They're a young company with relatively young products. Improvements
between versions are pretty significant as a result. The difference
between their v2.x and 3.x stats product was big. I can only imagine
what a 1.x mail server would look like.

A lot of IMail users migrated to SM 2.x back when Ipswitch shot itself
in the foot with their ICS debacle. I was one. There are plusses and
minuses to SM 2.x. If you need users stored in a db, for instance; SM
can't do it. Antispam is primitive, but I don't care because I rely
on a gateway and don't want the mail server in the mix. Webmail (what
the clients actually use) is wonderful. Administration is much
simpler in many ways and more complex in others. Resource usage is a
fraction of what IMail was eating. V3.x is to be released any day now
and should be interesting.

I've had so much trouble with LiveStats 5 & 6 that I'd never again
consider another DeepMetrix product or service. With LiveStats 5 it was
constant database (proprietary) corruption, forcing me to reinstall and
reimport, ad nauseam. With LiveStats 6 it just decides not to import logs
for several days at a time. Whether it's unable to read the logs, or it
can't communicate with the MySQL database where it keeps data, I can never
tell. Once again, I end up wiping the database and reimporting logs about
every two months or so.

I'm going to take a look at SmarterStats. However, this little tidbit in
their knowledge base has me thinking twice about how bright the developers
might be. It involves running the service under a user account so that
logs on network shares can be read:

RE: Stats Program

2005-12-12 Thread Jeff Garza
We use Urchin (the predecessor to GoogleStats) which is still sold as a
standalone product. It's one of the better packages out there and is highly
configurable. We even added in a ton of custom lookups to match dynamic
pages with the actual product data to give meaningful reports out to our
users. You can install it on your own servers as well and the cost isn't
too bad (around $900 last time I checked for a 100 site license, which is
still considerably cheaper than WebTrends).

Cheers,

Jeff

Well, that's sort of the problem. Google is claiming that their
servers were crushed by the onslaught of interest, so they've actually
completely closed the ability to register a new site for now. Even the
almighty Google is struggling to figure out the best solution at the
moment.

I would not yet trust Google Stats. Not only are they having trouble
with capacity, but the usefulness of the charts they give for free is
pretty low. Sure, there's a page hit/page count chart, but the
"useful" charts are really those that track conversions and things
related to their AdWord and AdSense services. Perhaps they'll expand
their offering over time, and I'm happy as far as tracking my blog
stats go, but I wouldn't put my company's sole tracking capability in
the service's hands yet either. (And this doesn't even take in to
account the privacy aspects of Google "owning" your data.)

You don't get log analysis with google. You only get to put in some
javascript into your pages and see stats from only certain visitors
(basically you lose anyone how doesn't use javascript, including search

What's a good stats program (with the least performance overhead) to

Smarter Stats is decent and free for single sites. It's pretty fast if you
import the logs regularly (it can be slow to import lots of old logs tho'
but that only happens once).

I use weblog expert. It's pretty simple but does what I need. It was also
pretty cheap.
