I think you could use whatever server technology that you want, since
server communication is via Web services, although it would be easier
to use .NET than ColdFusion. If all you want are some fancy buttons,
then I don't think you would need any direct interaction with the
server.
Flash is programmed using ActionScript. Silverlight uses .NET (C# and
VB.NET), and also supports JavaScript. So that line you are
referencing is referring to how you actually create a Silverlight
application, not server-side technology. The advantage of Silverlight
over Flash is that the same programming language that is used to
create Silverlight applications can also be used to create desktop
applications and Web applications. In contrast, ActionScript is really
only used for Flash and Flex, and you need to use an entirely
different programming language on the server.

mentioned that it is possible to use CF as a server side language for
silverlight.
