So... 15 years at $15 per hour base rate (8 hours per day)? $120 ish per day
seems reasonable even to me! But I'm sold!

If you couldn’t find a person for 3 or 4 years you weren't asking in the

It's not that hard, if you're really looking.

Brian,

The way I would calculate a given rate is based off the number of years of
experience...

I usually work it using the following rule:

* If they are completely new to the role, about $20 an hour...

* Every 4 years of experience nets them an extra $15 an hour on top of that.

* And every year above 10 years gets them an extra $5/hr on top of that...

so 12 years of experience nets 20 + 3*15 + 2*5 = 75/hr => ~ 600 a day...
minimum. The over 10 years add on, could be as high as $10 more per hour for
every year of experience above 10 years... so this rate can vary as much as
an extra 10/hr... which only works out to about 680/day... (85/hr)

A "desirable" salary on the other hand, generally is about the hourly rate
expressed in thousands plus about 20%... So a $75/hr position works roughly
well as 75K x 1.2 => 90K salary position... base salary for the sake of
example... Rule of thumb is that as a contractor you're earning roughly
double your rate in thousands in salary per annum... so earning 75/hr is
almost equivalent to earning 150K/year.
Switching to a perm role, and therefore a lower salary equivalent is usually
a big deterrent for most contractors considering a perm role... especially
if it means dropping about 40% of your income...
But as Mark Picker said... the salary packages also include a substantial
amount of annual leave, sick leave, flex time, superannuation, and so on to
make up for a number of these cutbacks.

I'm a contractor myself, and have been for some time, I know that there are
risks to dropping to a perm role, but I personally can't wait to get into a
stable CF Dev role myself once this contract finishes up...

@Mark P,

DET have been trying to fill a CF role over the last few years but have been
unsuccessful? Just out of curiosity, what channels did you go through re
advertising the role? There's a number of us developers out there, I'm
surprised you had difficulties??

[cfaussie] Re: Daily Rate

2011-03-14 Thread Mark Picker
As Brian said short term I took it as meaning contractor rate, not
salary.

If it helps, we pay full time staff a salary that works out at around
$330 gross per day. Then add 5 weeks annual leave, 14 sick days, flex
time, super etc.

CF skills aren't a must (but we would rate skilled CF developers
higher than non skilled) but staff would need to have some type of
development background.

Good luck finding someone Brian. We tried filling a CF position for
over 3 years (or maybe 4??) and recently had to remove the position as
we couldn't fill it.

Cheers
Mark
