RE: ZIPPING with coldfusion = ARJ!

Umm..hello..

ACE was not, and is not shortlived.

It is a very good compression standard that is still widely used in
various...
umm..circles on the internet.

THey are up to WinACE 2.0 now which provides even better protection, and the
client is quite pretty too!
^_^
It handles ZIP,RAR,And a host of others..integrates very well with Explorer.
You can even select several .zip files and extract them all at once to a
directory if you so desire.

There is also a command line utility that can be used like PKZIP.exe

ARJ/JAR fell into disuse years ago (as LHARC did before it), RAR superseded
it in that vein of compression utils.

Either way though, handing a LHZ, ARJ, RAR, etc. (or the shortlived ACE) to
your average windows user is like handing a gzipped tarball to a Mac user..
if they even did know how to use it they probably wouldn't bother to install
the utility to decompress it.
The problem here is that most consumers will not know what to with an ARJ
file.

RE: ZIPPING with coldfusion = ARJ!

2001-04-19 Thread C. Hatton Humphrey

(*scritches head*)

Isn't that something like saying, "We're just going to use this time capsule
embedded in the left rear quarterpannel of a tank, then we just drive the
tank to mars." (Okay, it's early, forgive the bad analogy).

The beautiful thing about compression is the concept behind it. I just
recently ran into a situation where a client wanted a site, and for some
reason our sales guy decided that we needed to burn the code and a backup of
a SQL Server database to CD. He wanted something "pretty" to put in their
hands. Never mind that the whole thing took a touch over 2 mb! I
personally wanted to put the thing in a self-extracting archive of some kind
and get it out the door!

The important thing is that both yourself and the intended recipient know
what to do with the archive. If it's going from you to another tech that
you know already has some form of ARJ archiving utility then you've already
found your answer and we're rehashing a *very* old discussion thread.

Enjoy!
Hatton Humphrey

PS: For nostalgia's sake, anyone remember ICE? It was a 'modified' LHA
wrapper. Also, why hasn't anyone brought up ARC's?

Forget about ZIP.
ARJ IS MUCH BETTER!
I just did some testing, arj32 (www.arjsoftware.com)
is the best solution (using CFEXCUTE)

you can arj unlimited number of files (compare with
WINZIP's limit of 65535) + more intresting switches
and options.

Thank you all for answering.
pkzip w/ cfexcute seemed to be the BEST solution.

There's CFX_Zip, if you want "native" tool. Otherwise, most of the popular
ZIP compression tools support command-line execution. WinZip, for example,
has a CLI add-on at their download site.

RE: ZIPPING with coldfusion

2001-04-17 Thread Caulfield, Michael

This may not be what your looking for, but there is actually a ZIP object
exposed by CFStudio, easily scriptable with js or vbs. You can find docs on
it in the "scripting the visual tools object model" help file.

If you're just looking to do some admin tasks, it might be a good choice.
License doesn't cover use outside of studio though.

PKZip command line would work well with CFExecute

www.pkware.com

I have done it before in perl so I am sure it can be done with CFExecute.
