Web Application
Construction Kit, or if anyone has heard of a newer version for 4.5. I have
worked in 4.0 and 4.5 and haven't noticed any extreme differences so I just
wanted some advice regarding my purchase. I would love any insight!
Thanks,
Bridget

Ben is not releasing a book for 4.5 since it is not a complete upgrade, his

RE: Newbie Forta Question

2000-05-18 Thread Jennifer

I agree. I have Mastering CF and the two Forta books. I had the Forta books
first and I was confused about some things. When I got the Mastering book,
my questions were answered. If you have to learn ColdFusion as quickly as
possible but not as thoroughly as possible, Mastering is perfect. But you
won't get the details or the techniques that you will get from the Forta
books. The best bet is to get both and read the equivalent sections in
both. That will give you the greatest benefits.

RE: Newbie Forta Question

2000-05-18 Thread Levi Wallach

Some of us had the pleasure of hearing Ben talk about CF last night at the
CFUGorama here in DC. He actually fielded a question from someone about
coming out with a 4.5 book and said that he was not planning to because of
all the other books he was working on and the fact that the changes between
4 and 4.5 are not huge - at least for the basics of CF. He also mentioned
something about how the next version of CF would require rewriting the book
from scratch, so it sounds like there are some big changes afoot for CF 5?

RE: Newbie Forta Question

2000-05-18 Thread Reynolds, Adam

I would actually suggest that the Mastering ColdFusion Book by Danesh is
also worth reading. They have very different approaches to writing about CF.
I've got friends who I've lent both books to who have stated that the Danesh
book is easier going if you are starting out.

The Forta books approach subjects in a much more thorough sectioned way
though and I use them as a reference when I need to examine an aspect of CF.
I do not look at the Danesh book anymore.

I would suggest though that any book on CF is worthwhile purchasing. The
Danesh book is good 'course' book, whereas I feel the Forta books are
essential reference books.

Bridget,

Go get the ColdFusion 4.0 Web Application Construction Kit and the Advanced
Book from Ben Forta. Both are top notch quality books. Use those with your
documentation and the sky is the limit.

Ditto!

Get them regardless of the version you are working on. They are a great
resourse to fall back on. I am using version 4.5.1 but the books are
excellent resourses.

Yes! I'm new to CF, too, and I can't tell you how many times the CFWACK
has helped me out. The book is filled with good examples, but more
importantly, I've found the writing to be very "user-friendly", which is
something often lacking in programming books...

So by all means, pick up a copy of the CFWACK, it's a great investment.

Cheers,

RE: Newbie Forta Question

2000-05-18 Thread Michael Doyle

Yes yes yes! Get BF's CF4.0 Book. It is THE standard reference -
particularly for learning CF. By the by, he is not planning to write a new
book for 4.5 [Or so I read here on CF-Talk from a poster who called himself
"Ben Forta" :-)]

While you are at it you might want to get his Advanced CF4.0 book as well -
so you can really tear it up!
