Given that we are a bioresources repository, (we store biological samples of
all sorts) we've named our servers appropriately, virus, phage, bacillus,
culture etc.

RE: Server names

2005-07-01 Thread Emmet McGovern
We used to have Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Gamera, Gidan, Gidrah and so on.
We now have a rather mundane naming convention. Ironically the row across
from us in the data center was all kids cereal names. I never did find out
what company they belonged too. 2 rows back were all the characters from
south park which belonged to an adult entertainment company.

RE: Server names

2005-06-30 Thread Hugo Ahlenius
My machines at home are named after cheeses, I am typing this on Stilton
(my laptop), then there is Parmesan, Portsalut, Ricotta and Gorgonzola.
The office machines are named after Moomin characters (finnish
childrens/adult book) -- Hattifnatt, Hemul, Mumin, Filifjonkan, Sniff,
Pappan.

I think it is a fun thing to get people to suggest a name of their on
machine on the network at the office -- at home it is my wife that gets
involved in it (she is a big cheese-lover).

I used to use cartoon characters from Dexter's Lab (Dexter, Deedee, Mandark,
etc) but when I moved to virtual servers they multiplied faster than the
show's cast.

Now it's all comedians: Chaplin, Stewart, Williams, Kinison, Cross, Gould,

I might've, but I'd have used more obscure names (with the exception
of Megatron)... and/or from the movie... Galvatron, Unicron, Cup,
Springer, Rumble, Frenzy ... I would definately have named one
Devastator! :P Granted, if I had a server named Starscream I'd have to
try and get any system alerts about failures on that server to play
the sound clip of "Oh my foot!"

Oh, you didn't think I meant that, did you? Errr... we umm...
actually name ours after well-known figures in the ColdFusion
community. I'm off to reboot Dave :)

Oh, man, what a wet blanket. :)

Guess it's a bad time to talk about how I name my servers from the cast
of Scooby Doo?

Actually, I don't. I would if I had more than one computer at home,
though. The hottest one would be Velma.

It's worth pointing out that listing your internal server names - or, better
yet, describing how you name them - is a minor form of information leakage.
This mailing list, like everything else, will be searchable for the
foreseeable future.

Yeah, I know, I'm a killjoy.

I thought we were being original! Starscream is our test server, and
Rampage is a firewall box. We've also got a Galvatron and Swerve :)
The new virtual server box is going to be named after an Omnibot, and
each of the virtual servers within it will named after the different
characters that made them up... So nerdy!
