IIS is only supported on business and higher... Eric -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 10:19 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Vista versions - what's really needed for CF development? I'm looking to get a new laptop and I'm just wondering - what version of Vista does a Coldfusion developer really want/need? For example I remember from the XP days that the folks who picked up Windows XP Home Edition didn't have IIS, which really can be a pain to workaround. There were also some nice to have's that really made XP Professional a winner for the CF developer. Now I got this little pamphlet from Target about the different editions and it looks like Vista Business ed. (when compared to Ultimate) pretty much has the works minus Windows Media Center and some drive encryption tool which I could care less about. Is media center worth having (in which case, is Home Premium a better option)? It seems like the Business ed. has some networking tools that might come in handy - are they? What aren't they telling me? :) If you want to watch movies, etc, on your laptop, Media Center functionality might be something you want. There's nothing that will help you with regard to CF programming in Media Center. Business or Ultimate are required if you want to join your machine to a Windows domain. That's the networking tools they're referring to. You can run CF on any version of Vista, although I suspect that IIS 7 isn't officially supported by Adobe yet. Ok, sounds like I want Business edition if i want a full version of IIS. Now is the Windows Media Center piece worth upgrading from business to ultimate for? You only need the Business edition, only if you want to be able to use more than one website in IIS, as this is a full blown version of IIS. Otherwise premium edition will surfice. RE: Vista versions - what's really needed for CF development?
Well, I can tell you for a fact. Vista Premium comes with a cut down version of IIS, authentication and multiple websites are not supported, and if you need to or want these you will need Vista Business/Enterprise/Ultimate for the full blown inclusion of IIS 7.0 There are a lot more that is not included in the premium version of IIS7.0, but if you think PWS on previous versions then you have a fair idea.
