Re: [cfaussie] Re: Daily Rate

2011-03-16 Thread Mike Kear
I would say definitely that the location is the problem. There's
nothing wrong with Dubbo - I like the place - but to up-stakes and
move there would require quite a commitment on my part, and I'd need
to see a similar committment on the other side.

I originally came to Australia from New Zealand. The company that
transferred me, failed to honour the commitment to allow me home leave
back in New Zealand on a regular basis, even though it was in writing
("Oh that shouldnt have been in there! No, you arent entitled to home
leave - we dont have budget for it!" ) . So I had uprooted my
family, sold my house, brought all my belongings, said goodbye to
all my roots and connections in NZ, and found myself on my own in
Australia. Now it's true that Aust and NZ arent that different
and there wasn't all THAT much trouble settling in here, but it was
not factored into our decision whether to accept the transfer or not.
My wife had a terrible time with homesickness, and took a long time
to adjust.

I'm pretty sure that anyone coming to DET in Dubbo would want to be
certain that they're not going to uproot and move to Dubbo and have a
reasonable security of employment for a decent period. Not be left
without a job, and even fewer prospects of ColdFusion employment.

I think i remember seeing that job being advertised, and skipping
straight over it because of the location.

Or maybe you could consider some kind of remote or telecommuting.
Lots of people do it that way nowdays. I dont know anything about
how you guys work, but I would imagine from the perspective of the
employee, it would probably work if you had them drive to Dubbo for 3
days a month or something.

[cfaussie] Re: Daily Rate

2011-03-16 Thread Mark Picker
Sorry to Brian that my comment appears to be getting his question a
bit OT :)

The first and I think maybe also the second attempt at recruiting was
done solely through our normal channels. Advertising on our own
websites, jobsnsw website, advertising in the local and capital city
papers plus one or two of the larger jobs sites (seek, careerone etc).

At the time the job was also restricted to being located in Dubbo
(NSW). Further attempts expanded the location to anywhere in our area
of responsibility (roughly 51% of NSW). I also posted the job on
cfjobs, whirlpool and a couple of other recruitment sites.

It was very disappointing as we had to go to a LOT of trouble to get
this position as the NSW Govt were (and still are) in a staff freeze.
We had to justify why this position should be excluded from the
freeze, which isn't easy. We also looked at dropping the position
back to a cadetship and other similar options but unfortunately those
were knocked on the head (I'm guessing related to the freeze).

While CF experience was desirable we weren't going to knock someone
back because they lacked that skill. One of our previous developers
came to us with .NET experience but no CF experience and was up and
running with CF in weeks (some on here would know him, Justin Carter:
www.madfellas.com).

I have no idea if we will ever advertise this position again as the
funding has now been allocated elsewhere for this financial year.
Anyone that has worked for the government would know once funding is
moved or removed you have a snowflakes chance in hell of getting it
back.

I do suspect the main problem we had was the location. Almost without
fail whenever we advertise a job we get a lot of applicants who think
Dubbo/Orange etc. is just slightly further west of Penrith but not as
far as the Blue Mountains. I guess 400 -500km is only a couple of
centimetres on a map. :)

Cheers

Just as a data point (since I'm sure US rates are different to AU
rates), I know plenty of US CFers who are getting $700-$1,000 USD /
day and I know a few who are getting north of that. Of course, there
are also plenty getting south of that range but I'm not sure how
"experienced" those folks are. I also know there are some folks out
there desperate to get even $400 / day and they have quite a bit of
experience, on paper at least.

[cfaussie] Re: Windows 7 CFEclipse / CFBuilder maxed out TCP connections

2011-03-16 Thread BarryC
It would appear this issue is due to Symantec Endpoint Protection's
firewall, which is blocking some outgoing TCP traffic.

[cfaussie] Melbourne Cold Fusion User Group and Melbourne Flex User Group are merging. No meeting this month. New group = MAD, Melbourne Adobe Developers.

2011-03-16 Thread Peter Robertson
Hi to all Melbourne Adobe Developers!

Sorry for the late advice, but I'm afraid we won't be having a meeting
this month.

Subsequent to the last CFUG, we've been busy re-shaping the usergroups
for Melbourne developers who use Adobe tooling and technologies.
Given attendances for both CFUG and MFUG meetings, we've decided to
amalgamate the two groups.
The new group will be called MAD, Melbourne Adobe Developers.

The primary focus will be, of course, ColdFusion and Flex, but we're
open to any topic of concern to web developers using the Adobe stack,
including pure ActionScript, Javascript, CSS, etc, as well as more
general topics like OOP, testing, version control and so on. We'll
also be changing the format, with meetings having two presentations of
between 20 and 30 minutes each.

The format will be:
- 6:30 - 7:00 PM General chat while people arrive.
- 7:00 - 7:30 PM First presentation
- 7:30 - 8:00 PM Pizza & discussion
- 8:30 - 9:00 PM Second presentation
- 9:00 - 9:10 PM Closing comments, general announcements, etc.
- 9:10 - ?? Informal chat for those wishing to stay on.

We'll be encouraging presenters to focus on demonstrations of what can
be done with, and how to approach, the various tools and technologies
available, rather than deep-diving into the detail. This is of
course a general guideline and there will no doubt be cases where the
detailed drill on a specific topic will be warranted.

The Manager of the new group will be Steve Onnis. The Co-manager will
be Peter Robertson. Dale Fraser has generously offered to continue to
make CogState's boardroom available and to help out generally.

We will be announcing events and general business on CFAussie and
http://mad.groups.adobe.com.
Please let us know your thoughts on what is proposed here and let us
have any questions.
We'll be running the new group in the CFUG slot of third Thursday of
each month, so our next meeting will be Thursday 21 April.
