RE: cfeclipse and ftp

2008-08-02 Thread Rick Faircloth
Sorry, I don't have any advice...I tried to get ftp working
consistently in Eclipse/CFEclipse and I gave up.

Got the same advice you did, but couldn't figure out how to
get it to work consistently.

I'm coming back to CFE after looking at other IDE's, but at the
start, I'm just going to simplify my expectations and use
FileZilla to upload changes. It's an extra step and definitely
not as convenient as easily clicking a button to upload changes
that are automatically designated in CFE as needed uploading, but
at least I know how to get FileZilla to perform consistently.

I had implemented WST or Web Site Tools, I think it was, to get
FTP functionality.

I thought implementing Aptana seemed like overkill too, just to use
it for FTP.

Just my .02...

 Hi

we are just making the move from dreamweaver to cfeclipse and think its
 great!!!

except the ftp doesnt seem to be as straight forward as it is in dreamweaver!

we have seen that there are various ways of uploading files to our site but
 none of them seem to
work
through our cfeclipse and wonder what we are missing?

first we tried to connect to our server using the file explorer... we clicked
 on locations --
entered
the details of our server (all is definitely correct) and then save and
 closed the dialog box. we
then
select the site from the drop down box but it contains no files and doesnt
provide a way for us to
 connect to it.

we also found another tutorial on how to synchronize our files with our
 server by right clicking
on the
project node on the navigation tab and selecting 'import'. it then says to
 open the folder called
'other' and select the FTP option, but we don't have this option in the
 'other' folder. the only
option
we have is 'remote file system'

the third option we have read about is to use aptana. but this seems like
 overkill. why would we
need
such a large program just to upload files to our server.

we would appreciate any advice on best option and what we are doing wrong, or
 what we are not
doing but
 should be doing?

 thanks

way it is easier to drag and drop images and junk over in regular windows

I dunno-- I've never used FileZilla and my last job had purchased WebDrive
for us.

I'm not sure what you mean by separate interface. Once I map the drive, I
just open the files in my IDE directly from that drive.
Since it maps it as a regular drive, I also have the option of easily
dragging stuff to and from the drive in windows and using Araxis Merge to
compare code.

You could probably get similar mileage out of a freeware version of the same
thing.

Not a good choice for me, I'm not *that* good of a coder! :o)

Is drag-n-drop from within the IDE between local files and the

I think the DW type solution is what some folks are looking for.

It never occurred to me to check out from SC direct to prod.

In our current operation we check out from sc to local, change files and
deploy to dev for initial teating, then migrate up to test (for QA/UAT) and
then to prod environments.

I didn't think that was atypical...

I just installed a product called WebDrive that lets you map an FTP folder
as a virtual drive in Windoze.. I have read that there's a similar product
for NetWare users called netdrive.exe (which has to come off the Novell
resource disk), so that might be an option for NetWare users that have
access to said disk.

So I've been using WebDrive for a couple of days, and it seems to play
nicely with Eclipse, and I can now edit and save my files directly on the
development server via FTP, just like I had dreamweaver set up. It even
saves a copy locally in a synch folder, so I have a local backup (works
just like DW's upload on save feature, same shortcut, CTRL-S).

I'm just now getting a chance to explore CF-Eclipse, since the only
practical I have had to my development environment is through ftp, and so
far I'm digging it. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be an
easy way to switch between projects, which was trivial in DW, using the
dropdown above the resource tree in the Files tab.

That is all for now. :)

You should be able to just Switch Workspace to get to different projects (if
you want that setup) otherwise all projects are listed in the Same window so
just need to expand that node - easier than DW.

Also, note that Eclipse is the IDE and CFE is the plugin- it should be clear
on what features and quirks belong to which before flagging.

Why not use source control with eclipse, as it normally integrates (with
p4, cvs, and others), and then when ready to deploy, do a sync of your
repository on the server?

I've been doing this for a while (using Perforce as my SCM) and not
only does it guarantee only sending checked-in code to your servers, but
it also allows you to shut off your ftp server.

I actually have a CF site which is set up to do a Sync/Update from my

Re: CFEclipse and FTP (was: MM and CFEclipse)

2005-08-02 Thread Barney Boisvert
If you pull right from your source control system to your production
webroot, make sure you're either doing an export (not a checkout), or
you're masking your metadata directories in some fashion (i.e. with
the web server). There's data in there that you don't want to be
public. If you have to do it that way, I'd recommend the latter, as
doing repeated exports just chews up bandwidth unnecessarily (since
without the metadata, you can't do deltas).

Much better (at least in my opinion) is to have your production
systems directly mirror you staging system. That staging system keeps
an up-to-date copy of the codebase from version control, and then uses
some delta-aware transmission method (I like rsync) to keep all the
production servers in sync with it, except for the metadata
directories. It also absolves you of having to log into each
production server to pull code updates, which is a huge pain if you've
got more than a couple machines. Having a central point that you can
push from is a lot easier.

Barneyb, sorry, I wasn't too clear.

I have a home-based Source Control Server.

When developing , I check in and out of it. I cut and branch releases,
etc.

My structure looks like this /websites/domain/(www, database,
private,etc)/files

On my web server, I have sites which map their roots to an export of
/websites/domain/

Then I can sync them on staging. And once I'm ready, sync them on
production.

The syncing mechanism is all command-line based, so I wrapped that up in
a CF app so I can deploy it via hitting some URLs' ... Only changed
and new files are moved (and deleted ones are removed).

In CVS parlance, I do a cvs update, etc... In perforce, it's a p4 sync
on a given clientspec.

Since I only have 2 prod servers, its not a big deal, but you're right
that its not scalable should my server farm grow.

This is for a personal/private website project, not work-related, and
I'm the only developer, so I'm not too concerned at the moment about
making it too much more complicated...

RE: CFEclipse and FTP (was: MM and CFEclipse)

2005-08-02 Thread Russ
We use ftp for developing on the dev server, which is a checked out copy of
the production code (which is checked out both on the production server and
the dev server). When I'm ready to deploy, I check in the files I want to
deploy, and do an update on the production server. We use Subversion and
TortoiseSVN.

It's probably not a perfect solution, but it sure beats ftping files over.
It's still a work in progress, and we're constantly looking for ways to
improve it. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

2005-08-02 Thread Barney Boisvert
You don't want to be checking out files to your live system, in
general, because that exposes the VC metadata to the public. Really.

However, synthesizing such an app would be pretty trivial, and you can
plug it into the CF admin using the extension point (assuming CF7
still has it). Use Ant, since it's got a lot of systems supported
already, and just build a simple web interface that calls the build
file with the right params to do your redeploy.
