To add some fule to this fire, it looks like Spectra will be open source here in the near future. What does everyone have to say to that.

Neil what do you think in your opinion. Farcry or Spectra?

I have used farcry, but I need the documentation now to really mess with it. I can't get to the website either. It is on again off again for me.

Neil what do you think of Farcry I know you are really big into content management and I am finally in a position where I need content management, but it must have a lot of features. You can write me off list.

Re:What CMS do you use?

2003-10-21 Thread Jeremy Brodie
Bob,

Depends on your price range and your requirements. All CMSs from the least expensive to the priciest are just frameworks requireing additional development. Additional development includes the workflow and security requirements needed (and in my experiance nailing these items down is just as expensive as buying the CMS, since organizations need to think through who and how content is approved)

Some of the items on my checklist for thinking through a CMS would be the following:

1) What types of content will be posted on the site? (PDF documents, ppts videos)
2)Who is the audiance for the content? (is the content manuals, press releases, e-zines...)
3)What is the technical ability of the staff? How confortable are approvers with using web technologies?
4) How much approval authority does an organization need? How many layers should the workflow encomopass?
5) What type of security is needed for the authoring area?
6) What type of version control is needed for authors to roll back content?
7) What type of integration is needed with existing systems?
8) How will people log in to the authoring area? Do you have a members or authenitcated user area? What about technical authors who can write code to enhance the framwork?

All in all, quite a few questions to answer By answering these questions and figuring out how many people will need to use the CMS (authors + Users + admins) will help in the product selction phase.

I realize that the paragraphs aren't what you're looking for. However, before stearing you to a product like CommonSpot or Elkton (sp), its important to flesh out some of the requirements first.

There are a number of really good CF CMSs out on the market.

Not really looking for products you have seen but for a CMS you use or
your company uses and what you think of it. I know some are very
pricey, some don't run CF. Just looking for some ideas to be used
where I at now. Thanks.
