Does anyone subscribe to the lists like cf-talk and the Adobe cf

same issue.

[cfaussie] Re: Bluedragon woes

2006-08-24 Thread AJ Dyka

Thanks Guys,

See, I thought yo'd be able to help me! :)

I have since subscribed to the BD lists and will hammer them directly
with any quirks I find.

Ultimatly I ended up building a workaround which looks the same to the
end user but has made the code more complex that I had wanted, either
way it's working as it should in all environments.

I'll see if I can add it to a feature request list for v7!

Thanks.

[cfaussie] Re: Cold Fusion Tutor - hourly rate

2006-08-24 Thread Barry Beattie

Hi Pete

". we were all cf noobs at one point. "

and boy! doesn't it bring back memories when you're moving into a new
area (like Flex).

some obserrvations:

I reckon CFAussie is actually a bit quieter than when I first joined
up (around RedSky - CF6.1 Beta) so in theory there's room for more
questions...

asking questions publicly can lead to different solutions, some of
which are so left-field or brilliantly simple that others learn from
them too. Programmers (eg: me) have a disposition of over complicating
stuff...

I suspect that one of the reasons CFAussie is a bit quiet now is that
the big ticket items have already been covered and are now considered
as FAQ's - the platform is that good, stable and straight-forward.
That's where searching the archives is such a gem. Suggestion: search
first, then ask (and don't be afraid to ask for clarification if
you're not sure about something found in the archives).

my 2c nothing more

cheers
barry.b

PS: yeah and CFUG's are good value. worth the effort, methinks...

[cfaussie] Re: anyone else with grief: MS06-040 patch and CF (JRun)?

2006-08-24 Thread Barry Beattie

from what I can work out (and I'm not the sysadmin, just a concerned
coder working with those servers), the patch has problems when JRUN
requests large chunks of contiguous memory

here's some info from our sysadmins

I'm surprised this hasn't had a big red flag waiving in the CF world

This is a followup to my earlier episode of issues with restarting
Java services after patching server with the mandatory MS06-040 patch.
 The saga continues...

Anyway, there are a number of people running JVM with the same awful
experience (see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=759413)

MS realised this but made no mention in the MS06-040 patch page that
there is a hotfix available, which is this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924054

In summary, what it says is:

Programs that request lots of contiguous memory, such as one gigabyte
or more, may fail with an unexpected error after you install security
update 921883 on a 32-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
(SP1)-based computer. For example, programs such as Microsoft Business
Solutions - Navision 3.7 may fail.

So, it depends on how much memory requested by the program, the larger
the amount, the more likely it will die. In our case, all production
CF servers have massive memory (2GB & more) and JVM is given a large
chunk of it. Hence, the MS06-040 caused them to crash. Not so with
the staging/development servers with much less memory and hence less
allocation for their JVM. That explains why on some servers this
patch cause problems & others it does not.

I've NOT applied them to the staging/development servers because they
are not causing problem there & MS said:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only
intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the
next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

I've verified that after applying this & restarting, the previous
service that crashes is no longer crashing (good news). I've also
re-enabled all the self-test IISTEST script which were disabled
earlier.

This is the intro course, so most of them haven't been in a straight
programming role before, although they are in IT - some DBAs, testers,
technical support people for example.  Some do have programming experience
in other languages. Most of them work for companies that already have CF

So if you wanted to hear about people running in off the

then no, it's not happening... yet :-)  But more CFers are good however
you look at it.

[cfaussie] myspace and .net (was RE: [cfaussie] Re: Bluedragon woes)

2006-08-24 Thread Charlie Arehart

Ah, I see. Thanks, and sorry Mark. While Myspace has indeed
moved to the .NET framework (using BlueDragon to run their CFML, natively on
.NET), they are also at the time time looking at converting some aspects of the
site to pure ASP.NET. It's a very large CFML site, though, so it's not going to
happen soon (I would think). Again, the whole reason they bought BD was so that
they could keep the CFML alive (and even continue modifying it, because it's so
easy to do so), while also exploring possibilities of integration with .NET and
even migration of some apps to ASP.NET. It need not be an either/or thing, now
that they're running on BD.NET.

Our next scheduled meeting for the
Victorian ColdFusion Design and Development User Group will be Thursday, the
31st of August, at 150 / 183 City Road Southbank starting at 7:00pm.

Our previous venue is no longer available so meetings will
be at my place until a suitable venue is found.

This week we will have Bjorn Schultheiss guest presenting.

Bjorn Schultheiss shares his experience in developing rich internet
applications using FLEX 2, the second release of the FLEX product from Adobe,
formerly Macromedia.

Bjorn will be taking us through the features of FLEX, how these features can be
used in real life applications and the advantages of developing with
FLEX.  Because of the many possibilities of FLEX, this will be PART 1 in a
series of presentations by Bjorn.  In this presentation Bjorn will be
covering the following topics:-

 Intro to FLEX
 Basic FLEX Principles
 Data Binding
 Flex and Coldfusion integration
 Using the Cairngorm Framework
 Flex Data Services

Just a
reminder about the CFAUSSIE lists, anyone who isn't registered should be. It's
the best place to get help or even just have a rant:P

Go to the cfaussie

Hope to see you there.

We will
be providing refreshments and finger food so if you are looking at coming along
please send an RSVP email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]u so we can get some indication of

[cfaussie] Cold Fusion Tutor - hourly rate

2006-08-24 Thread pmayadun

Hi all,
I am trying to (self) learn CF. Primerily via books, the web etc etc. I
get stuck sometimes and spend too much time trouble shooting. I have
tried via various forums on the web, but it simply doesnt seem to help.

Would someone be able to help with explanations as to what i am doing
wrong, on an hourely rate?
I live in the Gold Coast, so if it is someone in the Gold Coast that
would be super. But not all that imp as I can always call and chat...

OR if someone can just write some sample code to explain what I have
done wrong would be Ok too.

many thanks...

Pete

[cfaussie] Re: Session variable strangeness

2006-08-24 Thread darryl lyons

Well, it will still depend upon the type of variable. In some cases
you'd still be referencing the session variable anyway (e.g.
request.oUser = session.oUser vs. request.oUser =
duplicate(session.oUser))
